I received my copy of the All Red Star 2004 DVD & Photo Compilation yesterday.
Felt like Christmas in August ... I almost hugged my not-so-friendly mail
carrier.
For those of us lurking on this list hoping to one day be a Yak/CJ owner, this
DVD is most definitely motivating. Great video of all the action and awesome
editing. The music choice was top notch as well. Congrats to Hartley
Postlethwaite and the folks at South Valley Mobile Television (Cynthia
Stagner) for producing an excellent product!

Yakkers;
I built a smoke system for my 52 and it works like a charm. It has
enough oil capacity for about 3 minutes worth of smoke. I don't fly in
air shows much (I'm mostly acting as a static display) so I wonder what
is the typical need for how long we can produce smoke?
In other words, how long do you think a smoke system should put out
smoke?
While I'm at it, what other things make up the ideal smoke system for
your aircraft and your specific needs?
I'm thinking maybe three minutes of smoke isn't enough. Any suggestions
as to the ideas
Thanks in advance!

9 gals of smoke weighs close 70 pounds. Where the heck did you mount the
tank so as not to affect weight & balance? I have mine mounted where the
radios used to be mounted. Did you do your routine solo?

The History Channel showing of "Tactical to Practical" will be Tuesday August
31st at 8pm PST. Check your local listings for it. They have been playing
little snip-its of the ALL REDSTAR Event for the commercial leading up to
season three. Saw Hunter Ellis on Friday night in Las Vegas. He is now looking
to purchase a Yak 52 to fly in San Diego in the spring. It is the OPENING Show
for season THREE......
He had a great time and wants to get into the group once the show slows down.
He has a FIVE year contract. Great show.
What ever happened to the RPA store that was to be up four weeks ago? Anyone
know what is going on? Seems quite now on the website.........

Gents,
We had to bottom the nose strut on my CJ-6 to lift the engine for mount
replacement. Ever since it hasn't been right, leaking and not holding
a charge. I've asked gentleman Doug whether he had new chevron seals
and he didn't. I've tried some metric crossover and they dont seal
well. We tried putting the old ones back on and the whole thing just
ain't workin'.
Has anyone dealt with this out there? If I have new chevrons
manufactured would anybody wan't some? I'm going to try a shim on the
gland nut and see if that helps, after that I am clue-less.

Thanks. I need about 12 minutes for my airshow routine and of course
the "4 minute free" in competition needs ---4 minutes. The SU-29 has
8.4 gallon smoke tank with a 1.5 liter per minute flow rate.

There is a product that is available that adds to the hyd. fluid in the
strut itself called Granville Strut Sealer. One kit sells for about $26
from Aircraft Spruce and will do one strut. They make bigger kits for
multiple struts, etc. This stuff basically will be absorbed by the seal and
will cause it to swell. If your chevron seal is torn and just basically
ruined, this kit is not likely to work. On the other hand, if your seal is
just hard and is by-passing, then this kit WILL work. I have tried it
myself on a number of aircraft and it worked very very well. I keep a
complete kit on hand at all times. Below is a link to the product. For
$26, I'd take the chance... what can you lose? It may get you going for the
next 75 days until Doug can get you a proper rebuild kit.
Good luck,
Mark Bitterlich

Subject: | Communication EarPlugs |
--> Yak-List message posted by: PSalter@aol.com
Fellow Yak Pilots,
Recently I decided to buy the best ANR headset I could find. Currently I own
a Bose X and a couple of DC's with the Headsets Inc. mod. I have found more
and more I cannot understand incoming communications. I wanted to try the
new Telex 50d but I do not know anyone that has one and I didn't want to pay
just to find out my existing headsets are about the same or better. Also I have
learned, ANR headsets do not do a great job of killing the higher
frequencies in the airplane but do a great job killing lower frequencies.
In searching the web I came across a company that produces an earplug that
has a foam tip inserted in the ear coupled with a transducer about the size of
a peanut. From the transducer housing, a wire runs from each earplug down
thru the notch in the lower part of your ear to a small jack that plugs into
an installed female plug in a modified headset. In my case my passive DC's.
The name of the earplugs is CEP which stands for Communication Ear Plug. They
were developed for the Army helo guys and are in current use with the military.
Last weekend, I flew 9 hours in two days and cannot imagine going back to my
ANR's as stand alone headsets. I will add a plug to be able to wear my
earplugs with my ANR headset help kill lower frequencies. I will test and update
the list on my findings.
On the passive headset with the CEP, noise reduction is around 45db. Yes I
said 45db, the CEP alone reduces cockpit noise by 29.5db if installed in the
ear properly. I could tell in an instant when I didn't have a plug installed
correctly and would reinsert. While enroute, under our hot Texas sun, I
decided to remove my headset to cool down. No problem, I still had the 29.5db
reduction keeping the damaging Yak sounds at bay. Intelligibility? Excellent!
I can now hear my radio communications with no problems and with my radio
volume turned to half the volume I used in the past.
Drawbacks? Sure, installing the plugs is another step along with having the
small cables to the transducers draping under your neck between the two
earplugs. Also, you have to remember to plug in the CEP to the modified headset.
I was amazed that when I opened my mouth, I could hear more noise due to the
CEP killing sound to my ears. I have never in the past had that problem.
Wearing the CEP is not as comfortable as not having anything in your ears
although I didn't find them uncomfortable, just different. The benefits to me
far
outweigh the drawbacks in this case. I will continue to use the CEP in my Yak
and other planes.
Best of all, the total cost was under $150.00.
Bottom line, I believe the CEP is well worth the money to protect my hearing
from further damage and I love being able to hear transmissions with great
intelligibility.
If you have questions contact me off list at _psalter@aol.com_
(mailto:psalter@aol.com) and no, I am not a dealer but a very happy user.

and more I cannot understand incoming communications.

I bought a set of these
http://www.clarityaloft.com/index.htm
When at Oshkosh. This company is the one that has the contract for US
Airforce/Army/Navy helicopter headsets. When at the booth I did not believe
that they would work at all and told the sales woman that I would buy a set
but I would be back to return them in a couple of hours. Well I still have
the and I am just beginning to get past the feeling that something is
missing when I fly :)
No more sweaty ears for me. When I tested them I had to take one out to
truly appreciate how effective they are, awesome kit.
