Folks,
The Forum platform, although linked from the RPA website as well as at www.rpatalk.com, is of course free & open to all folks, regardless of membership in the association.
With that, all pilots, RPA members or not, need only to make a free account (register
an ID and Password) by selecting "Create a new account" below the login
screen. Select "Auto Login" and when you revisit the forums, your already logged
in.
RPA members: Use your same Member ID and Password; one less thing to write down
or remember!
These are un-moderated forums, so this seperate login account is just to have the
capability to bounce outsiders from the community that attempt to hoaks such
discussion groups, as we've seen here in the past.
The forums allow members to see who's online, and if you fill out your profile,
folks can see whatever information you would like them to know about you (aircraft
flown, A&P experience, Guiness record holder for time spent eating at Hooters,
etc.)...
Now that I've said that, if you are an RPA member, create your forum account using
the same member ID and Password if you like, one less thing to forget. Deon
is going to make, in the near future, RPA membership registration auto register
you in the forums using your RPA ID/Password on record.
Hope this helps,
Drew

Folks,
I had some examples of official RedStar Pilots Association merchandise available
at Sun n Fun and I was glad to see it was welcomed like elk meat to a pack of
wolves. Deon the web manager and I are working on the final issues with the
RPA Online Store: It will open soon (announced here) and start with paypal, but
will very soon after include online secure credit card merchant services, just
as you see at say, Amazon.
Countless hours went in to art design and product development, funds generated
will grow the scope of your association (and provide operating capital to design
and order more products for the gang, it's a vicious cycle)some things you
will find:
Official RPA Hangar Flags: You've got your Chinese or CCCP flag hanging over the
warbird, some folks might think you've gone to the reds! Display the RPA flag;
the design includes a patriotic theme and is an eye catcher sure to spark conversations
from complete strangers...especially if you ask for the optional
"Non PC" version with Ivana, the RPAs' female Soviet airman mascot in CCCP uniform...
RPA Logo Stickers: Old squadron tradition, have a roll of these babies on hand
in the helmet bag and leave the RPA Shield at your favorite airport watering hole,
FBO, etc.
Patches on patches...RPA logo member, FAST, Aircraft specific, etc...
Flying scarves...
RPA Winged Name Tags (AF vets can select AF style wings, Navy vets gold navy style wings, civil background RPAers either one or send me your suggestion via "Ask & Answer" at www.rpatalk.com !)
RPA logo pitot covers unlike anything you've ever seen...
Hats, shirts, polos, aviator turtle necks...
Stay tuned...

Hi Mike
Couple further questions: What is your email? You can reply off list.
How many hours on engine?
I had similar problem, same symptons. Mine would drop during aeros
mainly, typically when negative.
2 things to check first: The regulator. Mine had built up a ridge of
metal on the cone. Changing this cured the problem. On the rhs, cut
the safety wire, and remove the entire regulator assembly. (Cap,
spring, piston, adjustor). If worn, replace or presumably one may get
it re-machined to spec.
Other item to check is the oil tank, that there is no foreign object
inside (the famous, poorly designed engen oil cap where the plastic ring
falls into the tank). You can drain then remove the big cover on the
front and stick your hand in. I flushed mine out with avgas.
There is also possibility that the rotating, multi jointed oil pick up
is snagging, either due to crap in the tank or because the tank is
dented. But I would check the regulator first, esp. because you dropped
pressure during taxi the one time.
Prop rpm being constant is misleading, there is separate pump supplying
higher pressure oil to the governor.

--> Yak-List message posted by:
Hi all
I'm looking for some advice on an oil pressure problem
on my Yak-52.
Shortly after I got the aircraft last year, I had an
incident where the oil pressure dropped during flight.
I was fairly close to my home base, so I returned
there as quickly as possible. The oil level was about
9 litres. I filled up to 12 litres, and the oil
pressure seemed fine.
On a few subsequent flights the oil pressure has
dropped for a few minutes, and then returned to
normal.
Last week I was out practicing some aeros. The oil
pressure was normal at start, and remained in the 4-5
kg/sq cm range until the end of the sortie. My last
exercise was a one-turn spin. After recovery, the oil
pressure had dropped right down to about 1 kg/sq cm. I
check the pressure and temp prior to the start of each sequence, so this
was a sudden drop during the exercise. I returned to the field
immeditaely. Oil level was 9 litres.
This morning I refilled to 12 litres. At startup the
oil pressure was fine, going up to 5 kg/sq cm.
However, as the engine warmed the oil pressure
dropped. By the time I was at holding point, it had
dropped to zero. I taxied back, and the oil pressure
climbed back to 3 kg/sq cm drung taxi. I shut down,
and checked oil level. The level was still at 12
litres. The only odd thing was that the oil appeared
to have some form of froth / bubbles, visible on the
dipstick.
In the in-flight incidents the prop RPM has remained
constant, and the oil temp has remained constant.
From what I can make out, it appears that this could
be due to the vent pipe clogging. Does anyone have any suggestions of
other potential problems?
If it is the vent pipe, what is the easiest way to
clean the pipe?

The same will happen there. User/password is no deterrent for trolls. Matt has
the same thing based on email address and the trolls still got in. At least
he eyeballs each sign-up.
I'm fairly busy. This forum is delivered to me and automatically filed in my yak-list
folder. I can ask a question and get an answer. Sometimes it will be
the right answer and it will usually spawn a heated discussion accompanied by
name calling. I can be entertained by numerous friends, acquaintances, and adversaries
without having to do anything. I can see what the other guys are doing
in their necks of the woods. Having to go to a different site to actively
seek that forum is a step I don't want to bother with. I am probably going
to miss out on tons of really cool stuff but that's life. So, no, it doesn't
strike me as being much of an advantage.
OTOH, I think it would be a great thing for RPA to financially support Matronics
using a bit of my membership dosh given how much value I (and others) have gotten
from this well-established forum.

Craig,
Thanks for the photos.
I've long thought the CJ cowling is a ripe area for cleanup. I've thought
of moving the lower attachment points up on the firewall and then
re-contouring the lower and aft portion of the cowl to make it fair more
closely to the fuse sides and bottom. Might help with low head and oil
temps, too. A large spinner and nose case fairing should help smooth and
reduce inlet airflow, a la Rare Bear.
I've also heard reports that removing the inlet vanes increases speed by as
much as 15-20kph but at the cost of VERY low temps. See re-contouring above
for better temps.
You may have seen pics of an exhaust system (I think it may have been on
Mike Filucci's airplane) that exited the sides of the cowling. Said to be
very noisy. Something similar (tho probably not multi-pipes) exiting the
side or bottom, along with some heat shielding, in conjunction with
augmenter tubes and a close fitting cowling/fuse junction could result in
further cleanup of the lower and aft cowling areas and help control temps.
Don't really want to get into cowl exhaust flaps, but they are an obvious
way to help cleanup airflow and control temps.
For a while Fred Ihlenburg was advertising a nose gear/fairing mod that was
supposed to entirely enclose the nosewheel in the fuselage, but I've never
seen one or even pics.
I assume you also carefully fit and seal all fairings, likewise the canopy
and install gap seals where feasible? Us glider types are used to taping
every nook, joint and cranny in the endless pursuit of L/G.
Which reminds me--ever see any photos of AJ Smith's airplane? He took all
kinds of races several years ago with incredible speeds on low horsepower
and fixed gear, but I only ever saw one photo of his airplane and about all
it showed was that it had a T-tail and bubble canopy. Another fellow (whose
name escapes me--might have been Mike _____) built a little fixed gear
airplane with a tiny engine (about 65hp--Rotax?--and under a round cowling
as I recall) that got some incredible speeds (200mph?) by simply paying
close attention to the details.
Cheers and congrats,
Jerry Painter

Brian,
I know this guy from Nigeria who needs to keep his $25
million safe. I'm sure you have safe bank accounts down
there in the Carib, so for a slight finders fee I'll have
him transfer the money in your account and you can keep the
interest. Just send me your account number/routing code and
everyone will be happy....

First of all the forum is not there to replace this list, but rather for
ongoing discussions on topics such as FAST or regional issues, etc.
On Trolls: Actually the difference is just that - on an email list you
just have to register with any email address and you can post. On a
forum you have to give a valid email address to receive your password -
at this point the system notifies me and I have to give permission
before the guy can post. Even if he uses random hotmail accounts it is
very easy to have software pick out these attempts.
Also the Forum can email you when your discussion topic got a new post.
Deon.

Yaksters;
N9110M LIVES!
One short month after my gear up mishap I'm back in the air.
Funny thing, I keep getting comments from my local hanger group
like..... "Geeze your lucky". Or...... "If it would have been a spam can
you'd be parting it out".
HMMMM? Maybe those Russkies designed em' right!
OHH, by-the-way, after a year of flying with me, a good friend (who
reads this list), went out and bought a 52 for himself. I guess that
there's nothing like first hand experience to make believers out of
people.
See you at Red Stars.
Frank
