Excellent point Frank. During inspections on many 52's I have found
precisely the same thing and in fact had to fabricate and install a new fuel
line on one of them (definitely not an easy task) because the cable had
sawed the fuel line to within .001" of fracturing.
Use a mirror and flashlight placed underneath the fuel lines to inspect for
any evidence of sawing or rubbing. Try placing your index finger between
the cable and fuel line and feel for any grove in the fuel line. If your
finger will go between the fuel line and cable without much pressure on the
cable or fuel line, the clearance is adequate.

Frank,
I just went to your link and looked at your drawing. You called it the
horizontal stab, but the drawing looks like the elevator. Is it the
elevator?

Deon;
I uploaded a hand drawn pic of the how the crack looked on the horiz
stab. It's not the best pic but it will give you the idea of where to
look and what to look for. Here's the link
http://home.earthlink.net/~yak52driver/crack.jpg
I recommend everyone look in this area as it seems other things I've
discovered have been found in other airplanes as well. For example,
remove your front seat and look in the area where the rudder cables come
thru the main spar. One of the fuel lines runs directly over the rudder
cable and if it should ever get bent downwards (likely if performing
maintenance in the front cockpit with the seat removed) it could be
touching the rudder cable. The rudder cable will then act like a saw and
eventually cut thru the fuel line. It happened to me so it's not
impossible in other airplanes.

Speaking of tail slides.......
During the restoration of my 52 I removed the horiz stabilizer and upon
inspection noticed a crack in the doubler that joined or re-inforced the
two halves at the rear of the stab. The piece is shaped like a "V" with
a flat bottom. I fabricated an exact replica from a slightly thicker
piece 2023, drilled out the old piece and riveted on the new one. My
suggestion is that others inspect this area for cracks as well. Frank

Let's see:
Bush:
Created the Department of Homeland Security
Created the Washington ADIZ and effectively killed three airports near
DC
Creates random TFRs when he moves about
Sponsored draconian penalties for violation of *anything* (including
random TFRs)
Issued Presidential Proclamation ostensibly to "protect" us from Cuba
but actually violates amendments three, four, and five of the Bill
of
Rights
(http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/02/20040226-11.html)
Kerry:
Government-loving liberal
Big Brother does things, "for our own good."
The other way of looking at it: Bush already *HAS* screwed us and Kerry
has yet to screw us. But I am not so stupid as to think that Democrats
are friends of us rich people using private aircraft for our own gain.
:-Q
Looks like a loss for aviation no matter which way you look at it.

On the other hand, when considering which man would be better for
aviation in the US, consider this from the AOPA:
----
NO TFRs YET FOR KERRY CAMPAIGN
So far, so good. Sen. John Kerry's campaign has not asked for
temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) to follow him as he travels
the country. As the official Democratic candidate for president,
Kerry has the option of asking for TFRs in addition to regular Secret
Service protection. "On behalf of the hundreds of thousands of
pilots who rely on predictable access to airspace for their
flight activities, I want to personally thank you for your
common-sense approach to security in not requesting airspace
restrictions for your campaign travels," AOPA President Phil Boyer
wrote in an August 2 letter to Kerry. Ground-based security
measures are the most effective way to ensure the safety of
candidates, their staff, and citizens, AOPA said. See
( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/newsitems/2004/040803kerry.html ).

Marcus,
I spied your photos on barnstormers. It's a pity about the voltage regulator
but thanks for searching hi and lo. I think the rectifier looking thing you
are referring to might be an even earlier VR which has valves instead of the
one I have which has the carbon pile and coil. If it has cannon type plugs
instead posts with screws in them then it is an indication that it is the
earler model of VR. I don't think it is worth sending to me but thanks for
the offer.
Long sigh....So anyone out there who has a voltage reg they don't need I am
again in the market for a carbon pile type one.

Considering that he's just a senator, who looks like a Kennedy, talks like a
Kennedy, has more money than a Kennedy, and has more "Purple Hearts" than any
Kennedy. I'd say he's expendable in my book. Sorry folks Bush is my man and
you need not try to talk me out of voting for him. You take Michele Moore and
shove him up Kerry's butt and he would look like he always does, full of S*&T.

Troops,
Almost home. Left overhead from OSH after the Sunday show. I was the ONLY
RPA airplane there. Me and the only T-34 guy team up with the T-6 guys. I was
tail-end #4 in the second and last flight. Don't worry I was able to stick
my nose right up in there tight. I stopped in MTW to pick up some stuff I'd
left, in time to help Ray Reese there discover a airleak in his Y-52, than I was
on my way.
I caused a bit of a stir with ORD's approach control radar when it seem my
mode C was showing me at 4,700' along the shore line, when in fact I was under
the B's floor at 2,000'. In calling Muncie, IN, that I was crossing their
control zone, they said they had me visual and would I please call, the ORD
supervisor. GLUP!! It turned out that he merely wanted to let me know that the
Mode C was TU. I ended up having to buy a brand new mode C at my next stop. The
next day I made the short trip to Green County airport just SE of Dayton.
Here I spent a few days going though the USAF Museum. I discovered my Pam Am
707 instructor, Don Covic's B-29 that he flew in Korea. "Command Decision"
which had the characters "Dopy and Grumpy" of the Show White story flipping a
coin painted on the plane's nose. It was famous because in a 122 missions,
Don's crew shot down 5 Mig-15! The only piston or jet bomber to do so.
Thursday found me trying to inch my way east behind a cold front. My GPS
plus weather over the West Virginia mountains, had me over night right on the
Ohio River in Moundsville, WV, site of the oldest known indian burial mound in
the US. The next morning I pushed my way to Gattesburg, a quick refuel and than
on to ILG, where at this time I play with my grand babies. Here my wife and
I celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary. I gave her 3 white roses and 9 pink
ones, plus a lobster dinner with wine. (Do I know how to treat my woman or
not?)
On the 10th I'll head south for FL. The odyssey continues.
My OSH / MTW adventure? Gang there is too much to tell. Too much happens,
too much to see, too much food, and way too many friends.
