--> Yak-List message posted by: "cpayne@joimail.com" <cpayne@joimail.com> Red Stars: Most of the A/C departed today under clear skys. Craig Ekberg departed with a nice plaque for "Best CJ/Yak" at SNF for his CJ-6A. Under the Judge's Choice category, Richard Hess received "Newest Warbird" for his CJ-6G, and Fred Souters got "Best New Warbird" for his Yak-52TW. SNF also saw our 8-plane "Swan Formation", hope someone posts pics. Leeward Ranch flyout was great as always under perfect weather, featuring rareities such as a "Black Cat" or PBY Catalina doing low passes, P-40E "Grand Champion WW-II" and a variety of warbird acro during the lunch airshow. Published results from Aircraft Spruce's races show Yours Truely winning "Sportsman" at 185.6 Knots....that's 213.7 MPH or 343.7 KPH. Since I finally got a clean run with good engine and airframe preparation, I'll retire '85' from formal competition. However, grudge matches are always encouraged. The Camel now has his head under the tent. P.S. the long suffering T-34's had to fly BEHIND the RPA; Hoo Haw! Craig Payne

--> Yak-List message posted by: cjpilot710@aol.com It was a good year a S&F but we had our problems too. Something to think about guys, when one of us screws up in front of the other WB guys, we all (RPA) look bad. You the offender, may not hear it from them, but we as your leaders DO. Big time. To have one of our wingman get lost over the airshow airport only to land at a field some 9 miles away is a little hard to understand. But your's truly caught all kinds of crap from our peers. I don't pretend to understand how or why it happened. It just shouldn't have. Talk about no SA! ALSO How many times has it been said here and other web sites, you do not fly formation in an airshow (wavered airspace) unless you have a FAST formation card in you pocket? While most of us were up at Leewards on Friday last, one of our Yak 52 drivers flew formation in the show without a FAST rating. He than shows up on Saturday expecting to fly formation with us in the show and seem a little out of shape when I had him fly "Stinger". I assigned him to a 50 yard spacing behind us, which he than violated. I saw pictures that prove it. Most of you know I'm an easy going guy. But I do not like putting my trust in someone hopeing to accommodate them somewhat but staying within the rules, and they than take advantage of it. So gentlemen there will be no more "Stingers" in formations I lead at airshows. Always leave on a good word. Our "Swan" formation was the talk of the show guys, at least by those who count. I had a very well known and excellent aviation photographer who caught our early morning practice fly over. Evidently when I pop smoke, it drew the attention of the entire crowd below. We were the center point of every one's attention each time we flew over. His words. Also our opening airshow flyover the "Triple Cross" was near perfect as you can get. Particularly when the airboss (bless his black heart) kept changing the time. As the airfield went under my nose I saw the T-6 at our one o'clock and the T-28s at our 11 o'clock crossing at a right angle to each other while we were straight up the middle in our "Swan". Only Bob Leadford's practiced eye picked out the very slight out of spacing, which nobody saw. We did a beautiful job. The food was good, the company great AND we started a new tradition. What is it? Well, you'll just have to buy a round of drinks to find out. Jim Goolsby "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety" Benjamin Franklin 1759 "With my shield, or on it" Trojan Warriors BC "The reason older men are like fine wine. When young, they are like grapes until some woman stomps all over them." Unknown older man.
