I rode out hurricane Erin on my Sailboat in Cape Canaveral. That was
interesting. Never said that I dont respect Hurricanes. I fueled up the
genset, got supplies, removed all potential missles from my yard etc. I must
admit that it didnt seem like a Cat 4 when it hit shore by the looks of the
TV reports and lack of storm surge. It was the after pictures that gave me a
new perspective on the storm.
I'm waiting to see when they're going to allow people back on Sanibel
Island. We need to go down and inspect our Condo. From the pics on the
internet it seems to have survived, but we need to take a closer look.

Craig,
I used a GE 308 24v bulb because it was handy.
You must file off one of the side attachment pins on this bulb so it will
lock in and align with the bottom two contacts.
I then connected the power to one of the contacts and the ground to the
other contact. I used the original braided shielding for the ground.

Gentlemen,
The power just returned (thank God). Until you have lived in a dark cave for
several days, you remember to praise Mr. Edison.
Am so pleased to read that Jim, Ernie, Bill and Craig made it through fine.
Bill gets the award for using his head and going to Pompano Beach. He fly's
out of Flagler County Airport, about twenty miles north of here. Flagler
didn't get a direct hit, but had high winds and multiple tornados.
Prior to Charlie, our area had had daily heavy thunderstorms with an August
total of over 20 inches. Daytona Beach is low anyway, so the soil was
saturated before the hurricane.
As you know, Charlie didn't follow projections, and made a right turn at the
last minute.
The center passed directly over Spruce Creek. The winds had come down to
around 100 m.p.h.
Pilots take care of each other, so we managed to find hangar space for every
aircraft. Some residents were up north for the summer, and others doubled up.
So we had no aircraft damage. With about 650 planes in our fly-in, that was
quite an accomplishment.
We have many hundreds of very large and old oak and pine trees. When the sun
came up we found dozens broken and spread everywhere. My yard was covered
with someone's roof tiles and soffit pieces. Luckily, my only damage was some
loss of trim on my hangar and to the pool enclosure due to flying debris.
The community broke out our chain saws to start clearing the runway,
taxiways, and streets.
Other parts of the State were involved with more destruction, and still about
500,000 without power.
Being a native, this is my seventh hurricane, but you never get used to
massive forces of wind and tornados.
Glad to still be around!
