Changers, Yakkers, Dolphiners and the rest,
I came back from a Caribbean trip with the company (ohh, Red Stripe, my enemy!)
to read some of the posts,
Take a moment, without quick judgment, to this post:
Here is Michaels reply:
"OK. This list is where I thought I could get the information. If it was posted,I
missed it. I'll add the RPA site to my favorites.
But I was thinking there would be more traffic(messages) on clinics on this list
leading up to the event. As I scanned them, I didn't see any that were close
to the event."
Folks, outside of the events section of the RPA site, which is an outstanding tool
for the organizer as well as the attendee, the RPA forums are not meant to
fragment anything; his post is exactly why we searched other major associations
for communication tools, from Southern California Paintball assoc to the CJAA.
I recieved several e-mails and phone calls about "where's the event", the
matronics lists are excellent near real time communication tools, but for anyone
who looks at this post, and these forums we've mentioned, they are simply a
format for certain discussions that resist the loss of information through the
mixing of discussions and more importantly, the preservation of the discussions
on the parent server in a format that is easily viewed/retrieved at any time.
I use the yak list, I promote the yak list, but if I were organizing an event,
I would now post the details in teh event forum to insure that post will
remain easily viewed and retreivable at any time. T
hese forums also attempt to bring together diverse groups, from jet operators
to international members, and presents independant topics compartmentalized for
discussion and education. We did not expect these forums to take off over night,
they are there for you, the community as needed - I strongly suggest the
regional coordinators and event organizers post their event information there.
But ease of use of the matronics lists makes it a near real time discussion;
I'm sure they will be around for a long time.
Also on the pilot from South Africa; we have members from some 7 countries, the
event generation tools and all the downloadable information (adding more as we
get it) is open to all world wide,
Drew

Sooo, I gather from the responses that no one is either
interested in improving the cruise performance of the
Yak-52, or feels it is not worth doing. More fuel capacity
solves most X-country issues I guess. Just keep checking
your 6 for overtaking C-172's.

Drew,
I've been pointing my CJAA buds at the RPA site, for All Red Star, but when
You get there, you cant find any info, except a registration page. I've
searched high and low, for a description of the event. If you click on
events, you see a list of events and if you click on more info you dont get
any. Finally I searched for allredstar on google and found your page. But
even there, I couldnt get pricing information.
Also one of the event calendars had May 5th posted as the date, I was about
to register to go.

Well Craig, it could be too expensive to get a significant cruise speed
increase ... that big flat radial has to be a big drag item, overwhelming
the other bumps that protrude from the a/c. So other than putting a 450HP
engine in it and doing a cowling redesign, I doubt there is much that can
be done.
Does anybody in the group know of an aeronautical engineer that would be
willing to make a guess as to the relationship of horsepower and cruise
speed for a YAK-52 shaped a/c? Something like V = C x SQRT[V] x HP ?
Maybe we could extrapolate from our power/cruise relationships .... we know
the Vne of the a/c and we know what power produces what cruise speeds ...
so we could estimate how much HP it would take to bring the cruise speed up
to, say, Va or crank it up to Vne.

Several years ago I downloaded a great annual check list for my YAK 52. I am in
SC doing an annual on 22154 and I left my YAK stuff in Tennessee. Help me out
and someone send me the link or email me a Word doc of one you are using.
I just like a neat check list to put in my binder.
Question: My oil temps during acro are right at the top of the red but cylinder
head temp is mid range. Once the oil becomes that hot there seems to be little
I can do to reduce it. (60%...more air flow...cooler always open) Of course
when the oil is this hot when I reduce RPM's oil pressure is off the scale.
I have been running Aeroshell 80W and I am putting 100W in today. All screens
are clean and show no metal. Ambient is about 80 F on the ground. Good oil
pressure and temperature on cross countries.
Thanks

OK, two things. First, you are right about the Target-6's and the
Target-34's, come to All Red Star for a graphic illustration
(literally). Second, to classify the CJ with the Targets in ACM
capability is sorely misguided...I'm still picking round head rivets
out of my teeth from the last engagement I had with a -52. :)
Perhaps C.Payne is on to something...the -52 suffers from copious E
bleeding and when you are in an E fight, that tends to be a handicap.
Now I have been bagged by a -52, in the hands of a current USMC
Aggressor pilot...but that's like shooting fish in a barrel! In even
hands, the CJ *should* come out on top. That being said, we are
holding Phase Two of our ACM program this fall in California where
we'll learn all about dissimilar 1 v. 1 and 2 v. 1 (for those ready).
Y'all should put it on your list, as you simply cannot have more fun in
a tandem seat aircraft...
Cheers,

Hi Frank,
I'm glad you bring these points up, as I'm sure there are others out
there with the same questions.
I refer you the FAQ on our web, and also the RPA formation page where
there are detailed explanations. However, I will briefly answer
here....

If you are in a flight and your IP needs to either talk to another IP,
or otherwise broadcast to the outside world as situation dictates, he
needs to be able to push a button and talk at his own discretion
without having to rely on anyone/anything else to accomplish this.
This is a SAFETY imperative, no exceptions. This does not mean,
however, that you have to have a separate radio in the back seat, just
a PTT that is connected to the radio.

All Red Star and the RPA follow the same insurance guidelines as every
single other warbird organization. We do not begrudge anyone providing
their own insurance. However, at events where someone's actions can
result in significant (read more than your own) property/personal
damage it is the fiduciary responsibility of the organizations putting
on events to ensure that everyone is covered in the event of an
accident. Frankly, as a responsible member of the community it is also
the fiduciary responsibility of everyone attending these events to
provide the same thing. We are all in this together....
Hope this helps. For further information, visit

Question: I've taken a couple of training flights in Joe Wilkins -52
doing Formation with the Colorado Yak Pack. (Scares me and Unlimited
Akro doesn't scare me) Will you guys ever allow (any reason to or nor

Barry,
In regards to the rules for attending All Red Stars, what is the
following rule supposed to do and how does it affect me practically? I
have only one panel mount radio in the front. Here's the
rule..................
"the backseater must be able to talk outside the aircraft independent

your actions"
Also, I provide for my own insurance. Why would your organization have
a
problem with that?

Betty has that. The empenage has a lightweight wood floor from right behind the
rear seat back almost to the base of the vertical stab. I had way more luggage
space than my Comanche. Ask Dave Laird about the baggage compartment in Betty.
After you pull out all the old radio crap and then move the battery farther
aft atop the old ADF antenna location you will be amazed at the useful space.
I could carry a couple of cases of oil, two sleeping bags, my survival kit,
a rifle, a couple two or three large duffles, my laptop computer backpack,
lots of fiddly little bits stuffed into nooks and crannies, etc. My O2 and scuba
bottles were back there too.

Well, mine had music input to a stereo intercom. I used a small minidisc player
to provide tunez. Now I use an Apple iPod and can go all the way across country
and never hear a repeat.

Ah, the holy grail. You just threw that in there to ensure that you had at least
one impossible request.

Actually that isn't all that hard. Grounds disposal is the real bug-a-boo. You
can just shake them over the side but they leave a streaky mess down the side
of the aircraft that can be mistaken for tobacco juice.

Silly, that is already commonly available. It is called the M-14P mod.

The formula for parasitic drag is the same for all aircraft. Only the coefficient
of drag changes from aircraft to aircraft.

Yes, that would give you data points to which you can fit the curve and deduce
Cd. You can also get the curve by measuring the RoC at different airspeeds.
RoC comes from excess power. OTOH, if you know top speed with one engine and
prop combination you can pretty much figure out what will happen with a bigger
engine.

Vne doesn't enter into it really.

You can but you probably don't have that much power on tap. BTW airspeed is proportional
to the cube root of HP. Wanna go twice as fast? You need 8x the HP.
HP is *NOT* the way to go faster. But it will sure make you climb like a
bat out of hell!

Yea Rick,
I must admit Craig a few extra knots would be nice. Dennis was doing some
work on some Yak speed mods but I will let him tell you what they might me
as I don't want to give his game away.

Speed phooey. It's all about Vertical Penetration. Yak-52's rule - CJ
drivers drool.

The formula for parasitic drag is the same for all aircraft. Only the
coefficient of drag changes from aircraft to aircraft.
> Maybe we could extrapolate from our power/cruise relationships
Yes, that would give you data points to which you can fit the curve and
deduce Cd. You can also get the curve by measuring the RoC at different
airspeeds. RoC comes from excess power. OTOH, if you know top speed
with one engine and prop combination you can pretty much figure out what
will happen with a bigger engine.

Vne doesn't enter into it really.

You can but you probably don't have that much power on tap. BTW
airspeed is proportional to the cube root of HP. Wanna go twice as
fast? You need 8x the HP. HP is *NOT* the way to go faster. But it
will sure make you climb like a bat out of hell!

Hi Barry. Glad to hear you are happy with the mods to your CJ. Are you able to
quantify the performance increase with the new MT Prop fitted? Also, does anyone
have any insights into the MT vs Whirlwind?
Rgds. Egon.

Fellow Yakers and ACM'ers,
ACM Round TWO will be in California (Airport to be determined, could be Q99
South County Airport near San Jose, Ca) the first weekend of October.
(October 1,2,3 2004)
Should have a really good turn out for this one. The last one was great held
at Q99 South County with a new facility for class room study and great
dinners at Keith Frost's house each night (Steak and wine)and built in
Yak/CJ maintience facility on site to keep everyone air born during the
joist fest.
Hope to see more CJ6's and Yak's from Arizona and Nevada. Good time for all.

I went to a funeral yesterday. Paul had been in the 101st Airborne and had
made 2 combat jumps. The last one into Holland during the "Market Garden"
operation. He was wounded and spent the rest of the war a POW. Getting out he
went to work as an aircraft mechanic at Eastern Airlines until he retired. He
was a tough guy with deep set eyes, and a chin that stuck out even with his
nose. An avid hunter and golfer with a very low handy cap. He was a straight
out, no nonsense person. I use to marvel at his stories of his life back when,
that he told only in a way that you know it was no BS. Told in a way not that
wasn't his personal glorification, just the way it happened.
As we stood by the flag draped casket at Florida's vast National Cemetery, I
noted the old trooper honor guard, rifles at parade rest, each with either
101st or 82nd airborne patches and jump wings on their jackets. Each wore Purple
Hearts. At the signal up came the rifles and 3 volleys fired, than taps
played. The flag was removed, folded, and presented to his only living relative,
his son.
It was a beautiful day, CAVU, F 75, with just a very light breeze. As we
started back to the cars, from a far off knoll, I heard once again 3 volleys
fired and the distant taps played. Another veteran was being laid to rest. I
watched some of the younger folks in the family suddenly look around in the
realization that something was happening right before their eyes. A whole
generation of heroes were disappearing. One veteran at a time, one thousand fire
hundred times a day.
After I had closed the car door, my nice and I sat for a few moments and just
looked at the low green hill side (yes there are hills in Florida) where
Paul's head stone would and where her father's (once a Marine) now stood. We both
remarked that it was a beautiful place. Its neat white head stones only
different by name and dates. Roll after roll of them.
Soon we heard another volley fired and again taps.
