Gents:
I must say that I am sorry to see the sorry reception given to my flying
colleagues who are practicing the Hippocratic arts. Thankfully, not all of us
are
in Bonanzas...some of us are flying Yaks and CJ's. Remember, docs are just
tradespeople trying to make a living and put a little 100LL in the tank. Most
docs are relatively underpaid, given the amount of training involved--most
make far, far less than airline captains (who may indeed be better pilots). Docs
also, generally, pay for their own medical, dental, disability and life
insurance and fund their own retirement completely on their own. Thank the good
Lord (I do, daily) that there is a little left over for that 100LL. It is rare,
but occasionally we even help people.
Now, let's get back to hating lawyers and politicians, whom we all can agree
deserve every ounce of venomous opprobrium.

John if I practiced medicine like most big bird drivers (jet jockeys) fly YAKs,
CJ's and Bonanzas I would not have my license long. I am the beneficiary of
a beautiful YAK 52 that was crunched on one of its first flights. This man had
many commercial ratings and paid megabucks to fly that heavy iron. Both medicine
and flying are learned skills that take practice and humility to keep that
edge. Nothing takes the place of setting aside time for continuing education
and recurrency training. Both Docs and airline captains have an abundance
of testosterone that have unfortunately have often killed them. I have two YAKs
and one A-36 Bonanza. I feel safer when I fly commercially when I learn they
are teaching more unusual attitude recovery in flight training using small
airplanes. Most pilots have never felt the sensation of flying inverted or up
close and personal with another plan. We are so very fortunate to have our FAST
tickets and aerobatic training. There are 50 Bonanzas flying for every one
of our birds. It is a certificated plane and ours are experimental. We don't
get as much press. We have been financially fortunate to afford to continue
our flight training in these great airplanes but we are all part of the same
aviation community. Some don't have the choices we have. We had a thread on
FOD recently which I really liked...let's find other safety issues and concerns
that we can share with fellow pilots and spend our time ragging on the lawyers!!

Jim that series of mails was initiated by Tom Johnson and was initiated by
insurance concerns. Tom, From your records, what are the big ticket items,
apart from the FOD issue ? If you have any analysis of failures/accidents I
think that knowledge of these issues would spark conversation, and then
understanding, and maybe avoidance.
But, until Tom can give us that I put forward for your consideration gear
warning systems, what have you done, how did you fit it what are the issues.

Herb and Shane-
My name is Tom Cappelletti and I am a UPS 757 First Officer. I am trying to
put a 4 ship of Mig-17/15 aircraft to honor George Cambron at his funeral
service in SDF (louisville KY) this coming Saturday.
George died on Thursday when his Mig-17 crashed outside of Truth or
Consequences NM after departing Roswell NM for Deer Vally Airport in
Phoenix, AZ.
Together with 2500 UPS pilots in Louisville and all his USMC, L-39, and
Mig-17 friends we would like to honor our brother pilot.
As the SE and NC coordinator for the RPA, could you please help me reach
out to the MIG community to get some aircraft to SDF on Saturday ?
I am not a warbird pilot nor do I own one but I feel very strongly that we
should try and honor George in this manner. I had the privilage to fly with
him at UPS as his 757 co-pilot and lived in PHX for 5 years where I met him
coming and going from his jet.
We have facilities at Clark County Airport in IN set up to bed down any
aircraft who come in to town. The father of one of our UPS 757 Captains owns
the FBO there so he will accomodate all aircraft.
In addition we are trying to set a fund from our union, the IPA, to help
pay for gas and expenses for the pilots and their jets.
PLEASE HELP ME OUT GUYS !!!!!!!!!! I need a number for Will Ward in Saline,
MI and Dave Sutton in Reading, PA ASAP.
I can be reached at 303-522-2912 (cell) or email at tcplt@earthlink.net.
This email is my government email when I work in the AF Reserve.
Thanks for your assistance-
Tom Cappelletti

Troops headed for S&F,
The area where we will be tie-down our aircraft - has no tie downs. You will
need you own ropes and stakes.
Once again the airport is GIF (Winter Haven Gilford field)

Jay, since you spoke up, when is your NATIONAL CONVENTION held at your air
field for 125 aircraft, all meals included, and nights lodging on the field?
In California, $35 night in a hotel is CHEAP, even if you live elsewhere in
the USA this is cheap. Then food, beer, t-shirts, permits, Vietnam Fighter
ACES as guest speaker,,,,,,Maybe we can all stay at Jay's house..........that
will lower the costs.
They do not see the trees amongst the forest............ Hope to see all the
rational people at Redstar III. It will be the talk of 2004 as it always is.
Expensive donations from sponsors (Aircraft Spruce, Oregon Aero, ADC Oil
Filters, Shields Sun glasses, Cannon Aviation Insurance and Yak Driver, are
just some of the sponsors this year) and TV coverage at this year's event I
hear..........Hope to see you all there!!

Mark, I wish I could go to All Red Star this year. I looked at the itinerary
and the fees for the various events, and for what you get - that is
downright reasonable!
I put together an annual fly-in weekend in Santa Maria (coming up 4/30-5/2),
and know how much work it is - and that's only 2.5 days. What Barry puts
together is an incredible effort, and with the flying element... There are
countless hours of work to be done in coordinating a smooth-running event,
which generally dips below minimum wage once you add it all up. :-)
I hope you guys have a great time! Way to go, Barry!
best, Cory

Jay,
Do you mean that the event cost is way too expensive for what you get or it
is simply too expensive for you.
If you really mean that its too much for what you get than - hmmm... I
don't really know what to say - a reality check may be in order. I would
respectfully suggest for you to try to put down on a piece of paper what, in
your estimation the cost for each of the event's element Barry listed (there
are so many more not listed) would be in your 'neck of the woods' - I trust
it would be substantially higher - let alone putting in many 26 hours days
to ensure it all runs as it should. You would know what I am talking about
if you have ever organized a small local event at your airport...
Now, if the cost is simply to high for you to afford - I tip my hat to you
with understanding. There are many of us who had to cut back recently
(myself included).
Having said all that - I only wish I could be a part of Red Star 2004!!
Looks like I am going to miss another great event.
Mark is right, you know... this is going to be the talk of the rest of the
year.
