Our Sun n Fun get together was NOT advertised as a FAST
clinic due to the training required for flying in the show.
Neither will MTW/Oshkosh be a "clinic" for the same reason.
Here in the SouthEast Region we have already run a full FAST
clinic and 2 mini-clinics, this year alone.

Why take a champion wrestler (YAK-52) and try to turn him into a flimsy
long distance runner (CJ6)? Unless of course you want to run from a
fight! :)

'Changers & Yakker's,
Once again the official results of the Sun 60 have been revised. As
first published, my speed was recorded as over 253 KNOTS. I expressed a
wee bit of doubt, and showed the Aircraft Spruce guy how my speed was
posted higher than everyone else's yet my elapsed time fell in place
with the others. "Computers don't lie" was the comment. My reply was
"true, but programmers screw up".
Round 2: They published 185.6 KNOTS in the Sun n Fun TODAY paper, which
was still a little funny since there was a standing start and I held 180
KIAS all the way around at a density altitude of 1500 ft.
Round 3: Somehow, another 3 miles got added to the distance
for a total of 63 statute miles, probably due to the course being run in
the opposite direction and my average recalc'ed at 169.315 KNOTS, or 195
MPH, or 313.57 KPH. Darn, I really wanted to average 200+ mph around the
course.
Maybe there's hope for you guys yet.
Question: What is the Yak-52 capable of on the top end? Is
it possible to put some more waddle in her walk? George Coy tells me
that that big fat Clark Y wing would make it tough to squeeze more knots
out, let alone the dirty feet and bridge rivets? Opinions?

On www.flyredstar.org under "Events" you will find a list of all
registered events and there descriptions for a quick reference. This is
for everybody not only members. Members has an "Event Attendants"
section where you can see who is coming, etc.
For the guys at the Sun&Fun event - I uploaded more photos under "Event
debriefing"
Thanks,

OK. This list is where I thought I could get the information. If it was posted,
I missed it. I'll add the RPA site to my favorites.
But I was thinking there would be more traffic(messages) on clinics on this list
leading up to the event. As I scanned them, I didn't see any that were close
to the event.
So maybe that's where more emphasis is needed. Clinics the month of or prior to
a major event with an associated amount of messages to announce them. Since
there will be no RPA clinics at OSH, maybe you could turn such an effort prior
to OSH into a nation wide membership drive as well.

one per recorded victory :)))))))
No need to make any 52 ones because nobody will ever have a need to buy one

Gents,
I noticed some advisory commentary regarding my Prop for sale. Maybe
this will help.
The Propellor Log states that it is an MTV-3-B-C/L250-21 Hub Serial
#96005, With Blade set #'s
MI-6431, MI-6432, MI-6433
I chatted with Doug Sapp not two hours after I made the initial post
and advised him about the following, as Doug often tells others about
deals I told him that I would be sure to advise any potential purchaser
of a hub AD:
In an enquiry with MT propellor in Germany I had about a month ago,
they advised me of an AD on the prop. They also informed me that if I
didn't want to hassle with 50 hour inspections I could buy a new hub
assy for $1,400 US.
I asked Doug if he felt I was asking a fair price considering this, He
agreed.
$5,000 USD firm,
FOB my hangar at FFZ (Mesa, AZ), the propellor is crated but I will
need the crate back as it ain't mine.

Mike,
The best way for you to get involved in FAST training is to get in touch with
your regional coordinator. All the FAST training is being coordinated at the
regional level now. We found that when we tried to accomplish both FAST
training and mass formation training at S&F and OSH we could not do so without
compromising both. As a result, S&F and OSH will be devoted to mass formation and,
as I said, FAST training will be handled on the local level. So far, the
effort has proven to be successful and beneficial to RPA members. Local training
means you don't have to travel so far to get training. It also usually means
that there is a good ratio of instructors to students. So far this year, it has
also meant more opportunities for training. As Craig Payne pointed out, there
have been three trainings in the SE region with more planned. In the NE, there
have been two mini-clinics with more planned. From what I have seen this year
there is no lack of interest or lack of enthusiasm. We have already trained an
d qualified a number of FAST pilots with many more in the pipeline. There is
one more element to the whole scenario we all need to appreciate as well -- all
this effort is being done by volunteers who invest their time, and sometimes
money, to make it happen. The RPA is not some corporation with a full time,
paid staff to handle organizing events. You are right about the need for a
proactive approach, but it is you and all the other members who need to be
proactive if you want your Association to work for you.
Regards,
Mike Filucci

-Your Guide to Flying into All Red Star
===============================================
DON'T LOOSE OUT ON THE DISCOUNT!!!
Looks like another record year in store for all of us at All Red Star.
As of today we have well over 60 registrations, which is not only ahead
of last year's pace, it is the most ever! That being said there are a
number of you who have registered but not paid. The 10% discount on
registration ends on April 30, that's just 2 days away. If you have
not paid, please take the time to do so now at:
http://www.flyredstar.org/ARSregisterPayment.aspx
Thanks!
You may have noticed that the ARS site is now being supported by
flyredstar.org. A big thank you to the very talented Deon Esterhuizen
for his work on integrating the sites. Very soon you will be able to
see a list of all attendees and the aircraft they are bringing online.
We will let you know when this happens.
-----------------------------
FORGET THE YAK GROUPIES, WE HAVE NATASHA!
In our never ending quest to keep the ground ops just as fun as the air
ops, All Red Star 2004 will be the backdrop for the introduction of the
event's newest supporter, Natasha. Natasha is a long time enthusiast
of Red Star aircraft and she will be on hand to put our aircraft in a
never before seen light. Even if your team is knocked out of the Crud
Tournament in the first round, I can assure you Natasha will quickly
have you leaving your troubles behind, and if the price is right, you
just might be able to take her home with you!
-----------------------------
WORLD CLASS AEROBATIC/SPIN INSTRUCTION ON TAP
Oleg Fedorov, who placed 3rd in the 2000 WAC, and who has several
thousand hours in Yak-52's will be at All Red Star 2004 for your
training pleasure. Also known as the "Spin Master", we are excited to
provide this incredible training opportunity. Aerobatic/Spin training
is an essential part of our type of flying, so wether you want to work
on some aerobatic maneuvers that have been giving you fits, or want to
get comfortable with spin recovery techniques that can save your life
and *will* build your confidence/enjoyment in flying your mount.
Space is filling up fast, so if you are interested, please let us know.
Costs are TBD based on his travel costs, but the more people that fly
with him the cheaper it will be as the costs will be directly spread
over the participants. This is an incredible training opportunity and
sure to be pennies on the dollar for what you would pay elsewhere.
-----------
ALL RED STAR TO UNVEIL NEW MUNITIONS DURING SATURDAY COMPETITIONS
After months of research and testing, the doll penetrating BGBU-69
"Breast Buster" will debut at this year's Bomb Drop competition on
Saturday, May 15. The Bomb Drop competition is open to all pilots and
we are assured this year the bombs are reliable and visible from
release to impact for accurate scoring. We also are confident they
will blow up, so to speak. Rules will be posted soon on the web site.
After all the bombs have fallen on Saturday morning, it will be time to
strut your formation skills during the 2nd Annual Formation Challenge.
This year the stakes have been raised considerably with the winning
team not only taking home a gorgeous trophy (below) but also flight
jackets valued at over $150/ea. Registration is $100 per team (open to
both jets and props) and there are only a few slots left to sign up.
If you are interested, please contact us ASAP. Rules will be posted
soon.
(The Russian Roulette Squadron with their 1st Annual Formation
Challenge Champions trophy).
DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT
Flying into All Red Star can be challenging at times. With formation
and ACM flights buzzing about the surrounding airspace it can get
hectic, especially if you don't know where to look and where to be.
We hopefully have taken most of the confusion out of your arrival (and
event flying) with the Air-ground plan. Please visit
www.allredstar.com/faq2004.asp and click on the "Flying into KMER"
link. Also, most all of your questions about the event including
participant requirements and other vital information can be found on
this page.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
That's it for now. Again, if you have not registered or paid yet, now
is the time as fees will go up by 10% on May 1st. This is shaping up
to be the best ARS yet, and we hope you'll be a part of it!

Well, after an 8 month stint on the ground, NX218CJ took to the skies
at 0722 this morning for only her 4th flight. We had been battling
issues with my gee-whiz-bang systems monitor that was giving us fits,
and my lack of time to spend at the airport, but things appeared to all
be straightened out. After a ground run and systems check yesterday
afternoon, I wiped her down, filled her with oil, did a FOD check and
put her to bed.
Rolled her out of the hanger this morning to the rising sun,
preflighted, pulled the prop through and she fired right up, it was as
if she knew we were finally going to get air under her wings again.
Flight was completely uneventful, and it was the first time I had put
her through all the aerobatic maneuvers. The plane handled
wonderfully. The MTV-9-260 was powerful and smooth...I can't believe
what a difference it is over the 2-blade, and holy cow, what a speed
break too!
There is still much detail work to do to get "Panda-monuim" where I
want her, but all I can say is it's waaaay better to work on a flying
airplane! This plane is full of modifications, and at this point I'm
only disappointed with our design of one....the map box where the hand
pump used to be....we should have fastened it with screws instead of
rivets. Oh well, live and learn.
As you can imagine, I'm quite busy with All Red Star planning, etc.,
but sometime after the event I'll take pics of all the mods and put
them on photoshare. Just as a teaser, some of my favorites are the
Malcom hood, electric boost pump/primer, and 3-way electric trim.
So it looks like Panda-monium will be at All Red Star, finally. That
is, if I don't have my L-39 type rating by then.....
Cheers,
Barry

Barry,
In regards to the rules for attending All Red Stars, what is the
following rule supposed to do and how does it affect me practically? I
have only one panel mount radio in the front. Here's the
rule..................
"the backseater must be able to talk outside the aircraft independent of
your actions"
Also, I provide for my own insurance. Why would your organization have a
problem with that?
