Could anyone please say what if any type of carb heat is normally fitted to a CJ
or Yak?
Thanks..

Subject: | Bubble Balancing the M14 Prop |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" <yak52driver@earthlink.net>
Yaksters;
Bought a tire bubble balancing machine from Harbor Freight and modified
is slightly so that the stock YAK-52 prop would sit on the balancing
part with the CG of the prop slightly below the pivot point.
The nice thing about using the bubble balancer was the fact you could
balance in two axis. You can achieve balance in the blade direction as
well as hub side to side balance. This particular prop was off in both
directions and required allot of weight to balance so something was
obviously wrong. Turned out one of the blades needed to be turned out
one complete turn to get close to a rough balance. It was then a matter
of adding four "three hole" weights to the prop nut so as to center the
bubble. The little bit of side to side unbalance was taken care of, for
the most part, by mounting the weights to the backside (pilot side) of
the prop nut.
Running the prop showed a resonant imbalance around 50% rpm. I figured
it might be an aerodynamic imbalance. The technique had been to grab the
counterweight arms and move them to minimum pitch and then adjust the
blade angle at that point.
It was decided to adjust blade angle using the minimum pitch position as
defined by the prop piston rather than where the counterweights come to
a dead stop. The blade angle was first increased and then from there the
minimum pitch position was adjusted by pushing on the piston until it
bottomed. The attempt was to eliminate any slop in the mechanism that
moves the blades in pitch. Using this method, the blade angles were
found to be different from each other by 1.8 Degrees. Both blades
required readjustment.
Running the prop again, the resonant vibration point at 50% RPM
disappeared.
Using this technique has resulted in what appears to be an acceptable
static balance. One blade needed to be turned out one complete turn to
achieve a rough balance and that worries me. Thread engagement of the
prop is about 1 1/4 turn out from the fully seated position. Does anyone
see this as a problem? What about the technique of adjusting blade pitch
using the piston to define minimum pitch?
Thanks in advance
Frank

The carb heat parts used on the Yak 52/M14 look like a set of ram horns
which are connected to the rear opening of the carburetor intake door. The
"ram horns" then curve upward and forward toward the back side of the
cylinders and are securely mounted to the lower intake tubes on the left and
right. When the carb heat door is closed at the front, the rear is then
open and the heat from the back side of the cylinders is drawn into the
carburetor intake. Most Yak 52's do not have them installed.

Blade angles should be set with both blades being as close to equal length
and at 1 meter from the center of the hub or 8" in from the blade tip. But
first you should measure the blade lengths from the center of the prop hub;
adjust to equal lengths. Then measure 1 meter from the center of the hub
and scribe a perpendicular line on the back side of the blade. Next,
measure and set the blade angle. If both blades are of equal length, you
can measure 8" in from the blade tip and scribe the perpendicular line to
measure the blade angle of 14.5 degrees.
Minimum pitch is definitely controlled by the piston. So at max travel of
the piston, minimum blade angle is achieved. Adjusting the blade angle
using your technique should achieve a much more accurate blade angle
adjustment by taking into account the slop in the movement of the
counterweight mechanism. One question though. After you set the blade
angles using your technique, how close to the center mark on the collar
index mark are the whisker marks on the prop blades?
Let the group know the results of your balancing and blade angle setting
technique.

RE:
Air valve problems
If I might make a suggestion: After cleaning up the air valve
thoroughly, if it still is serviceable, reassemble it with a little bit of
BOAT wheel bearing grease.
This stuff is the best I have ever found for preventing corrosion of
tight-fitting metal parts. A friend of mine assembled his new spring-loaded
landing gear struts with it, and then they were submerged in a flood. It
was over a year before he could get around to dumping out all the flood
waters from them, and they were pristine.
I use the same stuff in all my wheel bearings, and since starting
using it, I have not had a bearing failure.

In the article by Fred Abramson he mentions a valve that can be added to
the oil line from the main oil reservoir to the pressure lube oil pump.
I know the hazards with installing an inline cut off valve to the oil
pump. Has anyone installed one? How hard is it to access the valve to
open and close? Is there some kind of a detent that keeps the valve from
closing during flight? Any and all information would be appreciated.
