I conned Walt into letting me stay with him for a few days...it was a great experience. It was also nice to have the MH as a rallying point for everyone. If we continue to do this every year we will have the RPA "central" that everyone will come to for a cold one, some shade, and hanging out with old friends and meeting new ones. Conversely, we could park Walt's T-28 that he traitored his MH for there and hang out under the wings....whoops, did I say that out loud? :) Hey, you put a Red Star on your Beech Staggerwing...how 'bout a Chinese T-28?! Guys, take a minute and go to http://www.flyredstar.org/A_Events.aspx and register for OSH!!! It literally takes one minute. As an event organizer myself, I know how much it helps Herb to have good numbers early.... Cheers, Barry

    Subject: Acceleration
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" <yak52driver@earthlink.net> Acceleration; Put Into Perspective * One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows at the Daytona 500. * Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 11.2 gallons of Nitro-methane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced. * A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to drive the dragster supercharger. * With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle. * At the stoichiometric 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitromethane the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F. * Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases. * Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder. * Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After way, the engine is dieseling from compression plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow. * If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half. * In order to exceed 300 mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate an average of over 4G's. In order to reach 200 mph well before half-track, the launch acceleration approaches 8Gs. * Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have completed reading this sentence. * Top Fuel Engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light. * Including the burnout the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load. * The redline is actually quite high at 9500rpm. * The bottom line: assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once, NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimated $1,000.00 per second. The current Top Fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.441 seconds for the quarter mile (10/05/03, Tony Schumacher). The top speed record is 333.00 mph. (533km/h) as measured over the last 66' of the run (09/28/03 Doug Kalitta). Putting all of this into perspective: Say you are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter "twin-turbo" powered Corvette Z06. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged & ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the 'Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and past the dragster at an honest 200 mph. The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that moment. The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within 3 seconds the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where you just passed him. Think about it, from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1320 foot long race course. That is acceleration

Subject: Re: FAST clinics/OSH-MTW/ and other topics
--> Yak-List message posted by: cjpilot710@aol.com I'm out here flying the bombers and only get to a computer every-once-in-a-while. A very short history about OSH/MTW. Some 5 years ago EAA at OSH asked the different FAST groups if they would please consider haveing their formation clinics at other times than at OSH, BECAUSE the participants were not staying for the full show. Many many times, there would only two of us to fly the last Sunday show. This was the same the T-34s guys too. The T-6 group numbers would fall to less than a 1/3, they were the strongest (and still are) supporters. We pick an out laying field like the others for the convenience. When we had the clinic at the same time, most of us weren't able to see the sights at OSH. We were to busy with the FNGs. Right now you can stay at OSH or MTW and still participate and see the sights. Staying at MTW only allows you to eat without standing waiting for a table or walking miles to catch a bus or whatever. Some like to do both, splitting their time between MTW and OSH. OSH/MTW is more of a get to gather than a training clinic, and was always meant to be so. In any event EAA would like for us to stay though the Sunday show so that we can participate. It would be a real feather in our cap if we as an organization, show our flag, support, just like the T-6 pilots. The powers that be at EAA, see that and will reciprocate, like they have, will our war bird, van parking. When they changed that setup last year, they could have very well left us out from the other groups. But they saw we were growing, that we were getting the group loyalty, like the other groups have (or had). I would very much like to see us fly a bigger formation than the T-6 guys. All you need to do is make your plans to leave on Sunday afternoon (usually means an over night on the way home) or leave on Monday. New topic. While I'm missing the RedStar gathering in the center of the world (NE), I'm out here flying the B-24. Day before yesterday, while standing under NX224J's wing, a short but round built, with a penguin shuffle bought on by age (I thought) gentleman walked up to me. It was no other than Bob Phillips, the #2 test pilot on the B-24 prototype. He showed me a picture when he was a test pilot on the Rayon STA. "Look at that. There I was, a good looking guy with a good looking airplane! Can you imagine what my life was like?" It turns out that penguin shuffle of a walk was cause by crash landing in a B-25H. He retired with over 26,000 which included delivering B-314 flying boats with PAA chief pilot Ed Music, to test flying production B-17s built at Douglas. He's one of those guys whose shoulders we stand on. Sad topic. We lost a good friend and fellow member. Vern was a very descent person. Fun, a very proud father, and could hold formation with the best of us. He had permeant smile lines from the conner of his eyes, and he would move right up next to you and lean in close to tell a joke, or pass on an insight. We don't know the details of his going, and we should wait for the facts. When they come, he will want us to know. For him, it seem to me in the short time I knew him, the world was a wonderful and interesting place. He would want us to know. Go with God Vern. Finally, Hal Morlly let me fly his airplane today. We kind of clean out my pipes after flying (actually herding) the B-24. I showed him a half snap to a split S and he showed me a Shark tooth. For this I got him a ride in the B-24. Thanks Hal. Jim Goolsby PS My son, James Earl Goolsby Jr recieved his Ph. D. today.

But, I faxed what I hope to be the last requirement for the underwriters to accept our (RPA) secure credit card services so pay pal will be just another option next to visa/mastercard/discovery/AmEx... ----- Original Message ----- From: "DaBear" <dabear@damned.org> Subject: Re: Yak-List: MTW/OSH revisited > --> Yak-List message posted by: "DaBear" <dabear@damned.org> > > > I don't use PayPal for many reasons.
