Craig, and others,
I don't think so but I've put in a call to make sure - you might want to
contact Mike McCann 321 751 4494 for more info. In the past, the airshow
was free to members - others had to pay and it ended up being about the same
as the cost of membership. I'm sure formation prctice would be like other
airshows - birds of a feather...

Based on my experience, if you are not a member they treat you as a second
class citizen (at best)... They apparently do not value your willingness to
support their Airshow by taking the time and money for their cause, instead,
they feel that flying in their airshow is a great privilege and they are
doing you a favor letting you fly in it. Granted, this was a sorry
experience I encountered a couple of years ago - I hope they have
improved... reading Bill Walker's post on this, I see that they haven't
improved at all. Needless to say, I am not a VAC member.

Subject: | metal in the oil. |
--> Yak-List message posted by: cjpilot710@aol.com
A couple days ago someone asked about metal in the oil, and someone said it
sounded like lead.
I'm fairly sure that's not correct. The last time my brother who is a superb
engine man, heard of lead being used in aircraft engines, was the R2800 where
a coating was used on some bearing surfaces. The main metals that were used
in engines are:
Steel: Very hard, magnetic, shinny.
Aluminum: Soft, non magnetic, shinny.
Bronze: Soft, non magnetic, golden color
Babbit: Soft, non magnetic, dull light gray
Brass Hard, non magnetic, shinny yellow
Most likely the metal you saw in you oil is aluminum. It is non magnetic and
soft. It usually comes from piston wear. Believe me if one of you pistons
starts to break up, you'll see lots of it in the filter.
Babbit, could (repeat could) be used in this engine, but I don't know for
sure.
Brass, is I believe use in the valve guides. At least when I changed one on
my Chinese engine (a 260 hp HS-6), it looked and acted like brass.
The only place that I (repeat I) know of that lead can be found on these
airplanes is in the air (pneumatic) system in the airframe. Just about all the
check valves, QS1 & QS2 valves use soft lead washer as seals. I don't think its
possible for this to get into the engine in any way.
The best thing for these engines is a real oil filter. When you open one up,
it tells the hidden, inside, nasty little (or BIG) story of you engine.

Other metals found in Round engines:
Chrome: from rings running in steel cylinders. Looks like
shiny flakes or chips.
Silver: used to plate the master bearing. Flakes, seeing
this is serious
Lead: Used to cover and protect the silver plating on the
master bearing. Flakes may mean bearing galling. Balls of
lead may be the resultant of lead fouling in the spark
plugs, common if 100LL is used. Just check the inside bottom
of the spark plugs; those balls of lead either work their
way in the plug or spill out in the crankcase, hence, oil.
On large radials, an X-ray or ultrasound photo must be made
of the master bearing, all 360 degrees. Each OH should have
a proof photo map. Not done on our engines but can be
performed by the west coast large engine shops.

See! That's why I'm not a power plant mechanic. To justify my brother's
forgetfulness about lead, I woke him early this morning from a deep sleep, after
he had worked in a test cell until 4 am. He wasn't all there.

I can make a block plate for the tach generator. CNC machined and polished for
$25. I have the horizon tach as well and designed the plate for my 55M . It will
take a week or two to make a batch up.

We have a Horizon digital tach on our aircraft and we would like to remove
the Tach Generator. Does anyone make a block off plate for the tach drive
port on the engine (M14)?
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Marshall
