Folks,
If not already, you will shortly here some very bad news from our leading insurance
broker on our communy concerning gear-related mishaps/reportable claims.
The number of mishaps is remarkable and without going in to statistical data
we've requested to gather a clear picture of the situation, I would like to ask
for your inputs.
We are working to field three commercially distributed e-mail based newsletter
products that are in final design stage and we will use these platforms to get
info out to members on a monthly or as needed basis - two of the products focus
on specific subjects, flight operations/safety and manianaince.
If you have concrete, implementable ideas the RPA should consider for events that
would address this specific issue or general flight discipline (which can include
promoting better maintanaince practices), please forward your idea to me
directly (to the yak list as well, but I don't want to miss your idea/input).
I believe Cannon Aviations, Tom Johnson, will address the Yak List on the specific
details his underwriters have communicated to him on this issue, Thanks,

If not already, you will shortly here some very bad news from our leading insurance
broker on our community concerning gear-related mishaps/reportable claims.
The number of mishaps is remarkable and without going in to statistical data
we've requested to gather a clear picture of the situation, I would like to
ask for your inputs to help your community of pilots.
We are working to field three commercially distributed e-mail based newsletter
products that are in final design stage and we will use these platforms to get
info out to members on a monthly or as needed basis - two of the products focus
on specific subjects, flight operations/safety and maintenance. These products
can now be built online just by cutting and pasting in text and uploading
images. If you would like to author a Maintanaince bulletin or otherwise assist
in this new newsletter platform, which takes no mail stuffing or computer
knowledge, please e-mail me offline.
On the immediate issue; If you have concrete, implementable ideas the RPA should
consider for events that would address this specific issue or general flight
discipline (which can include promoting better maintenance practices), please
forward your idea to me directly (to the yak list as well, but I don't want to
miss your idea/input). I would like to know what ideas you have to promote
operational safety at events and fly-ins, from calling "gear down" over CTAF as
an event procedure before crossing the threshold, to ground training seminars
- whatever your ideas are we would like to hear them.

My verbal pre-landing checklist includes "I've got 3 barber poles and
3 greens geardown and LOCKED" making sure that the little lock lever
is slid over to prevent inadvertantly pulling it up thinking its the
flaps while taxi'ing. Also I refer to my gear indicator lights as a
secondary means of identification, my barber poles are my primary
indicators. Make sure that the stripes are clearly identifiable and I
like to have a black line at the bottom stripe to really make sure
that the poles are all the way up.
And finally when making my turns to base and final radio calls I end
with "3 Greens" e.g. N39DE turning base for 18 full stop with 3
greens, N39DE on final full stop with 3 greens down and locked.
Only adds about an additional 2 seconds of speech over the radio but
its an easy habit to get into, and makes you look down to make sure.

Ernie,
This is all good but I believe most of us do use some kind of a checklist.
The problem seems to occur primarily when routine cockpit procedure (before
landing check list) has been interrupted. This can be caused by many
reasons, from an extra talkative GIB to an confusing, rushed controller to
urgent/emergency situation or simply by the pilot mind being pre-occupied
with something - the key point: interruption in the pilot checklist routine.
Goolsby has devised a system (GGWS - Goolsby Gear Warning System) that
incorporates a micro-switch right behind the throttle. A warning light and
a buzzer were connected to the gear up (Red) lights (forward of the three
LEDs). Quite simple, really. When the throttle comes back and engages the
micro-switch -if the gear is up (three red lights energized), the circuit
closes and the warning light as well as the buzzer go off. This gizmo works
great (it will get your attention when you practice stalls or spins).
Needless to say, I've got it installed in my CJ.
Major Kudos to Pappy on this.
Would the insurance underwriter find this to be a satisfactory remedy? Tom?

Actually thats the same device thats installed on my 1958 Bonanza.
Theres a cam on the throttle actuator near the carb that rides over a
micro switch. If you go idle throttle with gear up a buzzer goes off.

As Sam Sax said, distractions interrupt our routines and we
get out of sequence. Without a Squat Switch,the CJ/Yak can
retract their gear on the ground, most disconcerning, I am
told...
Of course hardware is only part of the procedure. Since a
"friend" pulled up his gear on the ground, I have inserted
the discipline of reconfiguring Nutin' until off the runway.
Then, and only then, I first Identify the control with my
hand, and eye, challenge with a callout, and execute with a
vocal reply, as in:
"Flap handle"
"Flaps up"
In flight I now do the same thing, as if I'm talking to a FO
in the seat behind. Sometimes it may sound silly but then my
brain isn't as young as it used to be.
