Barry is doing diamond-stitch carpeting, Pappy is doing an EFIS; what
is this world coming to? Everyone is turning their CJ into a Mooney.

You know, flying an ILS with the chinese AI was always a challenge for
me. I had to fly on the gauges for about 30 minutes before I stopped
reversing my pitch inputs and felt ready to fly the ILS. The backwards
AI didn't help either but at least card was settable for the desired
heading.
Yeah, I bet that Blue Mountain EFIS would be a big help.

Thanks to those whom forwarded photos to me for use in the
RedStar Pilot's brochure. I made use of everything I had,
plus the RPA galleries, and Matronics Photoshare (Thanks
Matt).
The brochures are for distribution at ICAS, they are single
page tri-folds on glossy, heavy card stock. At $1 each,
copies are for airshow organizers only. Since the photos
used were in the public domain, I used what was good.
Finding good photos for reproduction was not easy, only a
few shots among the hundreds I looked at were good enough.
In a previous life I did free-lance photo and articles for
aviation mags and learned that there are numerous technical
details with the photo as well as artistic merit that need
careful attention.
Today we have digital editing on home computers so I was
able to "tune" up what I used. Still it would be neat to
have a "stock" portfollio of really good pics. I believe
that our formation skills can be put to good use with
unusual attitudes that make use of great backgrounds. Most
aviation mag photos only scratch the surface of what is
possible; mainly because the pilots do not have the skills
to hold station in a 45-60 degree bank. Good photogs will
immediately grasp the possibilities once they experience the
angles and lighting possible by good positioning.
So how come you -TW guys haven't posted any professional
pics? You spend $150K+ and do not have good air-to-air
shots? Come on guys!

I had my 52 painted at Woodlake Refinishing about 4 years ago. Russ had done several
L-39's but mine was his first Yak and he did a great job. (He had done our
Dakota previously). I'd go back.

Bladder tanks hold about 30 gallons a side. The installation is mostly monkey
work. It takes less than a week to get them installed. Be sure you add the vent
valves so that you can ballance the fuel usage between tanks.

Yes, you can just install an American made antenna in it's place. However,
if you want to keep the original installation, just get the exact
measurement of the blade length off of a known good Russian whip, pull the
antenna assembly out (remove the screws from the top) and have a new rod
threaded and put on. That antenna "rod" is actually threaded and can be
taken OUT. You'll see that once you take it apart and look inside.
There is a chrome piece that extends up from the base about 2-3 inches. The
"rod" itself threads into this piece.
Note: There is sometimes a lock pin that keeps the threaded rod from
"unthreading" from the base.

The cost was $2,800 for the tank and fuel senders. I took the wings off and
turned them bottom up to make working a little easier.
It took about 50 hours of work. You take out the old tanks, use a die
grinder to cut out the mounting brackets, cover the sharp edges, reinforce the
tank
cover, run the new vent lines, add a 47 ohm resister to the ground wire of the
fuel gage, drop in the new bladders, and than put it back together. That is
basically it.
I'll put fuel in them tomorrow for leak check and test the new electric fuel
pump. I mounted a "beer can" type pump in the same place as the old wobble
pump. I had two special fittings machined up that allowed me to use the metric
"B" nuts and yet US pipe thread into the pump.
