And to add fuel to the fire, may I point out that the check valve on the fill-port that prevents leak-down of the emergency bottle through the fill port is just as prone to failure as the check-valve between that main system and the emergency system. OTOH, by placing the check valve between the emergency system and the main system you gain the extra functionality of refilling the emergency system from the main system at no extra cost of failure. So you get more functionality with no greater probability of failure. Seems like a win to me. > On the other hand this was the norm in the 50's when my Yak was being built > in Russia and for some reason they (the Russians) saw fit to change the > system in later years. Rarely do people go to extra work, e.g. redesigning part of the system, without a good reason. It would be nice to find out why. If I had to guess it would probably have to do with introducing moisture and the potential for corrosion in the emergency system but that is just a wild-assed guess (WAG) on my part. -- Brian Lloyd 6501 Red Hook Plaza brian@lloyd.com Suite 201 http://www.lloyd.com St. Thomas, VI 00802 +1.340.998.9447 (voice) +1.360.838.9669 (fax) There is a time to laud one's country and a time to protest. Getting old, hell. When it comes to flying vs. sex: 1. I can fly all day and into the night (or all night and into the day). Even when I was much younger sex was limited to a couple of hours per day and even that wasn't continuous. 2. There is always something new and interesting in aviation. Sex does not seem to have changed much over the past, oh, 10,000 years or so. 3. And as far as the intenseness of the experience is concerned, unlimited acro and ACM take care of that. And then there are Wild Weasel missions. (YGTBSM) One day I was flying somewhere with a couple of friends, one of whom turned to me and flatly stated, "this is the most fun you can have." The rest of us joked with a comment about not being in bed. He then replied, "No, this *IS* the most fun you can have, *including* sex." I have come to the conclusion that he right. OTOH I don't plan to give up sex. You have to have something to do when you aren't flying or working on airplanes. We did a video shoot. It seems to handle well and be compatible at Yak/CJ formation speeds. In the hands of the former RAF fighter pilot, it looked solid. If anyone manages to corral some of those Yak Groupies, save a hairy legged one for this old Marine. Craig Payne

--> Yak-List message posted by: "James Enkema" <lennoxlimited@earthlink.net> I started this thread several days ago and have enjoyed the educated responses (banter). I will continue to add fuel to both arguments as to the correct way to plumb the emergency tank. I know now why the Russians have a smooth surface fitting at the external port location. FOD can be introduced into the air system of the YAKs very easily via the external port. I am going to try and locate a filter that will accomodate 60 atmospheres. By tapping the external fitting and putting in and taking out the threaded JIC fitting I introduced FOD in the form of very small metal shavings (two to be exact). One lodged firstly under the seat of the check valve just before the pressure relief valve thus I lost all my air in my main tank after removing the cylinder source air. Such high pressures caused the head to have a small dent in the ridge and embedded the small sliver of alum. in the soft seat. Secondly the check valve that keeps the emergency tank full had the same problem. Regarless of how the air was plumbed in flight both of these problems together would have made for a bad day. At the end of the day my take is that knowledge of how the system works empowers us to become more safe. The system is so robust and reliable we need to take notice when we go to fly and during preflight we see something regarding the air system that is not the same as it has always been. I think these are some of the same conclusions we came to about larger FOD. Always heads up!! Stay on the ground and determine why or the next thing you will be saying is "I f....up ouch!!" ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian Lloyd" <brian@lloyd.com> Subject: Re: Yak-List: Emergency tank YAK 52 and aux air fitting > --> Yak-List message posted by: Brian Lloyd <brian@lloyd.com> > > Doug Sapp wrote: > > > --> Yak-List message posted by: "Doug Sapp" <rvfltd@televar.com> > > > > Dennis and Mark, > > I have been watching this from a distance and would offer up my "10 cents > > worth" for your consideration. Looks pretty spiff, but wasn't able to make SNF to go see one... Wondering how readable it is in direct sunlight under our canopies... --> Yak-List message posted by: cjpilot710@aol.com When you talk to aircraft designers or system engineers about why this or that was done, you will get very reasonable explanations. These decisional designs are based a lot on; culture, history, and previous designs. I was one of the first crews to checkout out the triple 7 ("Big Foot" because she had 6 tires on the gear truck). Though the airplane was basically a fly-by-wire machine Boeing elected to put in normal yokes for the pilots. On one of my first flights, I got to talk to one of the engineers who designed the cockpit. They had the option of put in side controller handles but opt for the yoke because of they wanted it to 'interface' between the pilots (each other) and pilots and airplane/autopilot. IOW, the yoke would imitate what the autopilot was doing as well as the other pilot. All the French "Fifis" don't do that. I believe the CJ-6s design though an original design, shape wise, is Chinese, but when the system engineers got down to their part of the design, they stuck with stuff they knew would work and were familiar with. Why "reinvent the wheel" IOW? Plus it would be cheaper. System designs (electric, hydraulic, pneumatic) like airframe shapes, evolve with time. The Yak-50 (about the same vintage as the CJ-6) was an earlier design and had the emergency air bottle replenished though the normal system. The 52 you need to put air (presumably to use nitrogen) in direct. The 18T has a system like the 52 but is set up to 'unload' the compressor when the system is up to pressure. I believe these are simple system up grades, if you will. I ended up giving the unit away to my baby brother. The screen would washout in direct sun light in just a couple of minutes. I had bought it at OSH and used it on the way home. After a couple of other x-c I felt it just took up cockpit room. I do not know if the Lawrence 1000 has the same type of screen but they look the same. BTW they were selling for $799. at S&F and I have the brosure if you want it. --> Yak-List message posted by: "Terry Calloway" <TCalloway@datatechnique.com> FYI - My wife agree to back seat to Columbus, NB for the RPA Fred Ihlenburg Memorial Fly-in. So, if you were wondering if you should bring along your spouse, my wife says bring them along and they'll have a great time. Keith and Janice are great hosts for pilots and non-pilots alike. See you there, Pumper

--> Yak-List message posted by: <aapilot@adelphia.net> Folks, As we make improvements to the association, I will announce on the list. The RPA forums are now at their final location: www.rpatalk.com We are not moving away from matronics, it's a great tool, but your assoc forums allow graphically displayed individual forums and topics. Just bookmark www.rpatalk.com and when you login, just check "remember my login" and you will be auto-logged in (same goes for the associations site which now allows auto-log-in) The next event is ARS at Castle and it looks like we will break last years attendance record, hope to see there... Drew

They are close to Green Bay (MTW and OSH) - I will see if I can get them to come to MTW early in the week before OSH if folks are interested in their stuff - let me know. If you tell them Mark Schrick from RPA sent you, you get a 5% discount for all RPA members. Support them for they donated to the RPA ALL REDSTAR donation event.
