You've been a very naughty boy! I have it on good authority that those
weren't round head rivets you were spittin' out during that Air Combat
Maneuver you did against the 52. I heard it was bits of teeth from
gritting too hard trying to loose the one on your tail :)

On the question of single seaters in FAST Formation:
Yes you can train and gain your FAST qual in a single seater, although this subject
is addressed in the FAST FF&P/PTS, we have enhanced the policy and provided
it for download/viewing on the RPA website:
Select 'Operations' - then select 'Formation', you will see a list of documents
for download or online viewing.
This subject is addresed in the RPA FAST Wing/Lead Training and Policy Letters
posted for download here.
The short answer is of course yes you can participate with your Yak 55 with like
performing aircraft. You must show basic proficiency / safe solo formation
skills in a two seat aircraft prior to participation with your single seater in
training. The checkride can be completed in a single seater as long as you
can provide evidence of having met this standard and are recommended for the evaluation.
Again, there is a lot of excellent information in this and other subjects, from
why we require parachutes to what you need, and do not need, to gain your wingmans
patch; all in the Wing/Lead Training Documents on the RPA site.
Hope this helps!

Good idea Terry. Selma has an 8000' x 200' runway and a tarmac as big as
the state of Rhode Island for parking airplanes.

Ernie,
You're messing up the system with these requests. The way it is supposed to
work is the designer/salesman CREATES hysteria and thus the need for his
newest product.
By an amazing coincidence I am in the final stages of development on a
pneumatic foot massager to solve the extremely serious problem of CJ crashes
due to numb feet that has taken on plague-like proportions in South
South-Eastern Australia. Measurments by the South South-Eastern Aussie
Aviation Pedologists Association (SSEAAPA) have established the deleterious
effects of radial engines on foot health. The SSEAAPA highly recommends
each CJ pilot have a certified pedoseismologist measure the foot vibrations
on his plane and then buy my massage system.
More details later.

Gang,
First on All Red Star and the link on the RPA site. We're getting that
taken care of. In the mean time, just go to www.allredstar.com
directly.
A bunch of "candy" on the list digest this morning. I have thoughts on
several (here's your chance to hit the 'delete' key!).
1) yak-list v. RPA online forums. The both serve there purpose. The
forums are nice in that they keep the discussion threads clear/coherent
for long periods of time, and it's easy to pick out topics. They are
additionally useful to quickly locate posted information that is more
than a few days old. Yeah, sure, you can argue that the same thing can
be done on matrionics.com, but look at the CJAA BB. I find that very
useful to chase down different topics. Yak-list is great, but there
are members of the association that don't do the yak-list and vice
versa. I don't think it is "fragmenting" the group, just providing an
additional useful service. If you don't like it, that's fine, don't
use it. But please quit with all the detractions of the RPA
forums....people have put a ton of work and time into providing what is
the best association website around.
2) Ernie, you want a cuppacino maker? I believe they are standard
equipment on G-V's.
3) Vertical penetration. Hmm...tempting, but I'll stay on track here.
That would be an interesting comparison. -52 has higher Vne but also
much higher drag. I'm betting that the CJ, especially with big motor
and many blades prop would make it interesting. That would be a fun
comparison test...maybe we'll try to fit a side-by-side-by-side-by-side
comparison run at ARS...
4) Yak-55's in formation. The dream of the organizers at ARS is to
have EVERY prop airframe type in a single formation. Let's see, that's
one each of Yak-3/9,11,18,50,52,54,55, CJ-5, CJ-6,IAR 823, Sukhoi, I-3.
Last year we could have pulled off 10 of the 12 airplanes. I think
we'll get Eric Beard to come to our event next year, which takes care
of the -54. And Eddie Andreini will be there with his Yak-9's. That
will be a goal for next year's event...
5) Quantifying the performance increase of the MT on Panda-monium,
sure. Bitchin' dude! :)
It's really hard to say at this point, other than it has way more
static thrust than the 2-blade, is smoother in cruise, and seems to net
higher speeds. There is no way for *me* to truly evaluate it though as
I'm flying the different setup on different airplanes. Panda is very
light, and is rigged better. The real benefit of the 3-blade though,
is low end thrust, that's why I bought it. Whirlwind v. MT. Hal
Morely can comment on that....
6) ACM on the East Coast. My tongue-in-cheek comment about -52's v.
CJ's aside yesterday, a standardized ACM format is under development
for the whole association. This is of utmost importance.
Guys, ACM is dangerous. Over the past couple of years we have
assembled what is most certainly the world's best core of ACM
instructors and consultants in the civilian world. To do this right in
our airplanes we have had to adapt a lot of stuff from the military
training world...and our IP's and consultants have done a wonderful
job. That being said, we need to make sure that this is what we all
use when it comes to official events. By the end of this year we
should have enough of the kinks worked out and enough real world
experience with the program to provide it for association wide use.
The good news is there are qualified/interested folks popping up all
over the country and the RPA should be able to host these type of
events on a region by region basis soon. However, let's not try to
shortcut the process or cheat the development of literally years of
work in order to have a couple days of fun. One screw up by any one of
us, and organized ACM is gone for all of us. I think there is big
potential for ACM down the road, but there is also big potential for
disaster if a standardized and proven approach isn't taken.
7) Man, less than two weeks to ARS....

I agree and disagree. First, I applaud anyone who is volunteering their
time and effort to help make this association better. We have great people
here, need to keep them and attract more. We have dedicated people that are
putting effort into many places of the organization and we need even more
people to work other support efforts.
However, I was under the impression that the BBS/forum/email list/matronics
discussion had be gone through and it was clear back then that folks didn't
see the need for a different forum. Sure, we can individually decide not to
use it, but that is NOT the point. We should continue to have members
provide the recommendations AND detractions of all aspects of the RPA from
the forms to FAST clinics, to how often we change the secret handshake so
Brian doesn't learn it. To paraphrase our founding fathers; "it is not only
our right to question the leadership of RPA, it is our RESPONSIBILITY."
Every member has the responsibility to help the leadership improve our
organization.
The RPA is here to serve its members. Doing so means listening to their
requests, assessing the needs, making recommendations to the members, and
then letting the members decide action and priorities. It would be
inappropriate to listen to 50 members asking for a cappocino delivery button
to be placed on the website, when the other 250 members of the organization
want Cafe Moca buttons. It is inappropriate to have resources engaged where
a large portion of the membership doesn't want something. RPA is NOT in the
business of "build it and they will come."
So, to the members; keep commenting on what you want, what you don't want,
and what the priorities should be. Your leadership should continue to build
their skills in listening to the membership and taking the organization
where the membership wants to go.
Note: this is my personal opinion, not necessarily the opinion of anyone
else. Your mileage may vary, weight, before cooking, void where prohibited,
past performance doesn't indcate future potential, ...

A personal perpective. I use both this list and the CJAA board (the new one)
and everyones bitchin about it. I'm trying to convince everyone to use the
matronic list. You have to GO to a board. This is just so much simpler.
Just my personal take.

Good idea. The Rat Pack at Moontown 3M5, is up near Hunstville, AL and they have
4 or 5 Yaks and CJs plus the ones we've got over in the Atlanta area. There's
4 or 5 in SC and a bunch in FL that could come up. Late October is probably
the best time from a weather standpoint as its usually dry and cool, but not
cold yet.

Sukhoi pilot Ian groom died today while practicing for this weekend. The
article is in the Miami Herald I have included the link below. If you
Florida guys want to do a meaningful formation I suggest that you contact
his family and offer your services.
