Gus;
I have access to an experimental machine shop so if I don't like
something I have options. I like the idea of having options. The most
difficult problem is finding an 8 inch rim that can be modified to
accept the existing drum brake. Once I have that licked then a whole new
world of tire options opens up.
The Dico (Carlyle 6.90-6) looks, well, knarley, but more importantly
they affect braking force. The 3.5 inch larger diameter gives the tire
more leverage to work against the brakes thus reducing braking
effectiveness. There is a similar tire made with a 17.5 inch diameter
that closely approximates the original. Only problem is you need an 8
inch rim to mount it on. Hence my search. Considering the fact I've
spent almost $800 in tires the last two years it's time to look for
options. I do plan on keeping this plane for awhile. Anyway, I'm a
homebuilder with a background in R&D so tinkering is what I like to do.
Hell, I'll go so far as to strain gage the installation or have a stress
analysis done on it if I think I have to. Don't cost me nuthin' so why
not?

Yaksters;
I'm looking for new 8 inch rims/wheels that can be adapted to the 52
main gear. I'm looking to use an 8 inch rim and mound the existing brake
drum to it and then fit the whole assembly on the 52 main gear. Anyone
have an idea as to which rim/wheel would work for this?
Thanks in advance.

Does anyone have any experience with running the stock 285 Housai at a higher
RPM than 2350 for takeoff operations? My aircraft has the 345hp Housai and
it runs at 2750rpm. What say you experts?
Also what is the stock prop blade angle setting for blade pitch on the ground?
Thanks for the help.

Frank,
I'm sure you have already done this, but if you haven't, check the clearance
between the tire and the wing when the gear is retracted, particularly with
an additional 3.5" diameter tire. Also, (I know this subject has been
bounced around already) if you haven't tried the Desser retreads, you
should. They clearly last 3-4 times as long as the standard, new Desser
tires. Plus they are only $55 each vs. $130 for new tires. You'll need to
send a set of your old tires back for retreading though.

If you are going to that amount of effort Frank, why just convert over to
cleveland hyd brakes too and be done with the whole thing?
Just my 2 cents, but while the air braking system works fine... it has some
drawbacks too... none of which seem to be present with a hydraulic system
and toe brakes.

Why yes. I have pushed a 285 Huosai beyond it's normal
limits. I ran a grudge drag race off the runway against a
Seneca. I reset prop/governor to run at 2650 RPM and smoked
that spammer good at 170KIAS in a shallow climb. Of course
up high the Seneca's turbos will win out.
I don't recommend doing this unless you have another engine
sitting in the hanger. In my case, it was an M-14P that I
had on standby. After that installation I saw some real
speed (for a CJ).
BTW, for any non-standard CJ engine/prop combo I have found
that it pays to experiment at little with blade settings for
the "sweet spot".

Frank,
Paul Dumoret, the only man in Canada that can make a Toyota door into lethal
weapon, is removing a Cleveland conversion from his CJ. This might be a leg
up for you if you are contemplating converting your 52 to hyd brakes. Paul
sustained hip injuries in a CJ accident a few years back and it hurts him to
have to rock his feet forward to operate the brakes, so he is changing back
to pneumatic brakes. I have CC'd this to Paul, maybe you guys can get
together.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

The smoke pump problem was the pump retaining screws to the motor were to short.
The screws were only long enough to engage two threads into the motor. Longer
screws and locktite have secured the pump. I have a feeling this pump was a
special build as there was no data plate and the motor only had a small label
with an id number and voltage. The pump body had the dash -311 stamped on it.
This should be a watch item for people using FloJet PN. 2100-311 or other FloJet
pumps. Those interested contact me off list and I can forward the parts list.

I don't know why folks want to change the air brakes on the CJs & Yaks. I
mean like you are put in the same class as the great RAF fighter pilots of the

Excuse my spelling. I'm using a lap top and I hit the wrong (send button)
before I checked my spelling (which has never been very good ). Battle of
Briton. Anyway the air system is put together just like a hydraulic ("B" nuts
and
such).
If you loose air you loose brakes. If you loose hydraulic fluid you loose
brakes. What's the difference???
