OK guys, it looks like the Aiken(AIK) Fly-in is a GO. So far we have the
following signed up, a few possibles until later in the month. We're
planning A LOT of formation practice, not a FAST clinic at this time but
looks like we have plenty of instructors if you're new. If you have
quesitons or comments give me a call.

During a recent rainy day I reviewed various flight notes I
took during X-county flights. Even after 2 M-14P engines, I
still tend to use Huosai power settings. A few calculations
and graphing of recommended power settings reveals that I
typically use only 35% - 50% of available power (except for
races). Note NOT % of RPM settings but available HP, as per
my Russian engine logbook. I use a typical setting of 2150
RPM and 630MM, which will yield a solid 140 KIAS. 2250 RPM
and 700MM will get 153-155 KIAS. At altitude (9,500-11,500),
2250rpm and 620/640mm (depends on OAT) I can get 160+ KTAS
but the throttle is fairly well forward.
Most of these settings lightly load the pistons/rings; low
MP at engine RPMs of 2150 to 2250. Question: Would the
engine get better oil comsumption and efficiency at higher
MP and lower RPMs, as per the "book"? Otherwise, I'm happy
with fuel burns at these settings and IAS.

According to many, many folks with whom I have spoken to about this issue,
most of which flew radial engine aircraft in WWII, they all say to fly the
radial "over square" or with higher manifold pressures and lower RPM.
Basically, they are agreeing with "the book" you refer to. Ironically, the
Russian M14 engine manual and YAK 52 flight manual say the same thing.
I've taken to heart what these highly experienced WWII pilots have told me
and now use "the book" method/settings and I seem to get better fuel
economy, lower oil consumption. Also lower RPM means less wear. Plus the
engine is turning the prop versus the prop trying to turn the engine (as
these fine gentlemen have so eloquently explained it).

It is weird. I guess oil analysis is the only way to go, as Jay said.
Still not sure it was lead, could also have been ali I suppose. Only
thing I know for sure was it could easily be crushed flat. Tiny bit not
large enough to weigh to determine whether or not it was lead or ali.
Next time (hope there isn't a next time) I will take small piece of
known lead and heat the 2 side by side, for a quick field test?

You guys are loosing me, as an aircraft mechanic both fixed wing and
helicopters for the past 40 years, I have never seen balls of lead form
on a chipdetector, ferrious metal and carbon yes but not lead. Ball of
lead on plugs and in cylinders yes but not in the oil. What am I

You'll sleep a lot better if you just do an oil analysis after each oil
change. It doesn't cost much, and will warn you of an impending danger
once a baseline is established. The analysis company will even call you
if they notice something out of the norm.
