When I bought my 52, I got it disassembled. Wings were off of it, tail
feathers were off, prop was off and it was 100% Russian. Went through it
with a fine tooth comb. It took me two years of weekend work and
holidays to rebuild it.
During that time I got my complex in a 182 and then a Comanche 250. I
was a 200 hour pilot back then. Just shy of 800 now as I write this. The
first flight in the 52 happened almost to the day I got the airplane 2
years earlier. It was a combination check ride and shake-down flight
with a checkout pilot that had 300+ hours in the 52.
He carefully inspected the plane, gave me some questions about the 52 to
check my knowledge and then we took off (he loved the electric trim I
installed BTW). We spent about an hour above the airport doing a
comprehensive checkout of the aircraft. We landed, did a detailed visual
inspection, refueled the plane and then went back up with me in the
front seat.
We did maybe 30 minutes of touch and goes. I did my very first landing
without his help. After a number of touch and goes he said "you don't
have any problems landing this airplane so I'm gonna sign you off, nice
job on the rebuild too".
The next day I had my five hour Phase I fly-off completed. This all
happened back in December of 02. Been flying it ever since.
If you can fly a complex airplane you'll have no problems with the 52.

Subject: | EAA, AOPA, the YAK LIST and politics. Delete NOW! |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" <yak52driver@earthlink.net>
Ernie, Roger Baker
1. "Why does the EAA exist?"
2. "Why do we have an organization like AOPA"?
3. "What kinds of activities are these two organizations engaged in?"
4. "Why are they important to your right to fly?"
Would you disagree if I said they exist to promote flying, to protect
our rights to fly? Would you disagree if I said they were politically
involved?
Listers, don't read any further. Delete now if you don't care about our
freedom to fly or our right to free
speech...............................................................
I took a look at the history of contributions to the YAK list. The terms
"Ernie", "Roger Baker" and "Frank Haertlein" were researched.
Ernie's posts show a history of postings related to self interest. If it
has anything to do with him or his activities he may just respond with a
question or an opinion. How do I get there? Who is going? Want to burn
some K-1 in my jet? What about me? Aren't I the best? You dooooo like
me, don't you? Etc. Some posts show an eagerness to stomp on list
members because he thinks he can score some kudos' by doing so.
Regarding technical "questions and answers" about our aircraft, I would
rate his contribution as marginal. The overwhelming impression is of a
spoiled rich boy thinking only of himself who relies on the knowledge
and technical experiences of others. Rather than earning it, I suspect
he got his money by inheriting it. A know nothing punk who lives like a
parasite on the accomplishments of others while contributing nothing
himself.
Roger Baker tried to get me banned from the list for my last series of
posts. Two things are certain, he will try getting me banned from the
list again and his contribution to it will continue to be marginal. One
thing in his favor.........he told me he was gonna try and get me banned
from the list. That deserves a measure of respect. Regardless, a review
of his contribution to the list reveals he acts mostly as a moderator,
the moral voice of the list. I couldn't hold a candle to some of his
diatribes.
You can count on him interjecting his opinion at the slightest hint of
any disagreements between list members. You can be assured he will air
the dirty laundry and stuff it in your face. If a discussion doesn't go
the way he thinks you can be assured he will act as our moral voice.
But forget about his regular contribution to the list as regards
technical matters concerning our aircraft. His postings in that regard
are few and far between.
Frank Haertlein's posts are for the most part of a technical nature. Why
do our tires wear out so early? Check out the rudder cable acting as a
saw in your front cockpit. Do you have the same crack in your horizontal
stabilizer? What battery setup do you have in your YAK? Thanks for
taking a potential YAK buyer up for a checkout! Have you seen his links
page created for the benefit of YAK and CJ owners? Have you seen his
articles on YAK propeller balancing? Do you see there is no bias in his
inclusion of various YAK Links on his web page?
http://home.earthlink.net/~yak52driver
Frank Haertlein does on occasion stray from a pure technical discussion
as it relates to YAKs. There are many other discussions that do the
same. But those discussions have, as an underlying principle, the
maintenance of our freedom to fly. Is that so bad? Of course if you
aren't interested in the full spectrum of our rights to fly or don't
understand the big picture, or disagree because of your politics, you
might try and aggrandize yourself by bashing him on the head or even try
to get him banned from the list. But you can NEVER argue against his
technical contribution to the list. Who knows, it may even have saved
some lives!
Ernie, you need to wash your hands after that reach-around grabbing that
brown stuff from your pants. Don't forget to clean the seat in your jet.
Nothing worse than flying around in a jet that smells like shit.
