Keep me informed. I have talked to Jill and Carl about new canopies. They
only cost about $200 per canopy. The issue is the cost of installing them.
You would not believe what that cost. I am going to try and install them
next year. I have talked to several people that have tried to install them
there self and have horror stories. I talk to another man in Nevada that
tells me isn't a big deal. I am very interested in what you discover.

I need to replace the canopies on my Yak-52 and am trying to decide on
Clear, Tinted or Smoked. I will probably be doing 20-30% of my flying at
night. Will the Tinted or smoked will interfer with night vision?
Additionally I would like to get the canopies in the Malcom Style. I will
probably have the canopies manufactured myself to get what I want.

Well, yet another hurricane threatens. Hurricane Frances will be
passing North of St. Thomas far enough that we probably won't really
notice other than a little rain and a reversal of the prevailing winds.
OTOH, Frances, now a category 4 storm with a chance to become cat-5,
is going to plaster the Turks & Caicos and probably much of the
Bahamas. My guess is that somewhere on the East coast of Florida is
going to get a pasting as well.
So if any of you in Florida want to make a quick flight down here to
get behind the storm I will be happy to put you up and take you
sailing.

Mrs Price,
Frank, replaced his about two years ago. Has problems (Minor) closing his canopies.
The problem is that his new canopies were thinner then his originals, which
caused the frame to warp slightly.
I plan on finding the same thickness plastic or lexan to make the canopies out
of.
I will let you know how things turn out.
Thanks

Thanks. Aubrey sounds like a woman's name, but I can't pass the physical.
Everyone I have talked to tells me to make a jig that fits the old canopy.
They tell me that you can't close the new one, or the glass breaks when you
do ,because it warps. I look forward to seeing your results.

Any idea if the M14P exhaust nuts are slightly larger...might someone have a use

Well that's useful enough. Together with removal of inverters etc. that
should make a difference to weight, and help to compensate cg issue

Jorgen,
I calculated 25lb savings based the B&C 35amp unit and on the removal of
the CJ6 stock engine's (285 hp) generator, regulator, 'wave filter' etc.
Although it is a respectable weight reduction on the nose, it does not
have a substantial impact on the CG (CJ-6). It will however give you
lots of needed access room in the upper back end of the engine - this is
particularly nice if you firewall area is tight as in the Yak-52.

Frank,
Don't know the total Amp draw of a Yak-52 or a CJ-6 but I can tell you
that I've been flying my M-14P CJ6 with the B&C 35 Amp Alternator for
over 4 years without a problem. 35 amps will do the job plenty for the
CJ electrical system, inverters and all. I believe B&C now makes a 50
amp model as well. Good product, good weight saver, excellent " firewall
extra space maker" and expensive somewhat.

Yakinators;
I'm wanting to install the B&C alternator and regulator. Looks to be a
big weight savings and with no commutator brushes to worry about looks
like it should last almost forever. Only problem is I'm not sure which
model to get. What is the max current draw with everything lit up and
running in the 52? Thanks in Advance Frank YAK-52 N9110M

Subject: Yak-List: politics and other meta-issues
--> Yak-List message posted by: Brian Lloyd <brianl@lloyd.com>
There are a number of things that affect our flying and are therefore
reasonable fodder for discussion. There is no question that maintenance
and training issues are absolutely appropriate.
But there are valid political issues as well. When a government issues
regulations it affects our ability to fly. To my mind it seems
reasonable to discuss actions on the part of government employees and
officials that result in hardship or even safety-of-flight issues for
the pilot.
But once you get into the political realm it is easy to cross over into
an area that is inappropriate. Much of what has happened to restrict
our flying in the last three years in the US has been as a result of
stupid, unthinking actions on the part of governmental officials in
response to the events on Sept 11, 2001, so it is easy to somehow
connect the actions of the terrorists with the affect on our flying even
tho' there is no direct connection. This leads to people blaming the
terrorists for our problems when the immediate problem is inappropriate
reaction on the part of the government.
OK, so I know how we got here. How do we get away from it again and
focus on just those aspects of the political that are appropriate to
flight?

Giday, Brian. I don't know what the pieces are worth and I don't even know what
they are from but I'm guessing M14P if it has a slightly larger exhaust nut size
than
the Housai. I don't even know how the M14's exhaust is configured but the six
pieces include two 90's which are almost identical, two t's which are not identical
and two end pieces, one of which is not in as good as shape as the other.
Can anyone on the list offer up a schematic of the Housai and M14P exhaust systems?
Thanks..

Also takes me about 120 hours to replace CJ canopy glass. So far have only
used glass supplied by Doug., no experience with other suppliers.
In service cracking is a function of how the loads are transmitted to the
glass. The Chinese do a lousy job here (which is the reason most need
replacement) by very poor fitting.
I replace rivets with 4-40 screws & nuts except where both sides need to be
flush and use a bushing to carry the screw or rivet compression load. Takes
a while to make hundreds of tiny bushings. The hole in the glass has to be
larger than the bushing and concentric with it avoid localized stress.
Easier said than done but worth the effort - there will be no cracking.

Try an oil engine dye and a black light. That's what is used in auto shops
to find oil, trans and coolant leaks.

Is there any other way to fly it? :-) Don't normally hold negative for
long periods though, typically just go negative as part of e.g. slow
roll. Did do lots of inverted the other day tho, also inverted spin.
Am I right in assuming the only place oil gets vented is that big pipe
on the RHS, sticking out behind the cowl? The residue from that I can
live with, although it would be nice to contain that somehow.
I have oil on the belly, both wing roots, the fuselage side, in the
engine compartment, on the prop backplate, etc. Seems there is a leak
or leaks somewhere, I suspect one or more of the pipes carrying oil to &
from the engine.

I believe Snap-on has it on their trucks and a good parts store may have it.
I don't remember the brand I had in my stores. I have also seen it at most

The best fitting CJ6 glass I have sold and installed myself is produced by LP
Aero Plastics Inc., Jeannette Penn.Sold many sets for them including to Australia
with no complaints.
Their sets require little or no trimming and come in two grades of tint or clear.

Flour. It's cheap. Hose the engine down with Stoddards. Let it dry. Then
fling regular flour on suspect areas. Run the engine. Voila' leaks show up.
Old trick from cheap bastard.

Ok...
First..
After talking with at least 6 different people. I have gotten 6 different
answers. I have an '82 Yak-52. Approx 400 hrs on engine. There is mineral
oil in it today. What is the 'Lists' views on running straight mineral oil
vs. multi or straight wt.
Second..
I need a check out in my Yak. The conditional inspection will be done this
week. Its finally going to fly. I am a regular flier. I own a flight school
and charter company. I have 600+ hrs and I have been lately just flying my
Baron 58. So anyone that can help. I would appreciate it. Located
Cincinnati, OH.
Third and final...
We are having an airshow at Lunken Airport, Cincinnati, OH on Sept.11&12. If
anyone is interested in flying in, I will buy you a steak dinner and will
top your Yak or CJ off for return trip. Yes Steve and Donna, who were
already coming to the airshow, you are also included. It would be nice to
have as many as we can get. I know Danny Piles is planning on attending.
What I am shooting for is to get everyone together and maybe, just maybe,
start an annual event here in Cincinnati.
Yak Daddy,
Mark Morgan

Add Another Morgan. Jay Hodge just bought Tom Johnson's Yak-52 and will be
deadheading out with Brett Hunter to get it.

the more the merrier. There is a large following of war birds in Cincinnati.
I think the airshow makes for a great venue to get together and the Sky
Galley has a great steak.

Leaks from the valve cover gaskets are notoriously hard to find. I'd
look there first or try replacing all them.
On another note. If you washed the engine be sure and check your plug
wires. The M14 harness has an outer rubber covering over the braided
shield of each cable. This rubber covering (really a hose cut to length)
is perfect for trapping water and holding it so well it'll never dry
out. I had endless ignition problems until I rebuilt the harness and
found all the trapped water there. I removed the rubber covering and now
use it only in places where there is an abrasion potential.

Hi All
Anyone have any tricks to find oil leaks? Spent hours washing down the
plane today - oil in engine compartment, on belly, wing root, sides,
etc.
No major leaks, but there are obviously some which I cannot find - is
there anything one can use to make it easier to find?
Jorgen
