I wish I had more time to write this, but the reader's digest version
is better than nothing.
A few years ago, Doug Sapp imported 2 brand spanking new CJ's. Hal
Morely bought one and is tricking it out like nobody's business, and
Doug still has the other one for sale. The planes were both taken to
DVT for Bill Blackwell to put together and certify...something he has
done as much as anyone else in the country, if not more.
Last week I got an email from Doug saying that the plane was finished
and he wanted it brought up to Omak...something he could not do because
he is still too busy killing flowers. A few rounds of emails later we
had all the details worked out and this past Friday morning I cranked
up my CJ, flew it to DVT, and began the journey north. Keep in mind
this was a brand new airplane making it's maiden voyage, with only the
FAA required hours flown off.
With the handheld radio installed, the Garmin 295 in hand, all wires
taped down, and a few WAC charts in hand. The trip was planned for 950
nm., and 3 hops thanks to the very cool fuel bladders Blackwell is now
installing that net you just over 60 gallons. A few insurance snafu's
wiped out the possibility of a single day trip. At just after 3 p.m. I
pushed the throttles up, lifted off (eventually...man is flying the
stock airplane an eye opener after 200+ hours behind the M14P!), and
set a 326 course for SGU. The first stop was St. George, UT...a short
200 nm. hop to check the plane over. All was perfect, only burned
about a quart of oil in the 1.6 hrs. flight, no leaks, etc. There was
not enough day light left to make my next planned stop just outside of
Boise, ID, so it looked like Elko, NV, was going to be the spot.
Lots of high terrain between SGU and EKO. At 10,500 I spent as much
time dodging mountain peaks as I did isolated rain showers. It was fun
and ended with the ever hospitable EKO tower asking for a low pass to
the overhead...reluctantly, I obliged. ;) Met a Chinook fire fighting
crew at the airport and learned a lot about firefighting while we
waited for the shuttle to the hotel. Amazing stuff. Did you know that
the Chinook can carry a 3000 gallon bucket? They have all kinds of
cool controls and pumps on them too...
After a good night's sleep, I topped the plane off and mentally got
ready for a max. endurance flight....single hop from EKO to Omak, WA.
If the winds were as predicted, it would be about 3.5 hours. That's
485 nm!!!!! Well, the winds were almost as predicted, and 700YK -
along with my completely void of feeling butt - arrived into OMK with
about 45 minutes of fuel on board. Start up to shut down was
3:49....perhaps an unofficial record in type. A record my butt DOES
NOT want me to try to surpass, I can assure you.
The rest of the day was spent hanging out with Doug and his wife
Kathleen, getting back in the CJ (to go "show" the airplane to some
neighbors), and was capped off with one of the best home cooked meals
I've had in a long time.
The biggest surprise came when Doug handed me a watch, and said "I bet
not every ferry pilot gets one of these" as he handed me a brand new
Breitling watch! I was floored. I knew Doug was excited to get his
airplane home, but I never expected THAT kind of payment...wow! Hey,
Doug, I'll ferry airplanes for you ANY TIME!
After a good night's rest and Papa Sapp's famous pancakes, his
brother-in-law picked me up in his C180....right at Doug's house! He
has a dirt strip there. Very cool as it was my first taste of bush
flying. We landed in Spokane 40 minutes later. I jumped on the big
bird to Phoenix, and to make my butt really unhappy, got back in my CJ
and flew the 2.1 hours home.
All in all I totaled about 12 hours and 1500 miles of stick time. I
don't think I'll need to fly again for a day or two...
If you ever get the chance to stop into Omak and say "hi" to the
Sapp's, it's an opportunity you don't want to pass up. And I have
first dibs on his next ferry flight request! ;)
Cheers,
Barry

Sorry Barry,
I claim 4hrs 50 mins as the longest Nanchang flight. It was part of my ferry flight
from Australia to N.Z. The sector was from Norfolk Island to Auckland, New
Zealand. I can vouch for the sorest backside. Any advances on 4.50 out there
or is noone else that stoopid!

Doug,
The original Aussie owners installed an aluminium tank which sat in the back seat.
It has a line through to the front cockpit then an oh N/ohh F F actuator then
down to the collector tank. I had another tank made up that fitted into the
baggage area behind the back seat and cascaded into the back seat tank. It gave
me another 150 litres of fuel. It was all very simple and very effective but
you wouldn't want to use it all the time.
The route flown was (get out your atlas now) Coffs Harbour-Lord Howe Island (overnight)
2.12. Next day LHI-Norfolk 3.50 Norfolk-Auckland 4.50.
It was mostly over water and the Housai never missed a beat (and believe me I was
listening carefully).
Not quite the flash tank installation I am reading about on the list but nevertheless
good for the job required.
Graeme

Sorry yall but I have taken the Nanchang flight record and will not
relinquish it without a fight. With my Haiyan C with just at 92 gals on board
did
6.3hrs aloft with fuel left over but my butt completely gone.
Figure I can go 7.5hrs if I want to push the record up but will have to get
some kind of miracle seat cushion for that record.
Any challengers?

Hmm, I have done 11 hours nonstop in my Comanche (Gander, Newfoundland, to Shannon,
Ireland) but will have to see with The Project. My longest flight in the
CJ6A with stock fuel was 3h+10m (leaving me with a 45 minute reserve) but you
can't really go longer than that (safely) in the CJ6A with the Huosai engine
and stock fuel.
The Project has Doug's long-range aux tanks in the wing center section. I guess
if I am going to go for the time-aloft record I will need to add the big fuel
cells to the fuel tankage in the outer wing section. How big are those fuel
cells again?

Brian, I have factory 42gal in the wings and factory 50 gal in the center
section leading edge tanks. They are stainless steel as they also used them for
spraying.
