Crap. Tropical Storm Ivan just appeared yesterday. They are already
talking about it possibly strengthening to cat 4. It looks like it may
pass south of us about 120 mi but that just means we are pretty well in
the line of fire.
I feel like I am standing at the wrong end of a shooting gallery.
Good luck to those of you in Florida. I hope you have completed your
preparations.

Dear John
Yak-55 Gear
I am sorry that I gave the impression that one could not/should not use a 2.6 metre
prop on a Yak-55. The main points are:
a.. A small point but I think the Whirlwhind is somewhat less than 260cm.
b.. The 260cm prop will give noticeably better low-speed acceleration and rate
of climb at the expense of a slight loss in maximum/cruising speed.
c.. For an aircraft that has good undercarriages (i.e. not sagged); operating
off tarmac runways; always landed and taken-off in the 3-point attitude, no problem
to have a 260cm.
d.. If however you operate on rougher grass airfields; the undercarriage is sagging
a bit; the tyres are slightly under-inflated, all I am saying is that you
are likely to have a problem!

I had the Whirlwind 260 on my CJ. Agree that it took off like a bat out of hell,
and never had ground clearance problems (but stayed well away from ditches
and tall grass). The problem was not with the length but with Whirlwind. When
I sustained prop damage from hail last year, I called the folks at Whirlwind
for support. They told me flatly that the prop was "obsolete" and that they
would not service it or provide parts for it. So, I had American Propeller in
Redding, CA do an overhaul, cut it down by three inches a blade, and now it graces
Doug Sapp's CJ-5 with the big 320 HP M14-B(?). And that plane will really
get your heart going.
