Does anyone have pictures showing what the doors/louvers at the front/rear
of the oil cooler on a Yak 55 look like. Mine has none and its going to be
getting cold soon in the Northeast and I am curious what was originally
mounted. Duct tape for now but I would like to also know if what was
originally in place is available anywhere.
Also, any recommendations on aerobatic wingtip sights, mounting, sources,
experiences etc.
Thanks, Scott

Gentalmen,
The link to Stein Air is _http://www.steinair.com/_
(http://www.steinair.com/) they will build up a complete Dynon D10A harness for the yak 52/CJ
installation for somewhere in the neighborhood of $50.00 if you tell them you
are a
RPA member.
The guy I spoke to asked me if I was a member because I didn't remember that
we had negotiated a discount with them at OSH. Thanks to Ski and Tim Stevens
on wheeling and dealing.

To my ICAS convention bound Yakers friends,
I am looking for an ICAS performer directory. I know it was once
published,
but am unaware if it continues to be or if one should rely on the
website.
If someone heading to KLAS could pick one and mail it over to the great
white north for me it would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dan Fortin

Just a tidbit:
The original YAKS ... at least the 50's... came with an internal thermostat
(mounted in the oil cooler) that by-passed the oil cooler itself. As time
went on, this item was removed, and in it's place an over-pressure bypass
was installed. I.E., If the cooler became clogged, it would allow the oil
to be bypassed preventing total loss of oil to the engine.
Except for the mount... this same oil cooler is still used on various
helicopters made in Russia, and ALL of them still retain the internal
thermostat.
Through an accident, I managed to obtain one of these original thermostats
and re-installed it into the oil cooler used in my YAK-50. The result
was... for me anyway... a wonderful thing. My oil comes up to minimum
operating temp. in less than 1/2 of the amount of time it used to, and in
extremely cold weather, where it used to go below minimum operating temps.,
it now does not, and instead stays directly in the middle of the green.
Before anyone comments that I am taking a risk because of the loss of the
cooler by-pass capability... yes, I am well aware of that. I watch oil
pressure like a hawk, change oil every 20 hours, help clean the engine with
MMO, and will remove and have the cooler rebuilt at the slightest hint of a
problem. The upside is that my oil temp is now COMPLETELY stable and
operates at the optimum temp. To me, this gain is worth the possible down
side, and it the capability is worth at least mentioning to those that might
not know about it.
Best Regards,
Mark Bitterlich

Scott,
I have some pics of the original 55 setup (because mine was missing
the aft half). So I fabbed up my own aft half. It came out quite
nice I think. If you contact me off the list (just a quick message to
remind me) I'll send the pics over Friday night.

Hi,
The manual is very clear on this,... that below '0' degrees carb inlet
temp. them engine may run rough, and "landing may be necessary". I think
you experienced what the manual referred to!
Cheers!, -rs-

I have experienced carb ice on my M14 powered CJ6.
On Canada's west coast at this time of year we quite often experience high humidity
with temperatures hovering around freezing,
I kept the CJ6 warming horns which seem to work well showing a good temp rise with
carb heat selection.
