The only place I have seen a soapbox is in an antique store.
However in the interest of free speech I can offer Replica
Soapboxes for $100 ea + S&H.
For speeches of less serious content I have OSHA approved
2-step ladders for 49.95 + S&H. "Soapboxes" for satire and
light comedy look a lot like plastic pails turned upside
down (non-OSHA approved) but only cost 12.95 + S&H.
Now for fellow listers who freely vent their dribble in long
columns...I can offer a "Virtual Soapbox". For a small
PayPal transfer of $3.99 to my account, I *promise* to
actually read your diatribes and auto-reply to the list with
one genuine "Atta Boy!" per missive. Please identify your
post by subject line and date in the PayPal transfer.

Yak 18Ts Across the Atlantic
9-hours is actually quite easy, and indeed we have sold several aeroplanes in this
configuration - an extra 160-litres in the wings and a 130-litre tank in the
baggage bay.
No problem to put a lot more in the rear seat area, but I suspect you would begin
to run out of oil unless you sorted that out as well.
The Russians did fly two 18Ts around the world about 15-years ago. From my point
of view it is an awful lot of unfriendly cold water!

Bottom line this isnt a chat line, its a list for the discussion of Yak, and
CJ aircraft. Conversations may go off topic once and a while, but generally
speaking they're quite benign and good humored. Outright political banter of
the type that you seemingly can be quite prolific at, tends to be the norm
with you. Not your typical one liner like "You can thank Bush for my torqued
nuts" or "Kerry really bends my spar" but long winded diatribes about my
freedoms and how some new medicaid bill is going to eventually affect my
right to wipe my ass eventually leading to the cockpit of my airplane
smellling like shit.
If I really wanted to read about politically or racially charge opinions
from people I dont even know, I'd watch Crossfire on CNN or the Fox news
channel. neither of which I do. I dont wear camoflage, stock up on MRE's and
dont clean my guns all day reading survialist magazines.
You may say that deleting unwanted emails is the same as choosing not to
listen but take this scenario. I have a wireless GPRS modem on my laptop
which I use a lot when on the road. It takes a long time to download all my
email, of which I receive a lot, if this list is 75% garbage (to me at
least) then I have just had to suffer the download time of all these
messages that I have to delete, and because my email server is MAPI it means
that the deletes take almost as long as the downloads in the first place.
Every plane post is of interest to me, I learn a lot here. There are some
real gems on this list, its unfortunate that we have to wade through all
this crap just so I can have access to those few posts. I guess its like TV,
if you want to watch the show you gotta put up with the commercials.
I posted the yak-list policy for a reason. You may disagree with me, but the
rules are quite clear.

Well, gee, if you don't know I guess it really isn't my place to tell
you. Usually it happens spontaneously when they learn to fly.

I grew up driving a pickup truck so that is my preferred vehicle. I
did own a Lotus Europa S2 for awhile. That was a fun little car.

Huh. Are you like me and have changed from thinking that Mr. Policeman
is Your Friend, you know, the thing they used to teach kids in school
back in the '50s and early '60s, to now thinking that the Police,
likely as not, abuse their power? After my older kids got hit with
some bogus busts and blatant entrapment I have had to teach them that
the police are not your friends and to not tell them anything without a
parent or lawyer present. The rules are simple: be polite, do not be
argumentative, identify yourself if asked, and do not answer any other
questions without a lawyer or parent present even if they threaten to
arrest you.

Hey, I am down here and anyone who loves airplanes and likes to fly is
alright with me, even Frank. ;-) Come visit and I will try to make
your visit pleasant and memorable. Flying down here has a completely
different flavor. It is mostly business with very little flying for
fun and hanging out at the airport for the heck of it. I really miss
that.

I hear you Ernie.
The thing that hit home for me happened the other day while I was on
the phone to my girlfriend. She got really quiet for awhile and then
said she had to go. I coaxed her into telling me why and she said, "I
get tired of your rants. They accomplish nothing and they make me
uncomfortable. They may work for your father but they do nothing for
you."
I got the message.

Hello Yak Listers,
I've received a few complaints from a number of Yak Listers regarding the
political commentary that has been on the list lately. Please be advised
that the Yak-List is just that - A Yak List (and CJ's too). Members sign
up for this list to discuss the topic of Yaks and CJs. Please review the
snippet below from the Yak-List Usage Guidelines as is quite germane to
this issue.
Now let's get back to those Yak/CJ discussions!

I have been watching the Yak List banter back and
forth about various topics trying to learn about the
aircraft. I have a few questions about CJs and YAKs.
I have a few hours in T-34s and 140s, Is it a hard
transition to a YAK/CJ?
What kind of insurance rate would a low time pilot
expect in a CJ or 52?
I see some serious maintenance talk sometimes, Do YAKs
spend a lot of time hard down on the ramp? Not
counting any out of the ordinary major maintenance
problems, What is a ballpark number for maintenance
cost per year?
Can somebody who owns a Yak 18 in the USA contact me
off list for some questions?
What are the current restrictions on operating
CJ/YAKs?
Thanks

Not at all. If you can fly a T-34 you can almost hop in and fly away
in a CJ6A. My experience is that the Yak-52 is almost the same.
Still, you should plan on 5-10 hours of transition training (including
ground school) to learn the aircraft systems and about operating a
radial engine if you are not familiar.
> What kind of insurance rate would a low time pilot

For that you should get an answer from Tom Johnson. He is on this list
and will provide you with insurance information.

No, they do not have lots of down time. My CJ6A was the most reliable
aircraft I have ever owned with a dispatch reliability approaching
100%. I would change the oil, service the plugs, adjust the valves,
and fly the hell out of it. I got 4 years and 750 hours with nothing
more than routine maintenance. OTOH, I did fly the airplane every day
or two. It did not sit more than about three days in a row without
being flown and that seems to help a lot with any airplane.
Still, like every aircraft, things do break. When they do, we talk
about it here.
I would budget something like $1500/year for maintenance and
inspections. It may be more and it may be less but that is a good
ballpark number for just starting out.

Gizmo,
Please see my comments below (Yak 52 centric as that is what I do):-
>I have a few hours in T-34s and 140s, Is it a hard

This is a primary trainer in Russia (Yak 52) If are of the persuasion that
those things down there move the flippy thing at the back and are not, in
fact, foot rests you will be fine.
>What kind of insurance rate would a low time pilot

$2G and change
>I see some serious maintenance talk sometimes, Do YAKs
>spend a lot of time hard down on the ramp? Not

You have to understand that what you see on this list is a boiled down set
of problems, people very rarely contact the list to say that "Hey the birds
running just great"
Oh, BTW the birds running just great :)
They are as good, or bad, as any other type in my 9 years experience.
>Can somebody who owns a Yak 18 in the USA contact me
>off list for some questions?
I flew one of these once, an original 100% Russian one, kind of feels like
flying a Wellington bomber
>What are the current restrictions on operating
>CJ/YAKs?
Fly for three reasons
1. Exhibition
2. Maintenance
3. PROFICIENCY !!!!!!!!!!!
Guess what most flights are done as.
There is a 300nm limit centered around the home field. This is not that much
of a limit as if you intend to go outside this you are just required to
INFORM the FAA, you do not require permission. When I went to OSH this year
I sent them an email.
Hope this helps
Stop Lurking, good to get back to planes again.
