Particularly nice is the ability to get a list of TAF's in plain
english along a route you can designate. Scroll to the bottom of the
TAF page..takes just seconds...You can also do a route edit on METARS
and the graphics aren't bad either."

Anyone have any experience/info on a product called CD-2 Lead Substitute?
It's an additive for unleaded fuels. They don't give much info on the label or
web site (www.cd-2products.com) which happens to be a child of the turtle wax
company, the makers of MMO. This stuff says that it'll help lubricate the
valves, etc., whereas MMO says it'll help with basically keeping things clean.
Could ya, should ya use both? Any thoughts?

I am a devout advocate of MMO and highly recommend using it in both the fuel
and oil. As for the lead substitute, I don't have any knowledge or
experience with the product.

I dunno Jon. Maybe that's why they call it Marvel MYSTERY Oil. I know my
M14 does not have near the hesitation on throttle-up when on short final
(definitely gets your attention when it hiccups and coughs on short final).
It clearly helps lubricate the valves. As our fellow yak-list contributor
Craig Payne has said on numerous occasions, take a walk down the pits at the
Reno air races and see how many gallons of MMO are lying around empty in the
pits. They sure as heck are not drinking it. I use 6 oz. per 15 gallons,
which is the recommended ratio on the container.
I've been running it in my M14 for 5.5 years now and it clearly helps reduce
the hesitation problems. The MMO (emphasis on OIL) also helps lubricate the
large rubber diaphragm in the VERY expensive Russian carburetor which I am
sure contributes to the hesitation problem due to using 100LL.

Seeking advise for Yak 52 upgrade, I have some interest in removing the
original "avionics", and repacing them with moderen and LIGHTER units. This
would include the radio, the Horz & Dir Gyros, and all of the asscociated
control boxes wireing and switches.
Does anybody have any experiance with this? How much weight could be removed
this way? How much trouble am I headed for?

Yep. EPA loves it. Should do a decent job on removing the paint (Chinese)
that's normally found on a CJ-6. Its basically dry ice in very small pellet
form shot against the surface. The sudden freezing cause the paint to become
very brittle and the abrasion of the pellet and air pressure takes off the
paint. Great around rivet heads and seams.
Another popular one is baking soda and high pressure water. Again loved by
the EPA and should be a little cheaper than the dry ice.
Both of these system are used by USAF contractors who do the repainting for
them. Both are good for heavy structural pieces, but you might want to be very
careful on thin skins. Remember that pounding on aluminum, be it hammer or
dry ice pellets, has the same effect. It will may cause the aluminum to buckle
and becomes brittle. The people who use this stuff have to be careful,
because they can damage parts very quickly. Make sure you look into their back
ground on if they have done similar type aircraft (C-172) and not just heavy
metal stuff.
