I wanted to confirm or have a contact to talk to Gennady Elfimov about participating. Also for the rest of the group - I was not involved in the previous MTW/OSH fly in with Red Star (but going to OSH since 1992 and living in Green Bay since 2002). How would people want to see the aerobatic box function? Would we want to have it open some time every day or just the beginning of the week prior to OSH? How many hours every day and what hours? It appears that 2 years ago it was operational just on the 3 days Sun, Mon, Tues before OSH on Wed and was operational for about 2-3 hours each morning. If we have aerobatic instruction available I would think we would want more time. But I would not want to cut into the rest of the flying those days prior to OSH. Let me know on the forum or off-line what you all think and want. The earlier the application the better. Why not apply for all days and just open it with a call to flight service? Then when the call is made just tell them what hours it will be open each day. We do this with our regular practice box in Oklahoma and it works fine. We will be arriving on Sunday so a box on that day would be desired. Plus we will take advantage of it in the early AM and late PM every day it is available. Thanks, Pumper ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 04:01:24 PM PST US From: MFilucci@aol.com Subject: Yak-List: RPA membership name@matronics.com, description@matronics.com, ----@matronics.com, ----------------------@matronics.com, --------------------------------------------------@matronics.com, 0.1@matronics.com, HTML_FONTCOLOR_BLUE@matronics.com, BODY:, HTML@matronics.com, font@matronics.com, color@matronics.com, is@matronics.com, blue@matronics.com --> Yak-List message posted by: MFilucci@aol.com In a message dated 4/14/04 8:57:01 AM Eastern Daylight Time, ernest.martinez@oracle.com writes: Who is the financial dude for RPA? GEN. STEVE RITCHIE TO BE PART OF AVIATION HISTORY AT ALL RED STAR 2004 We have been working on creating aviation history for All Red Star 2004. As most of you know, Brigadier General Steve Ritchie (USAF-Ret.) is scheduled as the keynote speaker for the Saturday evening Awards Banquet. Flying an F-4D with the famous 555th ("Triple Nickel") Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ritchie became the only Air Force jet ace by downing a MiG-21 on May 10, another on May 31, two on July 8 and his last on Aug. 28. After completing 339 combat missions totaling more than 800 flying hours, Ritchie returned as one of the most highly decorated pilots of the war, having received the Air Force Cross, four Silver Stars, 10 Distinguished Flying Crosses and 25 Air Medals. We are honored to have him as our guest. To commemorate this significant aviation achievement, we are working on putting together a ride for Gen. Ritchie with Sal Rubino, who has a 2-seat MiG-21 based at Castle. Many national and regional media outlets are interested in this flight and it will be a great way to honor Gen. Ritchie's accomplishment. SPONSORSHIP STRONG FOR ALL RED STAR 2004 An event hosting over 65 aircraft for 5 days does not happen without three things. One, cool people like you with cool airplanes that like cool events! Two, a huge volunteer effort. Three, sponsorship. I am happy to report that all three are again in large supply for this year's event. We are ahead of last year's registration pace. Our volunteer staff has grown in both quantity and quality. And companies like Aeroshell and Cannon Aviation Insurance have significantly upped their sponsorship pledges for this year's event. This allows us to expand and provide a better quality product while keeping the participant's (yes, you!) cost down. Other companies sponsoring this year's event include ADC Oil Filters, Aircraft Spruce, American Propeller, Desser Tire, Doug Sapp, E-Z Heat, Oregon Aero, Shields Sun Glasses, Silver Parachute Sales, and??? THE RAREST OF RED STAR AIRCRAFT??? The world=92s first low-wing monoplane fighter with a retractable landing gear, the Soviet-built Polikarpov I-16, is one of the world=92s rarest warbirds from the World War II era. Some 70 years after its introduction, attendees at All Red Star 2004 may get to see one of the six remaining flying examples of the aircraft. We are currently trying to coordinate schedules with pilot Dave Morss to make this happen. The Polikarpov measures just under 20 feet long and is powered by a 1,000 horsepower M-62 radial engine. It was considered well ahead of its time and performed admirably against the German fighters during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and against the Japanese Air Force in Manchuria in 1937. Polikarpovs were also the world=92s first rocket-equipped fighters. By the time Germany invaded Russia in 1941, however, the Polikarpov was obsolete. More than 7,000 of the I-16s were produced, and they served as Russia=92s front-line fighter well into 1943. Partly because of their appearance and durability, the Soviets had several unique nicknames for the aircraft, including Rata (rat), Mosca (fly), Yastrebok (eagle) and Ishak (little donkey). Its all-wood, monocoque fuselage and 29-foot, 1.5-inch metal wings proved durable in battle, but the airplanes required highly skilled pilots to perform well. The airplanes were also very thirsty, holding 60 gallons of fuel, but burning 70 gallons-per-hour at top speed (304 mph). The manually operated main gears work through a series of drums, pulleys and cables and, according to Morss, require 45 turns to raise or lower. Six wrecked I-16s were restored to flying condition in New Zealand by the end of 1998, all of them Type 24s built in 1939. _________________________ ALL RED STAR 2004 WEB UPDATE In a continuing effort to make registration more streamlined, All Red Star is teaming with the web design crew at the RedStar Pilot's Association to bring cutting edge technology to the registration process. Much of what is being done is "back end" and won't be readily visible, but rest assured it will make your registration and in-processing at the event much more efficient. An update will be sent out when the "new" site goes live. _________________________ NEW APPROACH TO AIR COMBAT TRAINING Have you tried Air Combat? Are you interested but think it might be to tough for you? Well, think again! This is the third year of the Air Combat Training program and we are taking the lessons learned from our previous two years to provide an even better product for all our participants this year. Former F/A-18 Instructor and current Yak-50 owner John Hilterman has volunteered to run this year's program and is incorporating concepts to make our Air Combat training a fun experience for all, even if you don't want to pull 4 G's. This year there are two parts to the Air Combat program; Tactical Formation (or TACFORM), and Basic Fighter Maneuvers (or BFM). Tactical formation is something that all FAST rated pilots should try - it is fun, useful, and definitely adds to the bag of tricks for your weekend flights. The way the program is structured this year, you can fly only TACFORM if you wish, or after you are comfortable with TACFORM, the program moves into BFM, which teaches the basic maneuvering for Air Combat. This is all in a very structured, learning objective oriented atmosphere that can easily be accomplished at 3 G's. Of course, if you want to pull on the pole for all your worth, have at it! I'm sure you won't break our IP's! For more information on the ACM program at All Red Star 2004, contact me directly via email or phone. __________________________ TWO'S IN, KEROSENSE STYLE This year marks the first official year of FAST formation training in jets at All Red Star. Classic Jet Aircraft Association Chairman and FAST Check Pilot Doug Gillis will be running the jet portion of the FAST clinic this year. We are excited to have this service at All Red Star as it will definitely attract more aircraft to the event. The CJAA has endorsed All Red Star and is fully behind our motto "Props to Jets. One team, No Limits!" We are still working on a program to cut the costs of the jet formation program by doing a piston transition phase, however FAA and insurance regulations pose a challenge to the viability of such a concept. I know it is hard to believe that the FAA would stand in the way of a good idea... For more information on the CJAA, please visit www.classicjets.org __________________________ MEDIA COVERAGE BIGGER AND BETTER AT ALL RED STAR 2004 Thanks again to a great volunteer effort, writers and journalists from major aviation publications will be on hand to cover this year's event. Among the rags articles will be written for are AOPA Pilot, Flying, In Flight USA, Pacific Flyer, and EAA Warbirds. This year we are also scheduled to have TV coverage from the Bay Area and Sacramento, particularly if we can finalize the Ritchie ride in a MiG-21. Additionally, there will be a 3 camera video production crew there producing a DVD of the event. I am also hearing that a national monthly cable program will be sending a crew for the event. That's the latest news from this year's event. If you still have not registered, please visit www.allredstar.com and follow the links.
