Gang,
I just got home from an outstanding weekend of flying in Denver. If
you weren't there you really missed an a whole lot of fun. The Rocky
Mountain Region EAA Chapter Fly-In was held at Front Range airport in
Denver and our own Scott (KONG) McMillan SC Region Coordinator was the
Air Events Coordinator.
Scott and all the EAA chapter did an wonderful job at hosting an event
which is sure to become a nationally recognized EAA event. There were a
few (few hundred) planes there that flew in, static or performed in air
show events.
In the air show Kong led an RPA mass formation of eight planes in what
was said to be the best formation ever seen. I believe personally this
is because we were not following T-34s. Speaking of T-34s there was one
on static display. Not sure if it was flown in or towed. :)
There were other Colorado EAA Chapters assisting in handling all the
chores, the one I know was David (Stitch) Petri and his gang from
Colorado Springs held pancake breakfast each day. Great job Stitch!
Plan on attending next year, you will surely not be disappointed.

Pumper,
Good to hear you guys had fun mile high. We easterners also had a blast in
Georgetown where Sean, Adrian, Mike and all the gang at Kindell Aviation did
a phenomenal job at hosting the NorthEast RPA summer bash. Turn out was
good considering the Wx did not always participate. We got 2 Lead and 1
Wing check ride completed in addition to 4 rec rides. I personally flew 11
sorties including the 14-ships saturday beach party. Including the trip
from the great white north, logged 18.3 hrs, managed to position myself on
4s tail in the first maneuver of extended trail (sorry AL) got assigned a
new call sign, did my lead rec ride, not bad for a weekend.
Many thanks to all involved, specialy to the Kindell gang who put up
1000galls of fuel for us to transform into fun and adrenaline. Cant wait
till next time.
See you at OSH.

Better you hear it from me...
I was leading a 4 ship consisting of Hammer Lynch, Steve Dunno his last name
(in his SH 52TW) and DaBear. After about 30min of fun we rejoin and RTB for
a low pass and a kick ass break, Headed towards the setting sun in 3sm Haze
(that's my excuse and I am sticking with it), I then move the flight to
route, and dare to ask if anyone can give me a GPS vector to the airport
having lost my GPS. One on my trusty wingman then click his mike and says,
11 o'clock 1 mile. Being a man who takes responsibilities for his actions,
I will wear it proudly...

The difference between having air brakes and hydraulic brakes is this:
If you get a hydraulic leak, you loose all your fluid and you have no brakes.
With air brakes, if you get a leak you can just make more air....you have a main
air bottle, emergency...etc....
Also...last I checked air isn't near as corrosive as hydraulic fluid.
I flew a CJ that had a Cleveland brake set up...all they had to do for the conversion
was:
1) cut off the existing axles
2) install Beech Baron axles ($$$$$)....(watch that alignment!)
3) install Beech Baron brakes and wheels ($$$$$)
4) install lines, master cylinders, etc for the front and back cockpits
5) modify the rudder pedals
When all was said and done, they didn't work as well as the original brakes...I
guess if you tinkered enough you could get it right....
I'd rather go fly.

Excuse my spelling. I'm using a lap top and I hit the wrong (send button)
before I checked my spelling (which has never been very good ). Battle of
Briton. Anyway the air system is put together just like a hydraulic ("B"

and
such).
If you loose air you loose brakes. If you loose hydraulic fluid you loose
brakes. What's the difference???

Not wanting to argue but:
1. If you get a hyd. leak you usually notice it from the puddle of red fluid
that gets your attention very fast. With an air leak you don't usually
notice it because the system is huffing and puffing air in normal operation.
When you DO notice it, it is usually HUGE. Installing a hyd. brake system
allows these brakes to be completely separate from everything else.
Further, one leak does not cause you to lose both brakes. (Of course having
just one brake is no joy EITHER [smile]) It is also simple (no
proportional brake valve) and has easily available and cheap parts
replacement, and you use American Tires and wheels. Not recaps. Not
expensive tires that wear out quickly, etc.
2. I was under the impression that the Emergency Bottle in YAKS only
allowed you to blow the gear down, not power the brakes. Am I wrong about
that?
3. Having flown a YAK-50 that had a bad leak in the landing gear actuator
(twice), I have seen how easy it is to lose ALL of the compressed air in a
BIG hurry, such that the compressor can not keep up with it and the
reservoir empties faster than it can be filled. Result... no brakes.
4. It is very easy to start a YAK-50 or 52 without opening the main air
valve. Result: No brakes.... and aircraft moving ahead that is essentially
out of control. Pilot error yes.... also aided by brake design. With hyd.
brakes you can use them as much as you please without the result of having
very little air for the next engine start.... unless one sits there at 60%
pumping up the air bottle before shutdown.
5. Hydraulic fluid used in aircraft brakes (such as the old 5606) is not a
corrosive, being a petroleum based substance, however it is a carcinogen
which could be considered worse I suppose.
6. Hyd. brakes easily work as well as the air brakes, and allow a much finer
level of control than the air brakes using a differential valve to port air
to each wheel. As an example, Segei Boriak once told me that very few
Russian pilots ever wheel landed the Yak-50. He seemed surprised when I
said it was easy and I did it all the time. Then I admitted that I had hyd.
toe brakes and he laughed and said: "OH, that explains it".
7. How many brake handle and cable failures have we heard of in the 50 and
52's & CJ's?
I am not condemning the pneumatic brake design. I have flown it, and I
enjoy it. It can be a little bit of a challenge at first in a tail wheel
aircraft, but is mastered quickly enough to enjoy flying the aircraft.
However, I do not consider it to be a "superior system", just different. On
the other hand, a hyd. brake conversion, while not cheap, does address some
safety issues in a very effective way and has the other benefits that I
listed above.
In the end, it is all what you like best, and what you enjoy spending your
money on. I LOVE my Cleveland brakes and Goodyear Tires. Others LOVE their
EFIS cockpits. I consider both to be pretty good improvements.

Kong, or any other Yakers in the greater Denver area,
Looks like I will be in Denver arriving Wednesday evening and departing
Sunday evening. If anyone is planning to go flying and wouldn't mind a GIB
let me know.

Dan;
When you get in town call me. 970-532-5288. Might get you in as GIF SU-29, if
you wish. Formation scares me.

If anyone who knows me, knows that I believe the Brits and the Battle of
Britain, was the finest hours ever on all the battles of WW2. If I had a million
or two $ the very first airplane I would buy would be the Hawker Hurricane
MK2. It won the Battle hands down. One only has to look at statistics, the Spit
got the glory, the 'Hurry' did the work.
AND - IF I ever need another woman in my life, she would be a British lass.

I was actually providing a smooth platform for all the IP to enjoy
flying
for once instead of sitting in the backseat. Not eligible for my lead
until
august. Scary isn't it?

Rick,
Thanks for the offer, looks like I will have to pass since the flight has
been cancaled. Welsome to the world of corporate aviation. But I will keep
you number for the next time.
