--> Yak-List message posted by: "Nico Goulet" <ngoulet@alum.mit.edu> The manual (At least the one I have) indicates that all Aresti maneuvers are permitted. The issue is not to let the plane drop too much and the way down, so that you do not overstress the elevator assembly. I fly them in mine, but I would recommend tying a flow indicator to your pitot tube (in other words a piece of string... very high tech...) so that you can control exactly when the tail slide initiates. Then you can make sure you do not hold the slide more than one length of the plane. Of course I would emphatically recommend that you have been through full safety courses and flat spin recovery training with your own aircraft before you fly this type of advanced maneuver. As you surely know flat spin recovery characteristics vary from plane to plane, and if you just got yours, you should certainly go through the works, whatever your level of proficiency in the CJ... I do however suggest you get Gennady Elfimov's direct advice. His e-mail is fly@skytrace.co.uk. Gennady is the best Yak 52 pilot and instructors I know of. I am sure he can give you lots of advice. -----Original Message----- From: owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of egon Subject: Yak-List: Tail Slides --> Yak-List message posted by: "egon" <egon@hinet.net.au> Gday all! I have just purchased a Yak 52 to keep my CJ company in the hangar and to feel twice as insulted the next time there is a Yak vs CJ discussion! Seriously though, one of the Yak manuals I have has several question marks next to tail slides under the Aerobatics section. What is the consensus amongst you Yak 52 gurus out there? Are tail slides ok or not? Thanks in advance. Egon. P.S. Life sucks, dont it?

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" <yak52driver@earthlink.net> Speaking of tail slides....... During the restoration of my 52 I removed the horiz stabilizer and upon inspection noticed a crack in the doubler that joined or re-inforced the two halves at the rear of the stab. The piece is shaped like a "V" with a flat bottom. I fabricated an exact replica from a slightly thicker piece 2023, drilled out the old piece and riveted on the new one. My suggestion is that others inspect this area for cracks as well. Subject: Re: Tail Slides
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Richard Basiliere" <BasiliereR@ci.boulder.co.us> Egon; First...good for you. Does that fill your hangar or are there to be others? Tailslides, ahhhh! I was trained in my -52 (also -55 and SU-29) by Azat Zaydullin, Ukraine National Champ with 1000's of -52 hours. We did tailslides, I believe the manual was shown to me to indicate "All Aresti maneuver" are acceptable in the -52, the tailslides both wheels up and wheels down are listed in Aresti. The key, same in the Sukhoi, is to "freeze" the controls as the slide initiates and absolutely- positively do not allow the controls to be slammed around during the slide. This will take some effort at least initially until you learn the pressures that will occur trying to rip the stick out of your hands sometimes. When ailerons and rudder are not perfectly centered and elevator is not forced to remain against the stop. I was also taught three tumbles (gyroscopics) in the -52, also flying backwards somewhat during the tumble. Lomcevak, Abra-ca-dab-ra, Adel Weiss. The -52 tolerates "Ulimited" figures well also prop @ 100% (I know that gives some of you chills - and I respect that). An authoritative source here in the US, I would say, is Nikolay Timofeev. As an Aeronautical Engineer and as Russian three time World Champion with at least 100's of -52 hours I would listen to him (as I do RE:my SU-29). His e-mail niktim@earthlink.net Also a great one to teach you proper tailslides or whatever, and available from FL. You'll love the -52, do it all, get the best dual, make sure there is nothing besides you and what clothes you decide to wear (pockets totally empty) inside prior to any acro. Oh yes, learn all the emergency recoveries, flat spins et al. You will not - for sure - flat spin out of any tailslides. Why? Because, other than landing and power off spins, the other time ALL power is removed (prior to slide). No power - no flat spin. She may slide more or less depending on technique but will always "play lawn dart" sooner or later with that M14P on the front. Any power left on at the time of slide makes her torque and not a pretty slide. Respectfully, Rick B Comments? Mark - you there? >>> egon@hinet.net.au 8/4/2004 11:03:43 PM >>> --> Yak-List message posted by: "egon" <egon@hinet.net.au> Gday all! --> Yak-List message posted by: "egon" <egon@hinet.net.au> Nico, Dennis and Rick....Thankyou. I had an Su-26 a few years back ( until a marital re-arrangement turned it into a house! ) Nikolai Nikituk who I believe was No. 2 in the world at the time coached me on the aircraft and I discovered that aircraft limits were not really all that important to the Russians in that style of flying. That being said, I have incredible respect for their ability and their aircraft. Rick, I am afraid that with two aeroplanes a Bar and a Juke Box, the hangar (Australian spelling!) is almost full, but as it is all on my property, I guess I will just have to build another hangar. ( Don't tell the Fiancee'!) Cheers Egon.

    Subject: Yak 52 brake problem
--> Yak-List message posted by: David Marsh <swampy@videotron.ca> Folks, I'd like some advise before getting up to my elbows in pneumatic parts ....... My Yak has got into the habit of not fully releasing one of the wheel brakes. However, if I move the rudder pedals to and fro, the differential braking releases the trapped air in the brake line and it releases. From the system schematics, it appears that brake pressure modulation (both direct and diferential) is done inside the differential brake unit. If that is correct, I suspect a blob of gunk inside that unit. So ; questions. 1. Is my diagnosis sound 2. Does anyone have a schematic for the inside of this unit (part number y 135) 3. Any tips on how to get the unit out. Thaks all, Dave.

Check barnstormers under warbirds for peliminary pictures.....Marcus

    Subject: Horiz Stab Cracks
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" <yak52driver@earthlink.net> Deon; I uploaded a hand drawn pic of the how the crack looked on the horiz stab. It's not the best pic but it will give you the idea of where to look and what to look for. Here's the link http://home.earthlink.net/~yak52driver/crack.jpg I recommend everyone look in this area as it seems other things I've discovered have been found in other airplanes as well. For example, remove your front seat and look in the area where the rudder cables come thru the main spar. One of the fuel lines runs directly over the rudder cable and if it should ever get bent downwards (likely if performing maintenance in the front cockpit with the seat removed) it could be touching the rudder cable. The rudder cable will then act like a saw and eventually cut thru the fuel line. It happened to me so it's not impossible in other airplanes.
