Guys,
Take it upstairs, may I remind you that this thread started regarding a
downed pilot, start another thread or take it somewhere else.
Some respect would be nice.

I'd be curious to hear some of his statistics on the subject. You know,
average frequency, duty cycle, solubility rates, etc.

Well, it does have something to do with this list since the list runs on the Internet.
How's that for stretching a point?

And I am not a liberal, just a libertarian. *BIG* difference.

Subject: | New CJ's and other musings |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Doug Sapp" <rvfltd@televar.com>
Listers and lurkers,
Just a short (well it started out to be short) note and a few observations
gained during the recent 3 week China trip.
First the story about the factory stopping the production of new CJ6
aircraft in 2005 seems hard to substantiate now. It was the main topic
during my last visit, but now they seem to not be so sure. Last year there
was much talk about a new turbine powered trainer, but no one seems to know
anything about it now.
Second, and I know we can expect a flood of posting from Fan as I am sure
she is lurking on the list, telling me that I am wrong, but Eaglet is NOT
the sole seller of new Nanchang aircraft. They would very much like to be
and are trying hard to be, but at this time they are not. I have found that
my parts vendor is very capable of providing new aircraft at a price point
below that of Eaglet. Eaglet is CATIC, CATIC is a very big outfit who
demands a big profit. They must buy from the factory, add their margin,
then sell to the US market. If they have a monopoly and are the only
seller, only then can get their big profit, that's why they are working
overtime to convince us that if we want a new CJ we must buy from them.
Yes, it's true she had me convinced also, but I have discovered that it's
simply not the fact. There are many half truths and outright lies in China,
a case in point is the line drawing of the aux fuel system on the brochure
that Eaglet sent to many of us. Looks disturbingly like my aux fuel system
doesn't it!!?! Copying is a way of life in China. I was amazed that they
would include me in their mailing. El grandee huevos!!
Third, parts supplies seem to continue to be good, although electrical stuff
seem to be at a premium lately with attitude indicators close to the cost of
a US electric unit. During my visit I found another vendor who has a fair
inventory of mostly new parts and claims to have continued access to the air
base parts inventories. I look for parts like fairings and cowlings to rise
in cost in the next year as most of the air base inventories of these parts
are for the 260hp,old style cowls with the smaller air intake. These would
have to be modified, and at this time the late model larger scoop is only
available at the factory and it is very expensive, to make things tougher
yet the production time is 4 months!
Fourth, stainless steel 285 hp exhaust continue to be produced by the
factory, and they like it so much they are talking about using it
themselves!! For some strange reason they insist on using standard steel
exhaust nuts on theirs.
Fifth, Iran vs. overhaul: We have all heard the various CJ sellers say that
their aircraft were "overhauled" in China. The problem here is that in the
US the term "overhaul" basically means that the part was rebuilt to new
standards, this normally means that all wear parts as well as rubber parts
and springs, etc were replaced, and the part is now close to new in it's
condition. In China, however overhaul means the same as IRAN (Inspect,
Repair, As Necessary) does here in the US. I recently entered into an
agreement to set up a "Overhaul" facility near the Nanchang factory. The
first 7 aircraft were being processed when I arrived. I was surprised to
see 7 100% empty, completely gutted aircraft! The workers had removed all
components from the aircraft, including all the hard and soft hoses and
lines, even the electrical looming was removed for inspection. All parts
were sent to the various facilities for testing. During testing the inop or
sub standard parts are red tagged and discarded, while the parts which
operate within the correct standards of their test set are repainted and
returned to the overhaul facility. The rejected red tagged parts are
replaced with factory new parts. This would seem to answer the question of
why a given part looks as if it was just painted and not really opened up
and overhauled (given a Dupont overhaul as my daddy called it). In reality
these parts most likely have been checked and were found to be operational
and not in need of repair, so in their mind are ok to put back on a
"overhauled" aircraft.
Those of you that are waiting for parts, best to check with me in about 2
weeks as a shipment is due in about then.
I'm still about 3 time zones out, so I guess It's time for more coffee (or a
nap), feel free to give me a call if you have any questions.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

Doug I think you are commenting on the difference in Chinese and Russian philosophy
of maintenance. This same philosophy carries thru to their first line fighters.
An engine that has been overhauled to their standards has a life expectancy
greater than the engines that have been imported with out this level of maintenance.
The previously imported engines have given many hours of service.

One of my greater fears is that one day Doug Sapp will tire of this business
and decide to live a normal life. Should he ever abandon this labor of love,
we will much the poorer. Thanks for all your hard work and devotion, Doug.

Ira;
"K bottle" is slang for a high pressure steel air tank. It's about 4 or
5 foot tall and is usually pressurized in the thousands of
pounds....thus the name K Bottle. If you've ever seen a gas welding
outfit then you know what a K bottle looks like.
For K bottles of compressed air try Praxair at http://www.praxair.com or
you might try http://www.linde.com/en/en.jsp
I get a large bottle exchanged for about $34. I had to buy the bottle
initially. Cost me about $120......way cheaper than a scuba bottle. The
compressed air Praxair supplies is the same stuff they use for supplying
breathing air to hospitals without all the close controls on it's
distribution and is drawn from the same tanks. The air is extremely dry
so it will help keep your system free of moisture.
You may be able to find a distributor in your local area. There are many
distributors of compressed air if you do a search for specialty gas
suppliers. Good Luck!

Hi frank,
We use a Scuba tank to refill our air in fairly stock YAK 52.
What is a K Bottle?
