Well, we actually put 9 airplanes (4 Yak 52's), two golf carts and a Porsche
in the hanger. Never thought that was possible. Some of the airplanes at
our airport (Wetumpka, 08A) didn't make it into a hanger. So we're praying
they survive. As far as everything else goes, we're as prepared as can
possibly be. Flooding will be the primary problem I think. But the winds
are suppose to be somewhere between 50 and 70 MPH here in the Montgomery, AL
area with gusts to 80. Both of my brothers and their families evacuated
Baldwin County which is the county on the eastern shore of Mobile bay where
the eye went directly over early this morning. One of my brothers went to
Birmingham to be with his mother-in-law and the other is here with us.
Right now we're under a tornado warning with tornados touching down in the
eastern part of our county. According to some folks that I spoke with along
the Gulf coast, Pensacola got hit pretty badly. Tomorrow we'll do damage
control. Say a prayer for all of us.
Thanks,
Dennis

Craig;
I'd like to fly into Reno and put my YAK on static display. Do you know
the procedure for doing this? I can't seem to find anything on the Reno
air-race website that explains how to go about this.
Thanks

The guides/ covers were the very first thing that happened to new a/c as
they were delivered from the factory!! Years ago I had a new a/c from RO and
an LY mechanic would not even fly in the a/c till it was done!. We have
never found an a/c in the Ukraine or Russia that had the cable guides
installed in either cockpit of the YAK 52.
I believe this has caused accidents in USSR where the rudder jammed. Was
this the cause of the SU29 accident in LY earlier in the year?

Yak 52: Rudder Cable Guides
There has been renewed interest in this topic because of the safety
implications.
As produced, 52 rudder cables run in guides attached to the floor of the
aircraft. It was found that there is the possibility, if the pilot or the
passenger has a substantial heel on their shoe, it can happen that the heel
is trapped between the rudder pedal and the beginning of the guide.
For some reason no formal AD/SB was issued for this, but in case your
aircraft has not had these guides removed, I strongly recommend that you do!

There was an AD (equivalent) issued by the design bureau requiring the
complete removal of the rudder cable covers on all Yak 50s.
There was an AD or SB (equivalent) issued by the bureau affecting the covers
in all Yak 52s. This required that the cable covers be shortened somewhat
and that an angle (45 degree?) sloping rearward be cut in the front of the
covers in both cockpits.
I don't have numbers of these items, their dates of issue, or text at hand
right now, but I will post this info. on Monday or Tuesday.

I see others have replied but I will add my $0.02 in here too.
You cannot center-tap your 12V batteries without some sort of
equalizer. You will kill them in very short order. Your choice is to
either install an equalizer or a 28V-to-14V converter. I prefer the
equalizer because, if it fails, you still have 14V from the center tap
of the batteries to power your 12V devices, certainly long enough to
get on the ground and fix it. If if you use a converter and it fails
you lose your 14V buss.
And as David Laird said, check your W&B. You may want to put bigger
batteries in there just to keep the W&B correct.

I know I piss you off Frank, but when it comes to electrical systems,
politics doesn't enter into it and I really do know what I am talking
about.
The problem with center tapping the batteries for your 14V loads is
that the load draws down the lower battery which causes the upper
battery to overcharge. Both batteries will then fail in short order,
usually with the upper battery failing first. Trying to keep them
charged up will just cause the upper battery to fail more quickly.
Don't believe me? Ask Dennis Nickson. He used the center tap and
destroyed two perfectly good sealed batteries in about 2 months.
There is a device specifically to solve this problem. It is called a
battery equalizer. It is a 28V to 14V converter that works by setting
the 14V output to be exactly 1/2 of the 28V input. This keeps the
charge on the batteries exactly equal. Now if you center tap your
batteries to power your 14V loads, the equalizer will carry the load
and keep the batteries equally charged. If the equalizer fails you
will still have the juice in the lower battery but the two batteries
will start to take an uneven charge will will quickly destroy them.
I have found Surepower to be about the best source of battery
equalizers. See: http://www.surepower.com/
I have one of their 80A units in my boat to provide for my 14V loads
from the center tap of my 500AH 24V battery bank. It works wonderfully
and even deals with the slight difference in capacity between my
batteries.
