There have been some great suggestions on physical mods to create some sort
of gear warning system.
Please post any links to the products that are commercialy available.

Ira and all,
I do not think that any "kits" are offered at this time, with the exception
of the fully TSO'd and very expensive systems meant for some of the general
aviation aircraft, the price of which most likely 70% or more is to cover
liability insurance issues. Since the problem of liability seems to be
standing in the way of someone (me included) making and selling a gear
warning system, maybe we should opt for the next best thing. This might
start with input from those of you that now have a GWS installed, this info
could be then put into a understandable format wherein there would be part
numbers and product sources called out. The result could be a final posting
on the list that we all could use to construct our own system. It makes no
sense to me to reinvent the wheel if Pappy or someone else has already done
it and the system is not overly difficult to install and is at this time
working properly.
I'll be happy to compile the results if any of you guys want to share what
you have done so far. Please give me part numbers and your parts source if
you know or remember.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

How about this as an easy, and simple solution. Use four relays one on the
flap light circuit, one on each of the landing gear lights. If the flap
light down is on and any of the gear lights does not have 28v light a
warning lamp and for the brain dead sound a pizo electric buzzer, damn
those things can be real loud. Alternatively feed an audio signal into the
headset. As far as gear up while on the ground put a weight on switch on
the gear to operate a high pressure solenoid on the gear circuit. That way
if you operate the gear up it will just piss air out the side, it would not
affect the down gear side at all. And if it stuck open it would just mean
that the gear would not come up on take off.

We are in the process of obtaining an aerobatics box for All Red Star
2005 (May 11-15). I'd like to hear from those of you on this list that
have dealt with securing a box at your events, and specifically how you
have handled insurance coverage for it. Thanks in advance!
Please reply directly to me at barry@flyredstar.org
Cheers,
Barry

Adding a GWS to any of our airplanes can be as simple or as sophisticated as
one wants. I designed mine and built it in one day. I used a simple micro
switch, a piece of aluminum 1/2" by 5" by .02, a 24v horn, and 24v light. The
only thing my GWS tells me; is my NOSE gear is still UP, when I reduce the
throttle below 400 whatsits.
I simply took a wire from the rear cockpit - red nose gear light - to the
micro switch. From there to the horn and than to a single red light mounted on
my glare shield, than to ground.
The aluminum strip, I notched at one end so that the notch would fit over the
push rod of the rear throttle and use the lock nut of the push rod fork, to
hold it in place. I than bent the aluminum about 110 degrees so as to form a
ramp. The micro switch was mounted preeminently to a home made bracket and
adjusted to close when the throttle reached a certain point. I happen to pick
400 whatsits. I believe that one could design a sophisticated as one would
want. Remember it don't have to be TSOed, just work. KISS. Mine was made from
parts I had around my hangar but I don't think new ones would cost over $50.
The other thing I did was make wheel shape handle for the gear. I used
bright yellow brass but you can use anything. "Tactile feel" of handles can be
quite important. I plan though have not done it yet, to make a square handle for
the flaps. (The B-24 has one and its important because the flap handle and
gear handle are right next to each other).
The most important thing I've done is change my cockpit procedures. Since I
pulled the gear up while I was sitting on the ground, I religiously make sure
that the gear hatch is across. I believe that making this hatch so as that it
automatically spring closed with handle going down, will save a lot of people
from pulling the gear up on the ground.
I hope this helps some.
BTW we are adding a ground session at our clinics on this little topic.
