Drew,
The password is easy to remember. The member number I simply cant. This is
the main reason I don't check the RPA or RPAtalk sites that often. I use
the auto-login on my own computer at home, but since I spend a fair amount
of time on the road these days don't have much opportunity to do so.
Personally, I would much prefer if one could choose his/her own sign-in name
or even simply remove the requirement for a member number and leave the
password...

One additional item that should be taught and become automatic. Whenever
the gear selector is moved to the DOWN position, the slide lock is moved
into the lock position. This should become an automatic function. With the
slide lock in place, the gear can not be retracted.

Gang,
As I approach the 10year mark of my love affair with this beautiful Chinese
mistress of mine, I am now figuring out how many hours I have shared with
her. I am quite curious has to what level of on type experience we as a
group have on our airplanes. Anyone ever tallied up their on-type time?

I amassed about 750 hours in the CJ when I had mine. That was over
about 3.5 years. I did feel that I was comfortable and proficient with
it at that rate.

I would ask Pappy for advice on this one. He changed everything and it
turned out to be a bad mag. I think he even repleced the mag but the
replacement was bad also, so he chased his tail untill he tried yet
another mag and that fixed the problem. His only symptom was an out of
spec mag drop.

I can change the login logic to accept email address as member id and you
can already pick your password. I do need some feedback on this before I
change the site - send me comments to admin@flyredstar.org if I get a lot of
positive feedback on this I will change the site.
You will still have a memberID that will be printed on your membership card
for unique identification.

RE: ELT's vs PLB
We have (had, actually) the PLB on our boat. This is quite a
neat little gadget, like has been said, it combines the ELT function
with a GPS signal, plus is registered to the operator, so that whenever
it is activated, it not only sends out a GPS location for the search
vessels, it identifies who the signal is coming from. Identifies them
by name.
The only problem is this little sucker costs $1400, (slightly
less for the newest ones), and the battery, which has to be replaced
every five years, is $350.00!!! And it has to be sent to Washington
state to be replaced---no operator replacement allowed.
AND, when we just bit the bullet and sent ours in for a new
battery, (was working fine when we sent it in--that is a required
pre-sending check), when the put the new battery on it, the new battery
FRIED the unit! Kiss $1400 goodbye.
Plus the thing was that the unit was mounted on a bracket in the
aft cabin of the boat, and it is not an automatic unit. You have to get
to it, and turn it on. That could be real interesting if the

I'll second what Preston said about the ignition harness. I had similar
problems that wouldn't go away. Everything pointed to the ignition
harness. I replaced my wires with the 5mm silicone solid core wire
(about 100 feet worth if I remember right) by pulling them thru the
harness using the old wires. Saved allot of time and headache doing it
that way. Runs great now.

Recently bought a Yak-52 which had similar intermittent missing and
roughness
issues. I have similar long stories of trouble shooting, symptomology
(sp?),
and working theories. Replaced magneto caps, rotor, and sparkplugs with
little or no improvement. In the end things pointed at the ignition
harness.
Replacing the entire harness, or at least removing it to be rebuilt and
then
re-installed, is very time consuming and not cheap. Many people had
suggestions
on how to replace the ignition wire without removing the entire harness.
After
long thought, and several fearful flights, I decided to remove the
entire
harness and have it rebuilt during annual. It was a great decision!
Removing
the harness takes about 8 hours and another 8 hours to re-install.
Re-building
the harness (replacing wire, insultation, shielding, re-plating metal
components, up-grade plug connections to US plugs, etc.) is not cheap
either. The
result was a much smoother running engine, has not missed a beat since,
excellent
throttle response, quicker starting, and more power (picked up 5 to 10
kph
airspeed cruise). I recommend calling Savage Magneto in Hayward CA
(510)
782-7081 . They do great work and know their stuff. I would recommend
calling them
regardless if you are thinking about replacing the harness. Share your
problems with "Al", he may be able to give you some advice.

Folks,
The RPA currently uses a non-changing "Member ID" and password - we are making
changes to make life simple for dues paying members based on your suggestions.
We received a very good suggestion to use your email address as your member ID
and retain a password of your choosing - great suggestion, much of the web is
moving this direction and so can we. This has of course an added benefit; it
will also insure you keep your email address up to date with us which drives all
RPA-Member communication.
Again, this system will retain a password field of your choice. I need you to
email us at admin@flyredstar.org, not to the yak list, if you have any further
feedback or suggestions, positive or negative on this before we make the code
changes tomorrow. It is very important that you visit account administration
and update your email address, as incorrect data will cost additional volunteer
manhours.
Please be aware, at this time I will not have the new membership cards printed
with your password on them; I am wary of folks who use common passwords for other
non-RPA uses and do not want to aid in accidental disclosure issues that could
harm our members. If you have comments on this, please include them to us
at admin.

Good point Dennis.
I think it was Mr. Goolsby that suggested a
spring-loaded locking latch mod - now that might be
worth looking into.

Yes, that is possible, but operating the spring loaded slide lock and moving
the gear handle at the same time might be somewhat of a challenge.

We all have our own little mind games and tricks to hopefully stave off the
day when it's our turn in the barrel. Mine is to say out loud "GEAR DOWN"
as I lower the gear and then say "AND LOCKED" as I move the slide. In my
mind the slide IS the gear lock, and without it being in the closed position
the gear is unsafe and NOT locked. The slide is the lock, 3 greens are just
icing on the cake. Just another way to look at the process. It all is
dependant upon where your head is at, some guys fly HUA some do not.
We need a guy on the ramp with a digital camera, anyone caught with their
slide in the unlocked position buys a round of beers for the house that
night.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

Thats what I like about formation flying, a good lead usually makes
the call for gear down, and another for gear check. And theres at
least # two to watch out for lead.
During a 4 ship of T-6's here a while back lead was on final with no
gear, 2 yelled "LEAD GEAR!" and lead popped them down on short final.
During the debrief lead thanked 2 and then reminded the flight that if
he bellied in, a good formation would have followed suit. :)

Recently bought a Yak-52 which had similar intermittent missing and
roughness
issues. I have similar long stories of trouble shooting, symptomology
(sp?),
and working theories. Replaced magneto caps, rotor, and sparkplugs with
little or no improvement. In the end things pointed at the ignition
harness.
Replacing the entire harness, or at least removing it to be rebuilt and then
re-installed, is very time consuming and not cheap. Many people had
suggestions
on how to replace the ignition wire without removing the entire harness.
After
long thought, and several fearful flights, I decided to remove the entire
harness and have it rebuilt during annual. It was a great decision!
Removing
the harness takes about 8 hours and another 8 hours to re-install.
Re-building
the harness (replacing wire, insultation, shielding, re-plating metal
components, up-grade plug connections to US plugs, etc.) is not cheap
either. The
result was a much smoother running engine, has not missed a beat since,
excellent
throttle response, quicker starting, and more power (picked up 5 to 10 kph
airspeed cruise). I recommend calling Savage Magneto in Hayward CA (510)
782-7081 . They do great work and know their stuff. I would recommend
calling them
regardless if you are thinking about replacing the harness. Share your
problems with "Al", he may be able to give you some advice.

If you're talking about the Champion REL37B's, they do not have the
longevity of the Russian plugs, are more expensive and are not the correct
heat range for the M14. They were the only 14mm aircraft spark plugs
available from Champion. That's how they ended up in the M14. At $32.50 a
piece, it's an extremely expensive change. Unless I'm mistaken, Aeromotors
(the builder of the new M14PF in Romania) is shipping with Russian plugs
again.

I also use the REL37B plugs and am quite happy with them. While I've not
worked with the Russian stuff, I don't plan to go back. The US plugs,
however require either a plug adaptor for the ignition lead nut (available
through Carl Hays) or US nuts. I've used the adapters and converted to the
US nuts when Savage rebuilt my harness.
Remember it's only money.

Subject: | [PLEASE READ NOW] - Addressing Upgrade At Matronics TONIGHT! |
--> Yak-List message posted by: dralle@matronics.com (Matt Dralle)
Dear Listers,
Tonight, Friday 1/7/2005 at 7pm PDT, I will be working with my Internet
Service Provider to upgrade to a larger IP subnet. I will be
re-addressing all of the machines on the network including the
Matronics Web Server and Matronics Email Server at that time. Name
Service will be updated at that time as well and most things should
work again pretty quick. There may be some bounced email for a few hours
or even a day or so as the new name-to-ip-address resolutions propagate
into the depths of the Internet.
If you have problems posting a message to one of the Lists or get a
bounced message back, please wait a couple of hours and try sending it
again. Generally, access to the web site should work within 1-hour of
the update or around 8pm PDT.
Hopefully the transition will go smoothly and you'll hardly even
notice! :-)
Thanks for your patience!

Just curious what the general population is seeing out there regarding oil
temperatures. I have a stock CJ and I'm on a first run of Phillips 20w60. I'm
consistently showing 78-80 degrees C into the oil cooler and 30-32 degrees C
out of the cooler. My main question is whether a 48 degree spread is OK. I
haven't calibrated the probe in a long, long time, and with the new to me multi
weight oil I have not been able to get the temp much above those numbers.
Yes, I know the ambient temps are lower this time of year but I'm just wondering
if I'm missing something here. The other airplanes I fly don't show in&out
temps, so I guess too much information can be a bad thing :)

Hi Mark;
There are two grades of Phillips multi-grade; 20W50 and 25W60. I assume you
are referring to 25W60.
Oil IN (i.e.: oil entering the engine, not the cooler) temperature should be
50 to 65 degs.C during normal operation. Minimum temp is 30 degs.C and this
should be reached before run-up. I look for at least 40 degs. for run-up but
that is not a CJ manual requirement (It is a Pratt & Whitney spec.). At
least 30 degs. is specified in the CJ manual and you should NEVER apply full
power below that.
Maximum continuous is 75 degs with an allowance of 85 degs. for not over 15
minutes.
The maximum oil OUT (oil just leaving the engine) temperature is 125 degs.C.
I would normally expect about a 30 degs. difference between in and out
temps. If you are operating in a cold area you need to control the airflow
through the cooler by restricting the entrance area and make sure the exit
is almost, but not quite, fully closed when the control is in that position.
The temps. you describe indicate excessive cooling is taking place which
would of course increase the differential between in and out temperatures.
As noted temps. are measured at the engine, not the oil cooler. In the CJ
the oil travels a long way to and from the cooler and cooling is taking
place while it's doing that.
Monitoring of oil out temperature has never been a requirement in Western
aircraft. It is monitored during test and break-in running of new or
overhauled engines.
