We just got a little rain, and a max gust of 28 MPH, but we're still 12 hours from the real fun. I've got 2 3000 lbs tow straps securing the center of my doors to stell eyes secured into my apron on both hangar doors to help prevent them from blowing in, other than that, not much more I can do. Just spent 2 days shoveling mulch :) My wife decided to have a huge load delivered and dumped on my lawn..... my aching back. The latest forcast says the rain and wind should start for us in about 6 hours and wont let up untill Monday afternoon, dumping over 20" of rain. I wonder how well a CJ or L-29 will do on floats. Yeah, the bad side. That is where the rotational velocity combines with the forward motion to make the winds stronger. > We just got a little rain, and a max gust of 28 MPH, > but we're still 12 hours from the real fun. I finally have a good place for the boat to ride it out and am prepared to fly the Comanche out early Wednesday morning. I plan to give some recurring training to the woman who owns the Cherokee 180 we are using so she will feel more comfortable flying it out by herself. We will probably make it a flight of two. The track for Ivan was, at one point, looking to be less than a degree S of us. That would clobber St. Croix big-time and give us a nasty ride. But today's projected track now has it about 3 degrees south of us which makes me a bit more comfortable. Fingers crossed for everyone! No. Drunk drivers kill many more people than that. There are 48,000 deaths every year due to automobile accidents in the US and alcohol figures in 50% of them. So let's just say that drunk drivers only kill 20,000 *per* *year*. Let's see: 20,000 killed annually by drunks and 3,000 killed once by terrorists. How many people have been killed in terrorist attacks around the world in the last 10 years and how many have been killed by drunks? Well, the drunks have killed 200,000 in the US in that time (I don't know the figures for the rest of the world). The terrorists are not even in the same league! Those terrorists are going to have to work pretty hard to make it into the major leagues! Let me put this in aviation terms. This is like the guy who obsesses over engine failure so much but forgets that the thing that is most likely to bring him down is improper flight planning and fuel starvation. Engines certainly do fail but more people die from just running out of gas. We can save many more lives by getting people to just do proper flight planning rather than obsessing over accessory drive gear attach bolts. Terrorism is terrible. Loss of life of any kind is terrible. But you still have to play the odds. The odds are much more in favor of me dying at the hands of a drunk than at the hands of a terrorist. "Dying by drunk" may not be as dramatic but it is still a greater threat. On another point, what would happen if the government declared war on drunk drivers? It would cost less and it would save many more lives than the War on Terrorism. And speaking of wars on things, how about the War on Drugs? Over 300 *billion* dollars have been spent on that and I can still go out and buy any drug I want in any city in the US. I wonder if the war on terrorism will be as successful? Don't worry I'm not going to try to sell you anything that supposedly makes any of your body parts larger (or smaller) and this product is directly aviation related :) I'm just an airplane builder, owner, pilot, and aviation nut who wants to tell you where you can find more information about a great new product. I've been selling kits of vortex generators (VG's) for only $95 and my customers are telling me they really like the performance gains they're seeing. VG's are great for reducing stall speeds and allow you to land slower, shorter, and safer. I invite you to check out my site at www.landshorter.com and see what you think. My VG's can be quickly installed for testing using removable double-stick tape and come with a 100% money-back guarantee so why not try them out on your plane? You'll be really glad you did :) Thanks and let's keep 'em flying! I'm up in Long Island, NY. My wife (God bless her) is holding down the fort at FD44. As of talking with her at 1900L, still lots of rain and wind. I "may have water in my hangar". Some trees are down and they lost power just before noon. Highest wind gust I've seen reported was 62kts at DAB. ________________________________ Message 8 _____________________________________ Time: 04:36:45 PM PST US From: "Frank Haertlein" Subject: Yak-List: NBC --> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" Bryan Why not keep the political dribble in the byline or within your characteristic signature with a link as I suggested. But many more than that die from heart attacks and stroke due to eating McDonald's hamburgers and other fatty foods. Fatty foods are a bigger killer than drinkers. What about sex? Do you know how many people die of AIDS each year? So, what are you gonna do, proclaim that it is unlawful to eat beef or other fatty foods as it will save more lives? You gonna make sex illegal? Your attitude would tell us to screw the terrorist threat. Of course they may kill a few hundred children here and there, they may run into the skyscrapers once in awhile, they may seek nuclear weapons to destroy you with or they may poison your food supplies with cancer causing chemicals but then, as you say, they really aren't that big a threat, right? In addition, I think, that as a responsible citizen, you should stop flying. It will save countless lives because others don't have to support your excess life style. Your excess life style has a harmful effect on the environment and it results in increased deaths from environmental factors that you unwittingly contribute to. Do you realize the insidious nature of the chemicals used to maintain your automobile and airplane and the harm those have on the environment and our health? Do you have any concept of the depletion of our natural resources that occurs just so that you have a home to live in? In fact, if you really are a responsible citizen who understands the human condition and the possible harm that your existence could cause the greater society and the environment, then you do well to put a gun to your head and pull the trigger. We would all be better off and have more freedom as a result. :) ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 10:25:22 PM PST US From: Brian Lloyd Subject: Yak-List: Not quite political drivel --> Yak-List message posted by: Brian Lloyd On Sep 5, 2004, at 7:36 PM, Frank Haertlein wrote: > --> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" > > Why not keep the political dribble in the byline or within your > characteristic signature with a link as I suggested. After all, we > don't > want to piss off list participants with unrelated, political dribble. Uh, I think the word you wanted was "drivel". The word "dribble" suggests either basketball or incontinence to me. Vocabulary aside, boy are you good at missing the point. The point has to do with risk analysis and return on resources invested. The terrorist thing is a meta issue and is orthogonal to the point. The point is that the government has decided that it is in the protection business and is going to spend my money on "protecting" me. If it insists on doing so and I cannot stop it from doing so, I want it to at least do so where I get the most bang for my buck. We see this is all areas but it impinges on flying in a couple of areas: 1. protecting me from terrorists and its effect on my ability to fly when and where I want to fly; 2. the FAA protecting me from something (I am not sure what but they sure seem to think they need to do so). > > Bryan, By the way, if you look at the bottom of every message I send you will see that I sign my name "Brian Lloyd." My first name is "Brian" not "Bryan". But you seem to have a penchant for getting it wrong. > All those deaths from drinking?....... Do you know how many people die of AIDS each year? Good. We seem to agree on something. There are a lot of potential threats to life out there besides terrorists. > So, what are you gonna do, proclaim that it is unlawful to eat beef or > other fatty foods as it will save more lives? You gonna make sex > illegal? No, absolutely not. I think people should be able to do whatever they want to do. Wanna have unprotected sex? OK. Oh, you got the HIV and now you have AIDS? Not my problem that you are stupid. Want to eat until you are an obese pig? No problem. Just don't expect a lot of sympathy from me when you have a heart attack. Wanna go out and fly your airplane without doing maintenance on it and without getting proper training? Fine by me. You will be a self-correcting problem. (Unfortunately you will probably ruin a perfectly good airplane in the process and that is a sin in my book.) The only real problem with the latter is that it makes the FAA start doing more stupid things and it makes my insurance rates go up. Those are the only reasons I would want to try to get a pilot to modify his/her behavior because then it affects me. And that is the point. I don't *WANT* the government to protect me because they do such a bad job of it! Give me back my money and let me protect myself. I will do a much better job and I will spend a LOT less money along the way. > Your attitude would tell us to screw the terrorist threat. Of course > they may kill a few hundred children here and there, they may run into > the skyscrapers once in awhile, they may seek nuclear weapons to > destroy > you with or they may poison your food supplies with cancer causing > chemicals but then, as you say, they really aren't that big a threat, > right? Based on a dispassionate analysis of the statistics, that is *exactly* what I am saying. My life is less threatened by terrorists than by heart disease, drunk drivers, or even a failure of a part in my airplane. You can load your comment up with emotional rhetoric (I thought the comment about children was a nice touch) but it doesn't change the facts. The US government will spend a huge amount of money on "protecting" us from terrorists. The US government *HAS* spent a huge amount of money stopping drugs from getting into this country. I can still buy all the cocaine and heroin I want in spite of the government's best efforts. OK, let's substitute anthrax and plutonium for cocaine and heroin. What makes you think that the government will do any better with terrorists and their materials? The problem is, in the process of not protecting me they are making it much more difficult to fly. How about the stupidity of closing an airshow because of a baseball game? They couldn't let well-known airshow pilots fly because they were a threat? Cut me a break. And in keeping this on an aviation level, please tell me how what anything the FAA does makes flying safer? Any pilot with half a brain takes care of his/her airplane and does whatever he/she can to stay alive while flying. The FAA doesn't add anything to the process except making it more difficult to actually improve the breed to make things safer. I remember the olden days when the guys at the GADO (now FSDO) were pilots and mechanics who really were trying to disseminate information and help other pilots and mechanics fly better and more safely. Now they are just pencil pushers for whom the letter of the law is god and the spirit of the law need not apply. We are lucky. We fly "experimental" aircraft. We are free to make changes that will make our aircraft safer. We find a problem and we fix it. This list is great for that. Look at the issue of FOD affecting the flight controls of Yak-52s and how the people on this list worked out and implemented a solution. If we were dealing with a certified airplane the fleet would have been grounded while the FAA worked out a solution that would have cost about $20,000 per aircraft and taken two years to approve ... and still wouldn't have fixed the problem! Compare Yak-52 FOD problem to T-34 "spar problem." Need I say more? > In addition, I think, that as a responsible citizen, you should stop > flying. We would all be better off and have > more freedom as a result. Clearly you don't get it and now you are just being stupid. Let me rephrase that: you are being a stupid ass. Let me try to explain one more time using small words. I don't want the government to do anything. Not the EPA, DOT, FAA, TSA, DHS, FBI, CIA, BATF, HHS, DOE -- not any part of the government. They do such a bad job of almost everything they attempt that I think we would be better off if they didn't try. The guys from NBC who were playing terrorist were stopped because real people used their heads, not because the government did anything. It was individuals exercising their own initiative. It was individuals who stopped the last aircraft on Sept. 9, 2001 from hurting anyone else, not the government. I would rather trust to my fellow citizens than to my government. Also, getting back to the issue of risks and threats, I still hold that terrorists are less of a threat to me than the thousands of drunk drivers on the road. Since the government has decided (certainly against my will) that it is going to protect me, at least it could try to protect me from something that is really likely to kill me and stop violating the Bill of Rights in the process.
