So, in my flight suit I have a laser (see below) as I don't like to have
pyros in the cockpit unless I really need them.
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pspages/rescuelaser.php
Question, given the recent brouhaha about lasers if I need to use it am I
going to get rescued or arrested ?

Successful (non-glider) bailouts are extremely rare, I agree, but I still like
the option even so. Here's one from the UK not so long ago, proving that a disciplined
attitude can make all the difference:
http://www.aaib.gov.uk/sites/aaib/cms_resources/dft_avsafety_pdf_500352.pdf
To open a new 'front', what about ditching. A number of my ex-military chums say
that they would rather bail than ditch. Would a YAK 50 (my toy) or '52/CJ go
straight under? My preference would be to find out, rather than try and swim
with an acre of canopy and yards of paracord attached.
Your thoughts gentlemen?

Possibly a chair pack where the canopy is spread over the entire container
from the back of the shoulders to the seat?
http://www.strongparachutes.com/ParaCushionChair305.html or
http://www.softieparachutes.com/html_files/long.html or
In addition to a chair pack, National makes a fairly thin back pack too.

I believe that the wings usually float for a while during a controlled
ditching. This means low-wing planes give the occupants a chance to open
the door and get out whereas the occupants of high-wing planes are at a
disadvantage.

It' is interesting that a guy (Frank) that professes to being a
conservative resorts to the tactics of the left when it comes to
feeling manly about his airplane. Lumping CJ's (or Yaks) together with
T-34's only serves to show either ignorance, insecurity...or both! But
we still love ya, Frank!

Well of course you need a parachute when you're flying an
extraordinarily
high performance, high stall speed, high wing loading plane like a
C-150.
There he was with no suitable landing place from horizon to horizon
(except
the runway he was on final for) in a plane with several thousand pounds
of
highly flammable fuel. That guy must have huge balls. Would you get
in in
a plane like that with only a parachute, no hot seats? A C-150 is
even
bigger and heavier than C-141, right?
There was a time when pilots knew how to do a deadstick landing.
Actually I
guess pilots still know how, but airplane drivers don't necessarily
know
how.

I don't know how smart it is to ADMIT this .... but.....
Right after I got my Private, (1975) I moved from the venerable Cherokee-140
at our local aero club to the T-34B, which became the love of my life until
I flew a YAK-50 decades later. Anyway, flying the T-34, it wasn't long
before I was "teaching myself aerobatics" after reading Duane Cole's books
on the subject. This represents another dumb move that might illustrate yet
another "lesson in stupidity", but there is a limit to how much I can admit
to in one day (just how fast can you exit from a Split-S when you enter from
160 MPH in a T-34?).
In any case, my buddy and I were taking turns flying into this little grass
strip named: Pepsi Cola International near New Bern, N.C.(New Bern N.C. is
the home of Pepsi by the way). During our many touch and go's we'd each try
to out-do the other first from the front seat and then from the back, doing
full stops and changing seats, etc. This went on a good portion of the
afternoon and the "I've got it ... OK YOU'VE GOT IT" exchanges soon became
pretty repetitive and control exchanges ended up being minimized by each of
us giving the stick a good "shake", followed by the other giving a quick
"rog" on the ICS.
I am sure you can imagine what is getting ready to happen here.
Cutting to the chase.... my buddy in the back is flying, and as he turns
base to final he feeds in the rest of the flaps and with the gear down (Dear
Jesus, thank you) he trims up for landing as he suddenly feels the stick
"shake".... well, that happened to be me bumping it with my knee as I was
looking around on the deck for a pencil I had just dropped. He said: "rog"
and I blew that off... thinking to myself: "what are you saying Rog for?"
Too bad I just THOUGHT that and did not SAY that.
So,.... the plane just flew down towards the runway... and here's where it
gets good. It lands... pretty much on center-line and no, I am not kidding.
The airplane landed with a pretty firm, but acceptable touch-down, and as it
is rolling down the runway, it starts slowly veering off to the left. No
brakes, no engine RPM change... just slowly rolling off towards some hangers
and a ditch.
Finally I say to my buddy: "Hey Ed, where the heck are you going?"
Ed replies: "What do you mean where am *I* going... where are YOU going?"
It's amazing how minds can suddenly come to exactly the same conclusion at
exactly the same time. BOTH of us grabbed the stick, BOTH of us slammed
full power in, BOTH of us retracted some flaps.. and there was no "fight"
over the controls per se, because now BOTH of us were in PERFECT harmony
doing exactly the same thing to keep us from running right into some trees
or the ditch.
Not one word was exchanged until we landed at the "big" airport at New Bern.
After the first beer was slammed, and we started on the second, then... and
only then was when we realized that the darn T-34 had actually landed
itself, with no one... NO ONE..... touching not one thing from final all the
way to touchdown and beyond.
Some of us go through life having to always learn the HARD way. I'm afraid
that phrase has applied to me more time than I would ever like to admit.

Gang,
The 2005 flying season is shortly upon us and I wanted to get the word
out about All Red Star IV, May 11-15, 2005. We are currently in the
process of re-working the web site and I'll let y'all know when it goes
live. In our never ending effort to make the event better ever year,
here are the changes for 2005 in response to past participants input.
NEW:
-Tactical Formation Training: For those FAST qualified pilots looking
to add to their bag of tricks, TacForm takes your formation skills AND
fun to the next level.
- Friday evening "Red Stars Over Castle" private air show. Last year
we had a little fun with Eddie Andreini, Bill Shepard, and a 12-ship
mass formation putting on a little show at dusk. This year we have
approval from the county to pursue a waivered air show box that will
allow full aerobatic routines and high speed fly-bys by Sal Rubino in
his MiG 21's, Eddie, Bill, and others (F-5?) with low level waivers to
strut their stuff just for us! This will include the annual Tri-tip
roast dinner, AND a beer garden on the ramp with live music.
-Exhibition Air Race. This event will demonstrate a new "twist" to
formation airshow flying.
-Better Food! Many of you have requested better grub, and we agree.
We were disappointed with our caterer last year and have not only
brought on more staff to make everything run smoother, we are going to
use different vendors this year to make sure that the culinary
experience matches the flying!
- Community Forum. In the past we have had seminars on bailouts,
safety gear, airframe and power plant maintenance, etc. Those will be
back this year, and we'll also be having a round table discussion on
important safety issues that have arisen over the last twelve months.
-3rd Annual Formation Challenge. Open to both jet and prop teams, the
Bay Bombers will be back to defend their title, but this year there's
more on the line. Beautiful cotton A-2 jackets, embroidered on the
front and silk screened on the back, will go to the winning team, along
with that huge friggin' prop trophy from American Propeller. Rumor
has it there is a Yak-50 team already planning their routine....
-All Red Star IV event DVD for every participant. Last year we brought
in a dedicated film crew to shoot the event and produce a DVD...and
made it available for a nominal fee on request. Because the demand was
high we are going to include the DVD with your registration. This year

Subject: | Momentary Push to talk switch |
--> Yak-List message posted by: Edwin Curry <EACurry@ev1.net>
I have recently purchased a used control stick with the improved
parking brake lock and am about to install in the front cockpit
of my Yak 52. Does anybody know where I can get a momentary push to
talk switch that has 3 positions? Center being off. Forward and
aft being closed in two separate circuits. A switch similar to
what is used for a trim switch would be good if it could fit in the
top of the control stick. I would love to install this switch in the
top of the control stick and relocate both intercom and transmit
switches from throttle handle to control stick. Any ideas would
be appreciated.
