Subject: Hurricanes and flying club (was: Charlie)
--> Yak-List message posted by: Brian Lloyd <brianl@lloyd.com> I am glad to hear that none of my friends suffered any damage. On a related topic, I have started a flying club down here in St. Thomas. Right now I am putting together the contingency plan for getting our airplanes out of Dodge should it appear that we are going to take a hit. So far the weather gods have protected us and turned the storms either south or north of us but the season is not even half over. I have to come up with a plan for getting three airplanes off the island to safety. (Possibly more as more people participate in the club.) This probably means a run to the States where we can move east or west to avoid the storm track. If you have or know of good facilities to temporarily host our airplanes, please let me know. Right now the complement is a Cherokee 180, a Comanche 250, and an Aztec. We may also have a Cessna Skymaster, otherwise affectionately known as the Huff 'n Puff, Pushme Pullyou, or (my favorite) Suck 'n Blow, but its owner hasn't committed to joining ... yet. BTW, I am hoping to add two Yak-52s so we can do unusual attitude, aerobatic, formation, and ACM training. I would love to hear from you if you think you would be willing to pay to come down and spend a week in the Virgin Islands doing this sort of training. The idea would be to put together all-inclusive packages that include aircraft, instructor(s), food, lodging, and other "fun stuff" (like a day of sailing). I need the feedback in order to justify the club purchasing two Yak-52s. BTW, as we get going we would probably "comp" instructors who would like to come down and assist until we can get our own instructors up-to-speed. BTW, This will *NOT* be a tourist activity. This will be oriented to pilots. Everyone must be a pilot or student pilot capable of handing the front cockpit of a Yak-52. I know that includes everyone on this list. The USVI is one of the preeminent vacation locations in the Caribbean. We are only a 45 minute ferry ride from the British Virgin Islands and a 45-minute flight to Puerto Rico or St. Martin so we can also provide a really good time for your non-flying "significant other". --> Yak-List message posted by: "cpayne1@joimail.com" <cpayne1@matronics.com> My Sin? Busting a TFR. When? 28 months ago. On Friday the 13th, Hurricane Charley day, the results of my informal hearing with an FAA Senior Attorney came in: Case Withdrawn. I was on my way to SNF via Jim Goolsby's from Northern IL in April of 2002. I did everything according to the "book", I got a weather briefing, asked for and got a TFR briefing as well. While on VFR flight following I entered a TFR. NOT the controllers fault, their responsibility is ONLY traffic separation. Based on my briefing I assumed I was West of the TFR. As it turned out I heard and copied 23NM on the 355 radial off HUF when it was actually 335 at 23NM. Terra Haute nailed 4 guys that day, including 2 police helicopters on official police business. It turns out that it was kind of a game at that facility; how many today? To shorten the story, I caught a break because: - I cooperated with investigators (I felt I did everything I should of anyway). - I filed a Timely NASA form and kept the tear-off in a file. - I hired an Aviation Attorney. - Proved I had received remedial training by earning my Commercial. - The FAA failed to preserve the Briefing tapes even though I had requested them. - The investigator's notes from his conversation with me were missing. - I can be really humble when I have to. - The TFR I violated will become a NSA in 2 weeks (check your new charts) - Today's FAA enforcement focus is on Presidential and ADIZ TFRs Lessons Learned: - Always call for a briefing, even if you are going around the patch to warm 'er up. - Keep a NAV log for all your cross countries. - Check one of the web sites for daily updates: EAA or AOPA - Keep a NASA form handy, my wife had to fax one to me at my hotel. BTW, as part of discovery, I have the disciplinary guidelines memo that is issued to all field enforcement offices. Very little wiggle room...that NASA form and an Attorney is all you really have. Thanks. I really appreciate that. I will keep that in my reserve > I'd be really interested in coming down to participate in your shindig > i > just for the fun of it. But I have no 52 time just CJ time. You will find the systems and aircraft handling sufficiently similar that you can move between them with only minimal additional training. My experience is that a competent CJ6A pilot should be able to get into the front seat of a -52 with an IP in the back seat after only about 30 minutes of ground school and cockpit familiarization. The converse holds true for a -52 pilot climbing into the front seat of a CJ6A with an IP in the back seat. Transition is not all that difficult and should only take a flight-hour or so for a pilot with experience with several different aircraft. Regardless, I need to get a bunch more training myself before I would feel competent to instruct in the -52 for acro. But that is what this is all about, eh? --> Yak-List message posted by: "Doug Sapp" <rvfltd@televar.com> Kendel, I have bought several 20's and also some 40's, both open and closed top. What's your end use? End use normally determines quality, quality determines price. In Alaska some of the guys are buying 2 40's, putting them about 40 feet apart, putting trusses over them and using them for hangers (check with your building code) You end up with a 56 X 40 foot hanger (40 X 40 floor space) and all the very secure storage or work area that you could ever use. There is a company in Seattle that referbs them and will install man doors and or roll up doors in the sides which would make a nice shop area. The last 2 20's I bought were insulated 20's which have 4 inches of insulation in the walls, top and doors. Check with a freight forwarder at your closest sea port. If you need help give me a call @509-826-4610 anytime. It cheaper the closer you are to where ever the container is. It's best to inspect it BEFORE delivery. Check the inside for leaks or rust spots, any damage to the outside and for sure make sure the doors open, close and lock FULLY with no binding. Have there been welded repairs? If so are they rusting out? What kind of floor do you want? Solid oak, ply oak or some leftover sawmill rejects. Everything is up for negotiating the price. When I bought mine the war had just started and the US Government had bought up so many of these units that the price was pretty high. A couple of pressure treated 10' 4 x 4's should be enough the keep it off the ground. One last thing, which makes all the difference in the world, you should say where you are from or where you need this container so that won't be a guessing came. --> Yak-List message posted by: "Doug Sapp" <rvfltd@televar.com> Kendel, The insulated 20's have very little steel in them, and should not be effected by the steel issue. Because of the insulation they would be a bugger to break down and scrap. These containers are used at the ports and are normally hooked up to a portable AC unit. They just have 2 large holes in the back end where the ducts hook up (do not have mounted AC units). I have two of them that I have converted into fumigation chambers to nuke my preserved flowers before shipment (methyl bromide). Another good storage unit is a retired Safeway dry van, I have 6 of those, which make great low cost storage, all came to me with pretty good rubber and near new brakes. They have roll up doors. --> Yak-List message posted by: "David Stroud" <davestroud@rogers.com> Sorry to come in so late on this topic, but I just drove past my favourite scrapper today and 'lo and behold, they had a container out front with a sign on it saying 20' and 40' containers for sale. Would you like me to inquire? They are up in Ottawa, Canada, about 45 minutes from NY state. Canuk bucks are worth about .75 US. --> Yak-List message posted by: Kendel McCarley <kmmccarley@earthlink.net> Yes, I would. Thanks. I'd need it shipped to the rail yard in Tucson, AZ. Should be about $500 total shipping. -----Original Message----- From: David Stroud <davestroud@rogers.com> Subject: Re: Yak-List: 20' Container Needed --> Yak-List message posted by: "David Stroud" <davestroud@rogers.com> Sorry to come in so late on this topic, but I just drove past my favourite scrapper today and 'lo and behold, they had a container out front with a sign on it saying 20' and 40' containers for sale.
