Yes, if one cylinder was significantly different from the others, then of course one could assume the connecting rod on that cylinder was bent. From the manual: #4 - 130.0 mm #3 & #5 - 130.15 mm #2 & #6 - 130.23 mm #8 & #9 - 130.39 mm #1 & #7 - 130.25 mm Dennis ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gus Fraser" Subject: RE: Yak-List: Yak down > --> Yak-List message posted by: "Gus Fraser" > > Sounds like cylinder 5 becoming a bullet. These are the rods that take about 150 hours to fail. If a lock occurs, another method is to pull each of the jugs and lay up a metal straight edge on each rod. Hydraulic lock CAN occur even after pulling through and during startup when a pool of oil is sucked in from the intake tube into the cyl. This is the reason for draining the tubes AND pulling through. If you hear a loud "CHUFF" on startup shut down and check for oil spray being thrown back from one stack. Yes the engine may sound just fine and fly OK for many hours. Then one day.... Many MANY agencies and even groups of people who would otherwise have been laughed at....... have gained power and credibility since 9-11. That date is now used as an excuse by JUST TOO MANY PEOPLE as a reason to curtail what might have otherwise been considered a normal freedom or "right". I digress from the original subject of Hanger Nazi's..... so please accept my apology in advance. Yet.... although not a YAK topic... it does indeed impact us all as pilots. It seems that more and more people are beginning to question anything and everything we do with light aircraft and now..... the wrong people are paying attention to all of it (The FAA, lawyers, courts, the general public). We are told to be more careful, to make less noise, to move our aerobatic practice areas on a regular basis, to allow anyone with a name badge to enter and search our hangers, soon we will be required to have special I.D. to fly an airplane.... what's next, a BACKGROUND CHECK for heavens sake? As pilots and aircraft owners, I question whether it is the best policy for us to "get along and go with the flow". At some point it might be better to stand up and saw "WTFO". After 9/11 it became an issue of national security... The Customs department tried three times to get shootdown authority for civil aircraft (suspected drug smugglers) unsucessfully. After 9/11... A comparison of the firing end shows different geometry for the insulator and shell. This does not necessarily confirm a different heat range but indicates it is likely. One would need to section or x-ray each type to compare the actual heat path for confirmation. I know of at least two operators running the DZ5 plug in the M14P with no indication of a problem so far. There are probably many others who may want to comment.
