--> Yak-List message posted by: "Jorgen Nielsen" <jorgen.nielsen@mweb.co.za> The problem as I see it with throttle mounted warning systems is the nature of flight with our aeroplanes - many / most / almost all? flights have an aerobatic component that would include closing the throttle such as for spin entry. The warning system would then operate and one would switch it off or be distracted by its operation (and forget to switch it on again!). Using the flaps as the switch (flaps down with no gear operates buzzer) would get around this, but if landing flapless the system would not operate. This would be my preferred option, but is not failsafe. I am not electronics buff, but is there no chance of using a modified "park distance control" unit from a car? And bumping up the range to operate as a low range ground proximity unit ?(radio altimeter) I know some cars (mercedes) also have a radar type unit for cruise control? One could also then perhaps wire it to a solenoid that blocks operation of the gear up select when on the ground, or to a microswitch so that the second the gear up lever moves out of position a buzzer goes off? > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com > [mailto:owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Gus Fraser > Sent: 04 January 2005 00:41 AM > To: yak-list@matronics.com > Subject: RE: Yak-List: Gear and props > > > --> Yak-List message posted by: Gus Fraser <fraseg@comcast.net> > > How about this as an easy, and simple solution. --> Yak-List message posted by: Mike Beresford <mike_beresford@yahoo.co.uk> Hi all I've been watching the comments about gear warning systems with interest, as this is something I'd like to fit to my own aircraft. A few comments do come to mind: 1) Throttle / flap switches: Simple idea, but not entirely foolproof. At the flying school where I learned to fly we started on Cessnas (172 or 152), and went onto an old Piper Arrow for more advanced training. There were several near "wheels up" incidents in the Arrow, despite it having a throttle-linked gear warning. The problem was that the Arrow (that version anyway) did not have a stall warning buzzer / horn. Pilots who forgot the gear inevitably heard the warning buzzer on finals, as they throttled back, but often thought it was the stall warning (as they had heard in the Cessna). Of course the response was to put on the power and lower the nose, which stopped the warning. After two or three cycles of this, they would assume that the stall warning was malfunctioning and ignore it. I know of at least two approaches where a sharp pair of eye in the tower prevented an accident! Potential solution is to integrate a synthetic voice that actually says 'gear". This might not be too expensive, given the cost of memory chips today. Incidentally the SA Airforce Harvards had a similar buzzer system for gear, not sure what they had for stall warning. 2) Bypassing the system for aerobatics: This can be done fairly simply, but again the problem is ensuring that the bypass is de-activated for circuits. On another type of aircraft that I work with we have a similar gear warning system (throttle-linked), with a bypass switch for deliberate low power situations. Our safety here is that we have a two crew cockpit, and that the position of the switch is checked by challenge - response on the pre-landing checklist. Nice ideas. Not entirely foolproof, but then nothing ever is ;-) Blue skies Mike Beresford South Africa

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Sam Sax" <cd001633@mindspring.com> I had some problem renewing on-line as well. I chose to pay via Pay Pal but the system appeared to ignore my selection (Pay Pal). I did this several times without success. It did finally work after I filled in the info in the Credit Card section (shouldn't be necessary if paying by Pay pal). An error message appeared saying something like ECHO data is missing or something. It did work though. The site is absolutely great and very professional looking. Thanks Deon et al. --> Yak-List message posted by: Drew Blahnick <lacloudchaser@yahoo.com> Troopers, Let me try not to be long winded on this, I had all new membership and renewals moved to the encrypted platform of the Online Store; you now "purchase" you annual membership or renewal like you do a ball cap or polo using a visa/MC in a fully secure ecommerce platform. Sooo easy. However, we have store-encoded minor handling/shipping charges that apply to all products and are added to your membership fees that you will see, the reality is I reduced the membership/renewal fees to offset this cost. And: I've set up for the production of membership cards for all members FAST and non FAST, that will ship as soon as I get final competitive quotes and we go to production. These have your name and member number, aircraft, etc. If your wondering why we are doing this, think negotiations for rate reductions for RPA members, national BP or FBO fuel discounts, event merchandise and fee discounts to members...Register or renew now, as the cards ship they will be sent out by an intrepid RPA veteran we all know... Out. D.B. Pointy Head. ---------------------------------

The Harvard (and T6) gear warning system is a horn powered in series through both gear switches, a throttle switch and a normally closed relay contact. The relay also contains normally open contacts and serves as an automatic re-energizing horn cut-out for low power, gear up manouvering. It is activated by a momentary contact switch that closes the NO contacts, opens the NC contacts and kills the horn. At the same time the relay coil is also energized from the gear & throttle switches which keeps the NO contacts closed until the throttle is opened. That opens the NO, closes the NC and resets the warning circuit to energize again when the throttle is closed. Simple and works fine. The manual calls for a throttle switch setting of approx. 11" MAP - I ignore that and set it about 17". Walt > >
