Craig,
This could well be our best SNF YET! This sounds like a GREAT idea... Linedog's
in...
Shane,
I am in for Waycross unless I too am off working for gas money!
Everybody,
After our airshow success at Jackson, it seems we have stirred up some "business".
For planning purposes, we have been invited back to JAckson, TN for next
year (October 2005). Also, thanks to Team Red, we have been requested for a show
in Springfield, IL for a similar Red Star Mass Formation Air Show Act! Put
Sept 17-18, 2005 on your calendars....and one more- the Mid-South Airshow in
Millington, TN is slated for memorial day weekend in May 2005. Stay tuned for
further details... Cheap flying on someone else's nickel...gotta love it...

Troops,
I received this e-mail from Ms Quanhong Fan of Eaglet. I tried to forward
it
in the normal way but, well you saw what happened. Some of you may have
gotten this questionnaire already. I will forward the attachment form to
anyone
who sends me an e-mail requesting it.
___________message ______________________________
Dear Jim,
I sent you that email from my eaglet email address. Maybe you deleted it
because it is not a familiar address?
Right now, we are undertaking applying for the Chinese Airrworthiness
Certificate for Nanchang CJ6. This is the first step for our long march of
applying
FAA, CAA and other air worthiness certificates.
As you are well aware, CJ6 has been used by the Chinese military for more
than forty years. PLA does not require any certification. However, as we
are
endeavored to put CJ6 into civilian market, both home and abroad, we began
to
apply Air worthiness Cerificate from CAAC. Our air worthiness authortiy
(CAAC)
requires that we have sufficient data from CJ6 users to prove the
airworthiness of this type aircraft.
Here attached is the questionaire. Is it possible for to answer the
attached
questionaire an help me to put it to Yak List for more CJ6 owners to answer?
I tried to post this questionaire to Yak List myself but failed. Could you
help?
Please send the signed copy to 86-10-64809690 or email a scanned copy to
fan@eaglet.com.cn. I believe this will benefit all CJ6 users in the long
run.
Thanks in advance.
Best Regards
Fan Quanhong

Yak-List
CJ-6 Questionnaire
Since we in Europe do not have the fantastic advantages of a "experimental" system,
I have been forced to become somewhat of an expert in the whole issue of
certification.
I really cannot see how the reports of, even hundreds, of satisfied users would
help proper certification to FAR 23 standard! Or have I missed something?

Subject: | Chinese Cylinder Torques (what about the M-14?) |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Jay McIntyre" <jayatnowra@hotmail.com>
As always, terminology is a problem. When I said I do are-torque every 100 hours,
I should have really said check-torque. These are two completely different
matters as a re-torque involves backing off the torque and then torquing to the
correct value whereasa check-torque is simply setting the torque wrench to the
desired setting and checking that the required tension is still present.
Walt.... as for the stud configuration... the stud is simply screwed into the crankcase
with no helicoil and no step on the stud.
Anyone out there care to comment on whether the M-14 has this problem, as allfour
Housai's on our field have had this problem. Regular checking of the base studs
is a MUST. In fact, almost everytime we have had excessive oil on the belly
of the aircraft, it has been as a result of the cylinder loosing it's torque,
most commonly as a result of the paper gasket giving up the ghost and blowing
out.
On paper
gaskets.... is anyone operating without any gasket at all? Is it OK to do this?
Will areasonable seal be acheived with the shot-peened surface? (TheWarner
ScarabSB specifically calls for the removal of the gasket and for a groove to
be machined to take an O-ring similar to the Housai, but it's crankcase mating
surface is not shot-peened)

Sounds Good! Do we have anyone (RPA) going to the ICAS
convention? I'll go if we could approach airshow organizers
about hosting us. Is this practicable?
Suggestion: During this year's SNF get together, Lets focus
on Airshow Formation Flying rather than basic FAST training.
Why? Well we are doing more airshows now and it is apparent
that Airshow flying is a step up and demands practice.
What we do different:
- Take off in 3-ships on wide runways with #4 joining in the
slot, going directly to Diamond.
- Split the trailing 4-ship flights into elements that add
on to the flight ahead from front-to-back and then
(carefully) disengage back-to-front.
- In turns, the inside "wing" steps down as usual but the
outside "wing" turns in echelon so that everybody pops out
in formation on rollout.
- Timing, timing, timing and plenty of Situational Awareness
in mass formation changes and keeping tabs on the number of
passes and overall configuration.
- Change energy levels as a mass formation. Anywhere from
165 KTS on the bottom of a pass to 100 KTS at the top.
- And plenty more "little" things that take practice.
What a joy when all goes right and the video looks great,
especially on large screen in the Pub.

Subject: RE: Yak-List: SNF Warbird Changes
Folks:
There seems to be some misunderstanding here. EAA and Sun 'n
Fun have recently reinforced our intentions to work together
to promote active participation by EAA members (and the best
possible EAA member experience!) at Sun 'n Fun's Fly-In.
This most definitely, and especially, includes Warbirds.
Speaking for Sun 'n Fun, I can say definitively that the
benefits enjoyed by Warbird participants in our event will
continue, and, in fact, I am open to any suggestions as to
how we can make Warbird participation more enjoyable and
attractive for participants.
As you know, Sun 'n Fun has provided 2 free weekly passes
(wristbands) per aircraft engine to each Warbird attending
our event. We have also, at the suggestion of the Sun 'n Fun
Warbirds Chairman, provided 10 cases of beer for the Warbird
gathering for the last two years (not a big deal, but that's
what he asked for). Other benefits include courtesy vehicles
and near-in parking passes. We will also continue to
reimburse fuel for those Warbirds participating in our
airshow. The free passes in our opinion are well worth the
benefit to Sun 'n Fun of Warbird participation in our event.
We will continue to provide these benefits, and I solicit
your suggestions for how we might enhance your enjoyment of
our event. Mr. Payne, I would be happy to meet with you and
anyone else to discuss your coordinated participation or any
issues or concerns you may have, if that should be desired.
You may reach me on my cell phone at 863-944-2815 or at the
office at 863-644-2431.
One final note: Tomorrow morning at 10 am here at Sun 'n
Fun's Hospitality Room (above the pavilion) we will be
having an all-comers aviation safety meeting. I am committed
to making the Sun 'n Fun Fly-In as safe as possible and I
welcome your attendance if possible and comments/concerns if
you can't make it.

SNF Yakkers,
The EAA Warbirds will NOT be participating as an entity at
next year's Sun N Fun. This is no shock, given the takever
of the SNF by folks who have removed EAA from their
corporate name.
What this means to us is no free wristbands or fuel
reimbursement from Warbirds of America.
However, I have planned (with Pappy's help) an event during
this period at nearby Zephyrhills (ZPH). We will have a real
WW-II Baracks (restored) for a briefing room, our own ramp,
cheap (relative) fuel, and associated logistics. I also have
rooms at two hotels, 6 at the Quality Inn for $71.10/night
and 20 rooms at the Best Western for $64/night or $54/night
if you stay from Sunday-Sunday.
I'm sure we can STILL participate in the airshow for a few
days anyway. That means mass formation practice AS WELL AS
FORMATION TRAINING. I'll work the politics of trying to get
compensation, perks, if anyone cares.
There will still be a Sun n Fun fly-in, with vendors and all
but I see this an an opportunity to get together, fly, have
fun and MAYBE negotiate on our own for a place in the show.
Thoughts and Comments?

Jay;
I have not yet had a cyl. attachment problem with the CJ's I look after.
They are all low time engines so that may be the reason. Two have been
converted to the M14P and these are both low time as well. I have had two
Huosai cylinders off for exhaust valve refacing and will shortly be pulling
one from an M14P for the same reason.
I had not seen a cylinder with a paper gasket before, all my radial
experience is with P&W engines. Was not aware that the Warner used a gasket.
I see no good reason for the gasket, the "O" ring base seal should do the
job, oil should not get to the shot peened surface. As a guarantee one could
use a coating of Hylomar which would seal the surface with no effect on the
metal to metal contact.
As you have already noted a 3/8" pal nut will work to replace the tab
washer.
Cheers;
Walt

> As always, terminology is a problem. When I said I do are-torque every 100
hours, I should have really said check-torque. These are two completely
different matters as a re-torque involves backing off the torque and then
torquing to the correct value whereasa check-torque is simply setting the
torque wrench to the desired setting and checking that the required tension
is still present.
> Walt.... as for the stud configuration... the stud is simply screwed into
the crankcase with no helicoil and no step on the stud.
> Anyone out there care to comment on whether the M-14 has this problem, as
allfour Housai's on our field have had this problem. Regular checking of the
base studs is a MUST. In fact, almost everytime we have had excessive oil on
the belly of the aircraft, it has been as a result of the cylinder loosing
it's torque, most commonly as a result of the paper gasket giving up the
ghost and blowing out.
> On paper
> gaskets.... is anyone operating without any gasket at all? Is it OK to
do this? Will areasonable seal be acheived with the shot-peened surface?
(TheWarner ScarabSB specifically calls for the removal of the gasket and for
a groove to be machined to take an O-ring similar to the Housai, but it's
crankcase mating surface is not shot-peened)

Hi Richard;
You haven't missed anything. Ten thousand "satisfied users" would make no
difference. I would not recommend anyone hold their breath waiting for a
certificated CJ6.
