We repair the aluminiun tanks with PRC DESOTO PR-1440
It is very good product, it used in aeronaultical companies everyday.
In the web page of DESOTO you can see similar products.
You have to remove all the screws of the cover tank.
The tank has to be unfilled and dry.
First you clean the aluminiun with a grin paper and with a solvent. After
you
aply the sealant. It is very easy. Afer 24 hours the sealant is like rubber.

David,
Sorry about not replying sooner. I am in Europe and have been busy.
Fuel tank first.
The Overflow line. This line comes from the edge of the filler, through the
tank and out the bottom. It is to drain any over flow when fueling. For
some reason they put two 90 degree turns in the line. If the aircraft has
ever been exposed to rain and then freezing temperatures, there is a
possibility that this line is ruptured inside the fuel tank because of water
trapped in one of the bends. There are a number of ways to check this. If
the fuel tank is full, put you finger on the inlet and apply a small amount
of pressure to the line on the bottom. If you see air bubbles, call Jill and
Carl. There is a way to fix it.
1. Defuel the tanks
2. Remove them from the aircraft
3. Clean the outside
4. I used paint stripper to clean the rivet line and then a brass brush and
then MEK for the final cleaning.
5. Mix soap and water in a spray bottle.
6. Put the fuel cap on the tank.
7. Have someone put their finger over the vent line. ( Not the one coming
out the bottom of the tank. That is an overflow )
8. Wrap a rag or something to make a seal around an air gun and press it
against the main fuel line fitting. Turn the pressure down to almost
nothing. I watched the tank and when I could see signs of expansion , I
would stop. Every few seconds I would have to add a small amount of air. If
you had the correct fittings and a low pressure regulator, you could setup a
better system with a few oz. of air pressure. Do not over pressure the tank.
9. Have someone start spraying the soap and water over the seam and rivets.
Some of the leaks around the rivets may be very small and hard to find.
10. Clean the area again with MEK. Other solvents will work, but I like MEK.
11. Use tape to make a line on both sides of the rivet line or what ever you
need to seal. This is only to make a nice clean break.
12. Mix the PR 1440 ( FAA approved aircraft fuel tank sealer )
13. Apply the sealer and let it stand for about thirty minutes. Remove the
tape.
14. Leave it alone for 24 hours.
15. Apply Zinc Chromate primer to all exposed surfaces.
16. Reinstall.
Air Tank: Your guess is as good as mine. I had a small amount of rust. I
washed the inside of the tank with solvent. Looked in with an inspection
light. I didn't find anything other than minor pitting. I filled the tank
with water, made a fitting to adapt to my scuba compressor and pressured the
tank to 1200 pounds. ( 150% of normal working pressure). I let it stand for
thirty minutes, looked for any sign of water on the outside. Depressurized
the tank, washed it out with solvent, let it dry, added a few drops of tool
oil, and reinstalled. I don't know that this is the correct way, but it
seems to be the way most are doing it. Be careful when inspecting under
pressure. 1200 pounds of water pressure. Be sure and fill with water. Air
will make a great bomb.

Good morning Aubrey. That's a pretty nice set of photos you have on your
site and I'm interested to hear a bit more about a couple of points when you
have time, please.
First..can you describe the process of the fuel tank repair up to ready for
install ? Secondly, the air tank test. I looked inside mine and found some
rust..no much but signs of some. I haven't pressure tested it yet but was
advised by some that if rust is present, dump the tank for a new one. Any
rules or advice on that one? Is 1,200 lbs the standard
rule for testing the tank? Thanks..

Aubrey,
Jets guys and some big engine prop warbirds used to need a "Letter of
Authorization" (LOA) from the FAA to fly their toys. Since a couple of
years ago, the FAA changed the LOA to "Experimental Type Rating" or ETR.
They simply list on your certificate which high performance warbird one is
allowed to enjoy.

Dixon/MTW flyers,
Next weekend, at the same time as the Dixon airshow, the
NATA T-6's are doing their clinic at Aurora (ARR), about
44NM east of Dixon. Perhaps a flyby if schedule allows?
