Hi there all
We have a problem with one of the Yak 52s that is owned by one of our friends......
The aircraft in question has a repetitive problem the voltmeter blowing out.......
Where does one start to effect repair that will stop this..
IS there an underlying condition that need to be remedied
Many thanks

You may want to make sure the overvoltage protection circuit behind the
instrument panel in the front cockpit isn't tripping. The reset button is
on top of it. Depending on model year, it can have either a button sticking
up or a rubber boot covering the reset button. You also may want to put a
DVM on the 28V switched buss just inside the inspection panel on the right
side and read the voltage during engine operation.
Good luck.

Hi folks.... has anyone out there got any good tips and advice on replacing the
trim cable? Our one is about to turn into a rats nest as a couple of strands
have broken.
I remember that when we assembled the aircraft it was quite a mission to get it
set up correctly, so I am not exactly looking forward to the job!
The damage has occurred in the vicinity of the aft trim wheel. I have not yet had
a look to see what is causing the problem - anyone had a similar problem -
any fixes would be greatly appreciated!

When my cable went bad I tried to change it myself. It is a bitch of a job
and I finally decided to get it done professionally. Steve Penning of
Aerocrafters in Santa Rosa, CA ( a member) did a great job for me. I
suggest you contact him for hints, but I believe that it is more than a one
man job. His Phone No. is 707 527-8480.

Usually at the aft trim rollers, the U shaped bracket/cover over the rollers
that is suppose to prevent the cable from displacing from the roller, is
loose and thus moves forward or aft causing it to physically come in contact
with the cables. So when you move the trim wheel, the cable is rubbing on
the U shaped bracket/cover. Check the security of BOTH the cover and the
two screws that hold the roller bracket to the frame. I've seen the roller
bracket mounting screws come loose too.
There is one other place to inspect (all should be carefully examined during
the condition inspection). Follow the trim cable forward from the trim
roller. At the point where the vertical stab is bolted to the fuselage just
to the rear of the bulkhead where the trim cable goes through, the nut and
cotter pin holding the vertical stab may not be the proper length and
protrude directly into the movement path of the trim cable.

Jay,
I think I misinterpreted your email. Thus the response I sent. I read
"aft trim wheel" as the rollers at the aft end of the fuselage under the
fairing. Sorry for that. You may have a trim cable outside of the two
guide rollers just behind the cross brace behind the rear seat.

I had the same problem with my trim cable. I tried to replace it but
concur with the other post that said it's a bitch of a job. I finally
broke down and bought a MAC servo. To me it seemed easier to install the
MAC servo in the elevator and to install all the wires and switches than
it was to try and deal with the cable. Everyone who flys the plane
really likes the electric trim.

I am in the process of trying to put together a clinic to help fellow
Red Star members get their Commercial. I'd like to know how much
interest there would be...
I have had at least 3 people ask about getting their commercial tickets
in the last six months. (To take advantage of the good deals we
sometimes get at airshows, of course you need a commercial ticket....the
free gas, smoke oil, rooms, even a free hamburger are considered
"compensation" by the FAA. I would be very nervous showing up at one of
these events without a commercial ticket...)
Here's the plan: show up with your written passed and requirements met,
we spend a day doing ground school prep, oral prep, discussing
amneuvers, etc... then spend a solid two days flying to get ready for
the check, last day would be the checkride. In a long weekend, you'd be
complete. We would cater this just for our group, and pair you with a
CFI familiar with your aircraft. I already have 4 CFI's and an examiner
lined up.
Could you do this at your home airport? Sure...but getting a CFI
familiar with or willing to fly in your Yak, and finding a Yak friendly
Designee might be a challenge.
If this sounds interesting to you, drop me an e-mail. I am thinking
about setting this up for August timeframe in Memphis, TN.

I need to modify a trailer to pickup a CJ-6 project and bring it home. Can someone
please tell me the width of the gear; both center-to-center of the tires
and the space between the innermost parts?
Thanks.

Hi folks.... has anyone out there got any good tips and advice on replacing
the trim cable? Our one is about to turn into a rats nest as a couple of
strands have broken.
I remember that when we assembled the aircraft it was quite a mission to get
it set up correctly, so I am not exactly looking forward to the job!
The damage has occurred in the vicinity of the aft trim wheel. I have not
yet had a look to see what is causing the problem - anyone had a similar
problem - any fixes would be greatly appreciated!

Could someone please say the capacity of a CJ-6 oil tank with the Housai installed?
Someone is trying to give me an oil tank from a BT-13 but before accepting, I'd
like
to know the correct capacity. Thank you.

Jay
I had the same problem with my trim cable. I tried to replace it but
concur with the other post that said it's a bitch of a job. I finally
broke down and bought a MAC servo. To me it seemed easier to install the
MAC servo in the elevator and to install all the wires and switches than
it was to try and deal with the cable. Everyone who flys the plane
really likes the electric trim.

Subject: | Fw: Volt Meter " blowing out" |
--> Yak-List message posted by: Bitterlich GS11 Mark G <BitterlichMG@cherrypoint.usmc.mil>
Hi Mike,
I have never had the problem, but will make an observation if I may. Is it
the voltmeter that is really burning out? I.E., the "Voltmeter" actually
measures both Amperage and Voltage in most Russian aircraft. It's normal
operational mode is to measure the charge or discharge from the battery, not
the voltage. If you push in the little "button" on the front, it THEN
measures voltage.
That said, what I suspect may be happening is that you are having a CURRENT
aberration and not necessarily a voltage problem. Voltmeters will typically
take a lot of "over-voltage" before they burn out. They'll usually pin the
meter and actually bent it before failing, plus... what is normally being
read is current not voltage anyway.
Most direct reading ammeters operate with some kind of shunt, and if you
take the thing apart I expect that might be what you find actually going
bad.
If you do that and confirm that is indeed what is happening, and add to that
that nothing ELSE in the aircraft is going up in smoke... you PROBABLY have
a wire shorting to ground causing excessive current draw vice an
over-voltage problem.
Just my 2 cents.

Where does one start to effect repair that will stop this..
IS there an underlying condition that need to be remedied

Subject: | Electric Elevator Trim Installation Instructions |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" <yak52driver@earthlink.net>
Yaksters
As regards installing a MAC servo in your elevator..............
Here is a link to a rough sketch I made of the system I'm using.
http://home.earthlink.net/~yak52driver/trim.jpg
Here is a short explanation.........
Coming off the worm gear is an op rod that goes into the elevator. This
goes to a pivot point on the elevator tube thus transferring the motion
to the trim tab. Open up the elevator and remove these pieces. Save them
as you will use one of the op rods. Take a small sheet of aluminum and
mount it in such a way that you can rivet or bolt it to the elevator rib
AND the pivot point for the old system. You'll need to mount the servo
in such a way that the push/pull arm of the servo is lined up directly
with the trim tab arm. Using one of the old op rods, modify it
appropriately to fit the MAC servo and the trim tab actuating arm. I've
included a rough sketch of what my installation looks like. I recommend
cutting off the fabric, mounting the servo and then recovering. Not a
big deal, really. Just get the book on recovering from Poly Brush
(Stits) available from Spruce and then follow the directions verbatim.
Don't sew the fabric on but use the specially made soft aluminum pop
rivets designed for fabric (available from Spruce). It makes recovering
easy. It's worth it not to have to have that dammed cable system. I
promise, you'll appreciate the fast (almost instant) stick mounted trim
actuation. In actual practice all I do is "blip" the button once or
twice and I'm trimmed. MAC has three servos with short, medium and long
strokes. I'm using the MAC servo with the long stroke
Hope it helps and good luck.

Ira,
I am interested in flying but I have to stay close to home this weekend. If
anyone wants to fly in the Frederick, MD area, I'm in.

Brake fade was quite common with the FSU original pads (on all a/c, the L29
notes this in the manual giving a time between landings) , hence we had made
pads in a modern non asbestos material, this withstands higher temperatures
suitable for the 500 x 150 wheel of the 18, 18T, 50, 52.
I dare not tell you the cost, who I am or where to buy for fear of being
chastised for offering a service and upgrade that enhances safety and is
required ...................
PS, we also do an oversize for worn drums.

The aircraft and pilot were fine it was only a couple of feet over the
edge.
Apparently there is a fix for the Migs brakes that has been done
before.
Some times no matter how much you want to brake ya just can't do it.
Sometimes this happens on the 52 if the brakes are used a lot.

David;
The CJ6 oil tank will hold 19 lts (5 gal US) with an adequate expansion
space. I don't know for sure but expect the BT oil tank is about double
that.

Dear Mike;
About a year ago when I joined the Y.P.A. I downloaded a cloud formation
computer opening icon page. The page changed every 15-20 seconds with
differant formations of clouds. On the right upper corner were famous
aviation anectdotal phrases which were done by Helen Keller, Richard Bach,
Leonardi Da Vinci and Lindberg to name a few. Could you help me locate the
person responsible for designing this wonderful, beautiful wallpaper
background ? I went from windows 95-98 to 2000 when we thought I had a virus
in Dec 2003 and lost the wallpaper. I'd like to do this so I don't have to
have my computer deencripted !!( Costs Mucho Dinerro)

Oops. I hate it when that happens. You got the wrong part. I'll get a new

P.S. Dennis is correct, sort of. I'd put the Schrder in the fitting on the
plane rather than the cap. Pull out the rubber gasket and the hole taps
with a 1/8" pipe tap without drilling, then a $10 Schrader screws in.
If you'd rather do that, let me know and I'll refund your money. (I'll send
you a Schrader free for your trouble too.)
