Yaksters;
I'm looking for new 8 inch rims/wheels that can be adapted to the 52
main gear. I'm looking to use an 8 inch rim and mound the existing brake
drum to it and then fit the whole assembly on the 52 main gear. Anyone
have an idea as to which rim/wheel would work for this?
Thanks in advance.

Brian has pointed out the advantages of the diesels. The advantage to the steam
turbine is that it burns cheaper fuel (Bunker "C" is almost like tar and has
to be heated to be able to pump it), and that for maneuvering the steam turbines
are more controllable and reliable - when I was shipping as a deck officer
the diesels used compressed air (sound familiar?) to start, and to go from ahead
to astern the diesel had to be stopped and then restarted. One had a limited
number of changes before the air ran out. With the steam turbines one had
almost unlimited ability to maneuver (and to piss off the "snipes" down in the
engine room).

Why would you want to do this? The existing wheels are....
1) available
2) cheap
3) work well
4) have tires that fit and are available and cheap
5) have brakes designed for the wheel that already fit
5) proven over time
I am all for improving on weak areas of a design, but am afraid I don't see the
point of going to all the trouble to "re-invent the wheel".... sorry I just
couldn't help myself!

Actually now they are using diesel-electric systems (like trains) to drive the
ships. The electric motors make for convenient reversing and speed changes.
The newer ships are using drive pods with the electric motors and the screws external
to the hull that are similar to the engines on blimps and dirigibles.
