Not that I was the only pilot to have an engine failure on an airplane
yesterday, but I bet its been along time since anyone had an engine failure on
a
B-24J.
At 200'+/-, #4 gave up the ghost. Oil pressure went south, oil temp started
up, all this just after the chip light and oil-by-pass lights came on. Almost
as fast as it took to read this. It was the first time for me in the B-24,
and quite frankly, I was pleased how well the airplane handled. Only needed to
displaced the rudder pedal about 4 to 5 inches. Climbed well - of course we
didn't have a full bomb load. :)
So right now yours truly is stuck at Olympia, Washington. I'll be missing
Vern's memorial service unfortunately. Hal had arranged for Yak-11 pilot Bill
Shepherd to pick me up at our next stop in his Swift to join him and Dough Sapp
for the service. Instead I'll be pulling cowlings all day.

Sputter, Cough and Burble about describes how my engine was running last
Sunday. Went to 9500 and cruised for about 10 minutes when the engine
started to run rough. Reducing power and altitude seemed to help it run
a little better. It all cleared up by the time I got to warmer air at
6000.
Someone said it's most likely carb ice but the air was clear and
visibility unlimited so I'm not altogether convinced. I didn't use carb
heat and it still cleared up. I get the impression it's like I'm loosing
spark intermittently, fuel delivery was bad (Fuel pressure was good) or
I'm experiencing a stuck valve(s). Anyone want to shed some light on
this? I'm stumped.
