The following announcement has been added to the info regarding the June 9-13 fly-in.
For all of those in the North-Central region the winter has been long and it is
time to get out and fly.
Herb Coussons
I have made arrangements for the FAST Clinic portion of our event to earn the FAA
Wings Certificate. There should be enough instructors present to also complete
the necessary 3 flight hours allowing participants to complete there Wings
without costs and in replacement for the Flight Review if interested. re:

Also, Rodger Modglin and I (Team Red) will be performing our two-ship formation aerobatic air show routine for those interested. We will be around to give pointers also to those interested in executing performance maneuvers while in formation. re: www.teamredwarbirds.com

Listers and lurkers,
This should serve as a reminder to us all to keep our heads out of the
cockpit as much as possible and make sure we are at the correct altitude.
This happened in VFR conditions.
FROM AVWEB--
But For The Grace...
Sometimes you see the wreckage and wonder how anyone got out alive. If
this Beech Baron had been flying a few inches to the right, we likely
wouldn't be wondering how Robert Hollis Gates, of Tehachapi, Calif.,
managed to land the plane safely after a midair with a Cessna 180 last
Jan. 16. The Baron lost a section of fuselage, but Gates walked away
with cuts and bruises. The 180 broke up in flight and the pilot,
40-year-old David Lazerson, a civilian test pilot instructor at Edwards
Air Force Base and deputy director of the Joint Strike Fighter
Integrated Test Force, was killed. According to the NTSB report, Gates
said he was in cruise climb between 5,500 and 6,500 feet near Tehachapi
when he saw the right gear leg of the Cessna coming at him from one o'
clock. He ducked, then saw a dirt strip and managed to set the Baron
down.

And sometimes you just can't help it even when you do everything right.
Several years ago I was flying home from work in my Piper Clipper (high-wing tube-and-fabric
tail dragger). I had just leveled off at my cruising altitude of
5,500 feet when a Bonanza passed right overhead about 5 feet above me. He was
going to Cameron Park too as he dwindled in my windscreen with neither altitude
nor relative bearing changing until he disappeared from view. I had chosen
not to get flight following from ATC that day.
It was dusk but my position lights and strobes were on.
He came right up my 6. I could never have seen him. It is pure dumb luck that
I am alive. Those extra eyes at ATC are really nice to have when flying but
you have to ask for them.

Cant always rely on Flight Following either. Just yesterday I was flying
from my Home to Orlando Int in the CJ. I was talking with Orlando Approach.
All of a suddent I saw a 182 at my 12:30 level coming right at me about 1/2
mile away. I banked to the left to avoid him. While I was manuvering, ATC
informed me of the aircraft.

The Cheyenne (both friends of mine) and the Cessna 172 over DEN last
year were "flight following" also. It (flight following) is great but
not the ONLY thing.

Brian,
This sounds familiar but two years ago I was flying back from Block Island
at 9,500 Ft, under flight following, when the same thing happened to me, and
yes it was a Bonanza, maybe there is a trend here, maybe it was the same
guy. I was in the 52 I could not resist the call
"New York Approach N52EK"
"N52EK go ahead"
"New York Approach, 52EK has visual Bonanza 1:00, PART NUMBER ON THE PROP
WAS 157-364"
"52EK, Traffic 1:00 your altitude, no factor"
Funny but almost not.

Apparently this happens allot more than I realized............
Over Lake Mathews (a well known practice area) in Riverside County
California an RV-4 passed over me about 20 feet above and to my left. It
was a racy looking red and white number.
Ontario airport, eastern most part of it's outer shelf extends down to
2500 from 5000. I was at 2000 when a Lear Jet passed behind me no more
than 50' back. Probly had his head in the instruments doing a (low)
approach.
Flying east about 10 miles south of Apple Valley airport headed to
Lucern Valley in a C-152. An F-15 passes me at astronomical speed maybe
100 feet up and to my right.
Flying east towards Big Bear airport above Arrowhead Lake, a Twin
Bobanza climbing out passes me to my left, slightly below and to my left
maybe 100 feet away.
This is all Southern California airspace......lots of aviation activity
in this area. Needless to say, my head is on a swivel when I fly around
here.........

Now the next question should be what are the chances of a Bonanza causing a
bad day for someone else AND being piloted by a Doctor ?
Question for Tom Johnson, are the insurance rates for Doctors at the helm of
a Bonanza higher than for others.
If not, why not :)))))

It doesn't even work all the time when IFR. We were IMC over Florida at
5,000 when we popped out of the clouds for a moment. Just then a small twin
belly upped to us and we dove away. ATC never called it. We hollered and
they said they had a "radar problem". There but for the grace of God.......

Subject: | All Red Star 2004 REGISTRATION! |
--> Yak-List message posted by: Barry Hancock <radialpower@cox.net>
Registration is now open for All Red Star 2004! This year we have
simplified things further with a less complicated fee structure (you
don't have to do any math!) and the ease of using PayPal to pay for
your event fees. (All fees fully refundable if event is cancelled due
to weather, etc.) Again, the dates are May 12-16.
There are a few of you on this list that have already registered, and I
will send the link directly to the fees page.
We have again tried to build on last year's event and have made the
following improvements:
-Catered dinners on site every night
-A BIG All Red Star Ops tent on the flight line
-Jet Formation Training
-New Presentations on topics like the ACE program and being an Airshow
pilot by Eddie Andreini (Yak-9), Landing on a Carrier (not practical,
but interesting and entertaining), Low Level flying, and Jet
Emergencies.
and
-Professional 3-Camera video production crew to produce a DVD of the
event.
This is in addition, of course, the smorgasbord of activities that make
ARS a unique aviation event. FAST training (props and jets this
year!), Tactical Form and ACM (for FAST qualified or military
equivalent pilots), 4-ship Formation Challenge, 2-ship bomb drop
competition, Tri-Tip BBQ (this year on the flight line with fly-overs)
and Crud Tournament, and Saturday Night Banquet. Our speaker at the
Saturday night banquet will be Vietnam Ace Capt. Steve Ritchie
(USAF-Ret.). All costs (rooms, meals, snacks, drinks, event fee,
training fee, etc.) are included...the only thing else you have to pay
for is fuel!
We had 65 aircraft at last year's event, and would like to at least top
that number this year. With PayPal this year, the whole registration
process should take less than 5 minutes! Please go to
www.allredstar.com and it will walk you through the process. (Note:
if you have registered at the RPA site, please contact me off list.)
Hope to see you at All Red Star 2004!

No, it is not. It is just another pair of eyes looking for traffic. ATC has seen
many that I didn't and vice-versa.

There is a time to laud one's country and a time to protest.
A good citizen is prepared to do either as the need arises.

Well let's see, you got yer stereo, you got yer autopilot, you got yer GPS, you
got yer collision avoidance system. Why look outside?

Years ago when as a young PAA 707 copilot, I flew with a captain named Roger
Manchester great deal, particularly in Africa. Roger NEVER flew right on our
assigned altitude. Sometime 100 or 200 feet above or below. You felt
sometimes, he was dodging flak in slow motion. He felt he was safer and would
tell
of a near miss in mid Atlantic where the fact that he was off altitude saved
them from a mid air.
Old Roger was one of PAA "characters." Before WW2 he had been collage
student at the U of Cairo, in Egypt. He had ridden a bicycle from Cairo to London.
He had flown in Africa with PAA for so long that he could drink the water!
He retired and as an old man, one evening at a party at his home, he suddenly
told his guests, 'This is a nice night to die,' walked out on to his deck, sat
down and died. I learned a lot from "Roger's Rules".
One of the Goolsby rules of the air "Never use the same airspace that other
people use". On the glass cockpit airplanes, I would offset 1 or 2 nm right of
track on the FMC. With GPS, it can be unnerving seeing a opposite aircraft
bore sighting you on an airway over the Amazon jungle. I even off set my
altitude at times. I never fly right on the VFR cardinal altitudes (3,500 4,500).
If I'm following interstates or railroads, I stay on the right, which I can
tell you, has saved me a lot more than once.
My worse scare? Seeing the oil flow pattern on the belly of a cream and two
tone brown Banonza though the front wind shield of my 727, as we climbed out
of the TCA for New York. I thought our T tail would hit him but it didn't. I
KNOW HE HEARD US!
