Does anyone have any experience in getting an aircraft Type Certified, so
that it can carry passengers for hire, etc.

Folks, I think there is a letter or something to fill out from the EAA
that will allow you to instruct in an Experimental/Exhibition airplane.
So, check with the EAA.

I have just returned from Moscow, and believe this project is definitely going
ahead.
New aircraft will be made from carefully selected old airframes; totally rebuilt;
216-litres total of fuel - with completely new "wet" wings; with Zvesda extraction
systems - some delay since they need left and right-hand actuating ones,
not currently made. Also an automatic time separation between the two to avoid
the two shoots tangling. Not sure which cockpit gets priority!
100-kilograms weight penalty (220lbs), but performance wise no difference with
3-blade prop.
First aircraft was flown in early April.

--> Yak-List message posted by: "James Enkema" <lennoxlimited@earthlink.net>
Two questions...My 1989 YAK in hot weather and cool nights will push fuel overboard
and start a siphon. The rest you know. I keep the cap cracked open. This
only happens on the left wing tank. I have taken the vents out and have run
safety wire up the one that comes out the belly. My 1991 YAK52 has an additional
vent at the top of the tank and I do not seem to have the problem. Was
this a fix?
Behind door #2 Question:
In flight the main bottle recharges but the small emergency tank does not. I know
in the past I have filled from the aux air port and I only need to do this
about every two years. Should the small tank charge from the compressor? I
have 5.5 atmospheres on main and 3.5 currently on emergency tank.
opps I thought of one more. I have removed the aux air fitting from the planes
and tapped 1/8" NPT and put a standard JIC fitting. When I remove the fitting
then I put a plug in so if the check valve is leaking. Surely someone has come
up with a better solution than this. HELP! I use a large air tank from local
air products supplier and an oxygen regulator to regulate the air into the
plane plus I had a difficult time finding fittings to get from air tank to 1/4"
JIC...they really don't want you bypassing a regulator.
Well as I write I think of one more thing. This Russian instructor that will be
in Penn. Please someone give me particulars. Is this an opportunity for any
YAK driver or do you need to be apart of a specific organization? What is the
identifier of the field he will be giving instruction so I can see how far
from SC that would be. Please give me some contact info. I do not want to miss
the opportunity

I believe the RAF gives a "command" to the back seat, selectable from the front
seat also the front man has the option of going before rear man, in this case
one would assume a delay is instigated. Rear seat command is so that navigator/
instructor can get a pilot out in event of bird strike and pilot in capacitated.
Perhaps some RAF/ USAF pilots may comment?
An interesting thing in this "upgrade" from (http://www.yak.ru/ENG/PROD/new_52M.php#general ) is that the life is now 30 years and 3000 hours in addition to a max T/O weight of 1423kgs at 6G.
With our long range fuel we manage 280 lts and still keep inside 1415kgs 2 persons
full fuel.

Subject: | Emergency tank YAK 52 and aux air fitting |
--> Yak-List message posted by: Bitterlich GS11 Mark G <BitterlichMG@cherrypoint.usmc.mil>
Door #2: The YAK-50 fills both tanks from the engine compressor (Note to a
emergency bottle on the 52, you must fill from the external air filling
port. Good question as to why, although it may be to try and keep any
moisture out of the emergency tank/bottle. Regardless, since all the 50's
do it, it would be hard to imagine why a person could not plumb the 52's to
do it as well? Flames welcomed, I'd be interested in educated reasons why
NOT to do so.
The external air filler fitting for the Yak is the same as the Sukhoi and is
still in production. It is not very hard to get one. The only trick is
making an "American" hose fitting to mate to it. The Russian fitting uses a
standard 37 degree flare, so it is pretty easy to take a standard Russian
size aluminum line (with connectors and flares at both ends) and cut one end
off, reflare it, and put a standard #5 American fitting on that end, VOILA:
American to Russian adapter. To me, this seems much easier than changing the
fitting on the aircraft.
I know you should use those really nice (and expensive) dual air gages on a
bottle, but most people I know... including yours truly, just run a line
right from a big ole nitrogen bottle (filled with compressed AIR) or a scuba
tank,.... slowly crack the valve while watching the cockpit air gage, and
rely on the aircraft's internal over-pressure pop-off valve to work properly
if one goes a tad over 50 Atmospheres (735 PSI).
Actually I think you may mean you have 55 Atmospheres on the main and 35 on
the emergency. The Russian gage leaves off the training "0". Thus you have
514 PSI on the backup bottle. This is plenty of air to lower the gear in a
NORMAL situation. The gear actuators on the 52 are not the same as on a 50,
but I BELIEVE (not sure) that the feed restrictor system is the same. Thus,
when you open the valve for the emergency system, you feed unrestricted full
bottle pressure straight to the gear actuators. Normally... at least in the
50, the air goes through restrictors (a "washer" with a very small hole in
it located at the actuator air fitting(s). This helps to controls the speed
of the gear going up and down. With unrestricted air, 735 PSI would be
enough to lower the gear even if the internal seals were torn to pieces....
probably. So, "how much air you need" in the emergency bottle is a function
of: "Just what went wrong to begin with". I'd suggest keeping the emergency
bottle at 50 Atmospheres.
r/s,
Mark Bitterlich

I have 5.5 atmospheres on main and 3.5 currently on emergency tank.
The only way to charge the emergency bottle is via the ground service port. The
emergency system is not connected to the compressor and only operates the landing
gear and brakes.

Well, Mark, they did have shorts on. Cut-off shirts, YES. The back had
"GESOCO Industries" on them and I didn't pay much attention to what was
written on the front. I think something like "Wanna Yak?", but I was
distracted.
Cheers, Dave

The answer is quite logical. Isolating the emergency system from the main
prevents potential loss of both air systems should a leak occur. Yes, it
could be plumbed, but why? If the emergency system is secure, it should not
leak down regardless of what the main system does. That does not apply to
the 50. There really is only 3 items that can leak in the emergency system,
assuming the valves are closed. 1- The B nut on the tank or the tank itself
of course; 2-The check valve that connects to the external air fill port; 3-
Either one of the valves or B nuts coming to the valves from the emergency
air tank,in the cockpits.
Personally, I think the 52's system is more secure and provides effective
redundancy versus the 50's system for the reason mentioned above.

Answers
1- Yes
2- No
3- Install a 1/4" NPT Schrader Valve with a high pressure valve core
directly on the round cap. About $6 worth of parts.

Answers
1- Yes
2- No
3- Install a 1/4" NPT Schrader Valve with a high pressure valve core
directly on the round cap. About $6 worth of parts.

overboard and start a siphon. The rest you know. I keep the cap cracked
open. This only happens on the left wing tank. I have taken the vents out
and have run safety wire up the one that comes out the belly. My 1991 YAK52
has an additional vent at the top of the tank and I do not seem to have the
problem. Was this a fix?

I know in the past I have filled from the aux air port and I only need to do
this about every two years. Should the small tank charge from the
compressor? I have 5.5 atmospheres on main and 3.5 currently on emergency
tank.

planes and tapped 1/8" NPT and put a standard JIC fitting. When I remove
the fitting then I put a plug in so if the check valve is leaking. Surely
someone has come up with a better solution than this. HELP! I use a large
air tank from local air products supplier and an oxygen regulator to
regulate the air into the plane plus I had a difficult time finding fittings
to get from air tank to 1/4" JIC...they really don't want you bypassing a
regulator.

opportunity for any YAK driver or do you need to be apart of a specific

instruction so I can see how far from SC that would be. Please give me some
contact info. I do not want to miss the opportunity

If it brings attention to us as a group and has a positive spin to it....Bring
them on!!!! Its better than getting lost over airshow front.........
I was getting a few calls asking if I knew anything about them. Just trying to
better understand what was going on at SnF and now I find that we have "YAK
GROUPIES!!!!" God Bless them (as long as they are pretty)
Maybe we need Yak groupies at REDSTAR.......

As far as good press goes I have been working on getting Gennady to be able
to perform at OSH. Unfortunately he is not able to perform this year but
next year he is on the list. Now I just need to figure out how to get him a
zero ft card without performing in the US. He has a card in the UK and does
enough in England to stay current. My question to the group is "What do
other performers from abroad do when they want to perform in the US ?"
What is really nuts here is that waiver cards are issued by ICAS. The
International part of the name would lead you to think that having an ICAS
card would allow you to perform Internationally, lokks like another thing
like the World Series, which is only played in the US.
Imagine the slack jaws on the faces of the yellow jacket T34s when a Yak 52
flys backwards under control :))))))))))
Lets see them do that and still have the same number of wings as when they
started.
Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
Gus

Folks,
I wanted to post this a few days ago after returning from our RPA event at Winterhaven/SunnFun.
As most know, we had a potentially dangerous and somewhat embarrassing event take
place when a wingman became lost during recovery of our warbird formation at
lakeland. It's significant to note this pilot opted not to train with the RPA
and instead parked at Lakeland, his involvement in our training and prep for
SunnFun was nil (this is addressed later). After looking at the situation, this
fact was a contributing factor to the incident. Other factors ranged from
miss-programmed GPS to missed communictions.
We also had a pilot apparently participate in the Sun n Fun airshow formation in
waivered airspace without FAST card qualification. It's important to note that
apparently, this pilot participated in this formation event while the RPA was
attending the Leeward fly-in. I have no idea if this pilot is a member of
the RPA at this time. But I want to point out his affiliation matters little;
his actions, based on his eastern block military trainer aircraft type, and implied
affiliation with the RPA and it's membership, results in a minor black-eye
for the association. The RPA attends these large events just as NATA and the
other associations do. The pilots represent their association, as the association
represents the pilots; the two are one in the same during these events.
In both situations, it is apparent we need to emphasize the requirement to train
together and stay together. Towards that end, the RPA will not allow any pilot
to participate in the associations sponsored mass formations at public events
(SunnFun, Osh, etc.) who do not participate in the associations planned training
/ prep events/sorties regardless of prior experience. We realize flying
to a remote base for training as we do at MTW may be seen as an inconvenience,
and if this is the case, the RPA can always use a ground spotter/video operator
at the airshow to help collect debrief footage/data.
The RPA continues to emphasize that all pilots attending RPA events carries onboard the "Airshow Kit", a collection of documents that are identical to, and meet all inspection criteria outlined in Order 8700 by the FAA event inspector. For more information on the Airshow Kit contents, see the event rtegistration page at www.flyredstar.org
We are eliminating basic FAST training from our OSH and Sun-n-Fun remote field events to concentrate on Mass Formation training and associated RPA social events. Before I start receiving hate mail on this, let me explain. The Regional Coordinators (RC) are responsible for assisting their regional membership in planning, organizing, staffing and advertising regional RPA clinics and fly-ins. If your local group has a significant need for a FAST clinic and need support getting it off the ground, please write your RC, their e-mails are listed on on the website (www.flyredstar.org). The RC is a coordinator; the events don't happen without a motivated host and organizing team - please volunteer! The RC will work with their membership and help us determine the best locations and dates to support regional training needs.
We are working on a mass formation program and presentation, the issue of the lost
wingman revealed lessons that will be included in this training.
If you haven't, log in to the new RPA website and take a look at event debriefing
for post clinic pictures...
If you would like to comment, e-mail me directly. I will also post this on the
"RPA Forums" which can be reached from the web site.

fly safe - and often!
