To be correct the 2 seat 50 is a 52. Y50 early 70's, the 52 late 70's, designs.
Some people incorrectly call the YAK 53 a converted 52 that saw "battle" service.
These a/c were standard 52's with L-29 bomb racks "nailed" to the fuel tank
skins. This modification I belive was done in the field by desperate and ingunative
persons during the first afgan war. The a/c I saw were very poorly "converted"
hence my comment in the field.
BTW, I dont mind the occasional political side swipes, it helps the World paint
a picture of our foreign cousins and thus a broader understanding. Best not get
personal though.

Ok call me neive......Is there really such thing as a Yak-53 or is this a
converted 52???? I thought a single seat 52 was a 50.

Dear Yak-53 owner,
Nice plane,the 53!!
However I noticed on the last picture (cockpit) that U are still using
the old brake handle.
This version with stuff sticking out towards your body is a safety
hazard 'cause it may get cought in your seatbelt/harness assy.
Best replace it by new handle, old one may undo your harness (while
inverted!!)
see also Yak-UK site on this Factory bullentin 53BD

Hey! I like biscuits and gravy! And I didn't land on main street, I
landed on a side road, thank you. Less traffic and it lined up better
with the wind.
As for navigation by ADF, you can't navigate by country stations
anymore. There aren't enough of 'em. You have to navigate either by
the sound of Rush Limbaugh or a Southern Baptist preacher who thinks
the word "Jesus" has four syllables in it. I am currently
experimenting to determine if you can tell the quadrant from the
station by which syllable in "Jesus" (actually, juh-ee-uh-zus) is
accented, kinda like the old Adcock ranges. The results look
promising.

When I went down to the Ford dealer with my wife to pick up my new
pickup truck several years ago (the only vehicle I ever bought new) the
dealer glances at my wife and then with a perfectly straight face says,
"Brian, I sure am sorry but the gun rack didn't come in in time. I
will call you to let you know when it arrives so we can install it."
My wife looks wildly back and forth at the two of us and says, "A gun
rack? You got a gun rack? You're kidding, right?" The dealer and I
(with a great deal of effort) look at her with perfectly straight faces
and answer in the affirmative. She stomps off muttering things like,
"I am *NOT* going to be seen riding around in a &%$*@# pickup truck
with a @(*$%& gun rack ..."

Yesterday Saturday, 1115 local, Presidential TFR effective
around LAL. I working in my hanger at X49, just 4 SM away.
The last of the locals landed just 5 minutes before.
Skydivers down as well. I hear Marine One but never spot
him, I had expected them to use ILS-5, but nope.
1140: single engine aircraft noise somewhere out there.
1145: F-15 goes by at about 2500ft doing 400+ kts. Oops.
Yep, some guy took off from a nearby airport and earned an
"escort".
1200: One of airpark residents takes off. Standard practice
here is to depart on Unicom and switch to LAL ATIS when gear
is up and climb power established. One wide pattern and he
is back, post haste. He got lucky this time, under the
radar.
1315: The skys are back to normal. One minute before, Big
Trouble, one minute later, no problem.
Lesson: During the campaign season, *stuff* happens in a
hurry, be alert.

Hi ya all. I have had my CJ for a few months now, and I am enjoying the hell
out of it. I have been enjoying the posts here as well. Kinda tired of the
political stuff though.
My Question is this, can the plane be flown with the canopy fully open?
Thanx, Frank Surfas

HI all
Matthew, I got my Yak-52 almost exactly a year ago -
it's in for its annual check at the moment. I don't
have a lot of experience, but here's what I can share
about the first year
Transition: I'm a very low time pilot. At the time I
bought my plane I had about 130 hrs total time -
approx 90 hrs on C172s, 20 hrs on Piper Arrow, and
about 20 hours on DH Chipmunk. No real problems on the
conversion. Landing was a bit different, took me an
extra hour or so to get them "right". Still trying to
get them "spot on". ;-)
My own feeling was that the "in air" feeling of the
Yak was that of a heavy, more powerful Chipmunk. On
landing, I found the approach a bit different to what
I was used to, but that it was simply a question of
getting my "eye in". A good instructor helps.
Maintenance: I haven;t done anything other than an
oil-change during the year. I had two incidents with
low oil pressure, which have now been traced to debris
in the oil tank. This has been sorted out during the
annual. During the annual a number of small problems
were identified, but I think that those are long-time
problems that will now be solved.
Insurance rate: I can't really offer any comparisons
between my insurance and yours, since this varies
considerably from country to country. I can tell you
that my insurance dropped by a third for the current
year; my insurance is high because of my low time, and
seems to be coming down as I gain experience.
Hope this helps

I fly with the front canopy open for takeoff and landing all the time.
Lots of noise but better cooling. Rear canopy open plus acro might be asking
for trouble.

I've flown with both canopies open right to the RED LINE. Nothing happened
BUT- I DO NOT ADVISE THIS.
You can open the canopies at normal cruise speeds. When opening the rear
canopy at speed, make SURE you hang on to it and not let it slam back, which it
will do. I removed the wind brake panel that is between the front and rear
cockpit. I found that if I open both canopies at the same time, the GIB gets the
full wind blast. So when I have a photographer in back taking air to air
pictures, I keep my canopy either closed or opened to the first notch.
I usually fly with the front canopy back to the first notch, for cooling and
fresh air. I have flown x country with the canopy full back (it was really
hot) but make sure everything is tied down. :)
