Just got back from Sanibel Island this weekend. Our properties came out
unscathed, but the island looked like a bomb went off. I've never seen
so many downed tree sin my life.
One interesting note, at the marina their was a Cessna 180 on floats. It
was out of the water on the dry, the marina put their fork lift over the
floats, to hold the plane down. I was completely undamaged.

Can't say the same for Kissimmee (ISM). The eye passed directly over
the airport as a CAT 2. Luckily the southern eye wall fell apart just
after passage. Ranger Jet Center was flattened. Kissimmee Aviation had
one Shorts on its back and two others moved 100 feet. Hangar doors on
the south side of the new Ts by Sheltair were removed from their tracks
and two went 100 yards. None of the airplanes in the Sheltair hangars
were damaged. My CJ faced north and another newly arrived CJ faced
south. His doors have already been re-hung.
My neighborhood experienced the NE eye wall with multiple tonadoes. My
home had light damage to the pool enclosure, roof, sofits, and a gutter.
Two trees had to be removed and one righted (great if it lives). Power
was out only five days. It took two days to clean all the crud out of
the pool. Many of the oak leaves were shreded as the passed (wind
blasted) through the screens. Minor water seepage occured under two
windows and the livinng room sliders (looking for Oriental Rug cleaner).
The roof ridge caps had all the comp material ablated away, but a fourty
year roof really can take 100+ mph winds. Lost only four corners.
Some of my neighbors were not so fortunate. One had every oak lay down.
Others had their pool enclosures twisted into pretzels. A 100 foot
island of vegetation in the pond shifted 500 feet. I saw one Oak in St
Cloud with a five foot base split in half by lightening.
But we were blessed and the folks southwest still need prayers. God
willing it will be another forty years before the next one.

All's well, thank you. Charley passed south of us (30nm). We lost power

I have now flown 30 hours behind the M14P conversion on my CJ, and am one happy
camper...except one thing....I continue to get "spew-age" from my nose case vent
tube. Not a lot, just enough to have to clean up all the time...
This has been a topic before, but just wondering if someone has a good solution
to this... The stock CJ system has the nose case tube open to the atmosphere,
as mine is currently. The -52 arrangement is tied into the whole inverted system...
Craig, didn't you have a foam filter of some sort that you found works?
A line overboard my help some- or is it just going to move the mess to my belly?
Evidently "t"-ing the nose case vent line into the main case vent line doesn't
work so well, as the standard main case vent receives pressure from ram air. This
has caused nose case seal problems?
Thanks for any insights!

Hi Jeff,
I am no M-14 expert but it seems odd to have oil come out of the nose case
vent on a regular basis. It may be normal to see such seepage if you put
her on her back for a few seconds, but should not do so on a regular flight.
I have been putting 'a sock on it' :), meaning a foam sleeve/filter over the
vent pipe - this is not to stop the oil from getting out but more to stop
South Florida critters from getting in while parked. BTW, this sleeve is
nothing more than a Radio Shack microphone sock (medium size). I not sure
"Teeing" the main case to the nose case is a good idea.
I wish I could shed more light on the issue...

I don't know you...and I don't want to know you. But please keep your

about airpanes.
Frank, I know it's of no importance to you, but if this site continues to
be a forum for a few peoples rabid political views, I will cancel my

probably be a victory; but in my mind, it would be another example of a

On the Oil Vent problem, You may want to check the Case pressure, you may
have a blower seal going bad, just a thought, but yes it is not normal.

Jeff,
I don't know if it helps...but on my CJ with the stock 285hp housai I
put a K&N filter on my nose case
breather per Rich Desmond's post in April, 2004, and it works great!
If you are "rolling your own", be careful
NOT to do what I originally did... I took a new sponge thingy for
washing cars, cut it and mounted it on the breather...
I thought enough air blew through it, but in the end it pressurized the
nose case a little and blew oil out the back case vent!!!
VERY MESSY! :)
Since I installed the K&N things have been MUCH cleaner!
Here is Rich's post:

I, and I'm sure some others, read the yak list to keep up to date with info
about the fun aircraft we fly, not to read party activists plugging their
political beliefs. If I wanted to read that, I'd go to a political website.
I hope this is not going to increase as we get closer to elections?
I want to learn more about planes, not politicians........

Next issue will have a Yak / CJ article in it.
The Editor is a friend (T6 & Be18 owner) doing this for the glory of warbirds.
He is also a big fan of the Yak/CJs and wants us to be a big part of the magazine.
If you've got nothing else to do with $30 bucks, go to the website and subscribe
like I just did.

Noting Mark Bitterlich's offer of a 2-blade prop hub, I am interested to
know where he might be able to find "new blades."
I can say that we have fourteen hubs, but no blades for them, and I am sure
this will become an increasing problem, since the hubs are durable, but
blades hit the ground; de-laminate etc!

I sent mine to Whirlwind. It had a chinker out of the leading edge, about the
size of a silver dollar if I remember correctly. They can't "fix" one, just redo
already basically good blades. So, someone out there is sitting on a hub
and single blade of mine...somewhere. Rick

Mark;
I've seen firsthand some of the rebuilds that Whirlwind does on the
Vperiod prop. They have to be THE best, rebuilt prop I've seen on the
YAK. When my prop needs a rebuild that's where I'm sending mine.
While were on the subject, I've often thought of making my own props out
of Kevlar fiber. Kevlar has lighter weight and higher tensile strength
than even carbon fiber. Imagine the abrasion resistance possible using
Kevlar. I have a friend who has a prop replicating machine. Put a blank
in one side and the original in the other, turn the machine on and out
comes a replica blade. Considering I may be working with Kevlar I may
have to use a mold though. Any thoughts?

October SkyFest 2004 Update:
Fellow Yakers,
We are quickly approaching Skyfest 2004. I want to remind everyone of the event
and provide some details.
Dates: September 30, Oct 1-3, 2004
Where: Jackson, TN (MKL) about 60 NM northeast of Memphis.
Here again is the deal: SkyFest 2004 will provide rooms and discounted fuel for
us to have an RPA Mass Formation clinic, if we provide mass formation flyovers
for their SkyFest 2004 airshow (Saturday and Sunday.)
Skyfest will comp us up to 20 rooms for the clinic and the show. Practice fuel
will be discounted significantly ($0.50 per gallon) and fuel for the show will
be compd, as will smoke oil. They will provide transportation.
This show will be conducted in waivered airspace. This means we need FAST current
and qualified pilots for the show. To take advantage of the rooms, and fuel
deal, you need to be at least a commercial rated pilot.
Free rooms, cheap formation flying, airshow exposure, and hanging with your buds
this should prove to be an all around great time! AND our own Team Red Yak Formation
Airshow Team will be performing too- they do a great job...you wont want
to miss them!
We will plan to practice Thursday and Friday, then fly in the show Saturday and
Sunday. Note that there will be no FAST basic formation training at this event.
There may be limited availability for FAST checkrides on Thursday. Our primary
goal is to provide a professional quality airshow performance, so that we
might set a precedent for other shows to NEED us!
We have 15 pilots already interested in attending, so if youd like to join us,
please let me know ASAP!
If youve already shown interest, would you please drop me a line again to confirm?
Thankslooking forward to flying with you all!
