Craig Payne Due to popular demand, I'm posting room reservation info for our April Sun-n-Fun get together. We are staging out of Zephyrhills (ZPH), just NNW from LAL, located on Highway 301 and SR54 which crosses over from I-75. Easy to fly to, Easy to drive to. Finding the road to the airport is a little trickier. (1) Quality Inn, (813)762-2000, block period from Sunday 4/10, with Sunday 4/17 checkout. $63.99/night if more than 10 rooms reserved, otherwise $71.99 for King or Doubles. Mention "RedStar Pilots". Cancel 5 days prior to avoid 1st night charge. Cut off date for this rate is March 20th. I have 20 rooms on hold here and can get more if we need them. (2) Best Western, (813) 782-5527, about 1 mile closer to airport than the Quality, same block period but $71.10 night. Mention "RedStar Pilots". Rooms not reserved will be released April 1st. Not sure how many rooms I can actually hold, this place is a lot smaller. Make your own Credit Card reservation for these rooms at the RPA rate. I'll post rental car details later. Note that many other SNF attendees have been doing this very thing and at least 3 car rental companies will be at the field. Astounding; to some I'm sure. The only problem I encountered was a rain shower that blasted some of the paint that was just applied 24 hours prior. I could feel some imbalance just from that little bit of paint removal. The next step to to touch up and apply leading edge tape and rebalance. (and this is from one who has raced at Reno) One of the things that Reno has taught is that if you are actually multi-plane racing, you DO NOT incorporate ANY vertical manuvering in the race. That is EXTREMELY dangerous. You have one guy in a pack that, at the end of the race, out of excess exuberance, pulls up suddenly, and ----you don't want to see the results. I have a video of a flight of Mosquitos that were coming back into their home field in Australia after WW-II had ended. This was a homecoming show for returning war heros, and the three planeload of heros were making a low formation pass over the crowd. The leader pulled up suddenly, just showing off. The two wingmen took his tail off, and he took off their wingtips. And what are you seeing in average fuel > burn? > > Lee, et. al., Fuel burn varies greatly depending on profile. On cross-country you can plan about 150-160 gph block to block. For low level flying, form, acro, etc., you're looking at 180+ gph. These are real world numbers, not out of a book. Hourly operating costs are a different story. Based on 50 hrs. flying per year, you are looking at about $1500/hr. when you factor in reserves, inspections (50, 100, annual), insurance (liability only), storage, etc. Your costs would be significantly lower if you did all the work. THAT BEING SAID, the best way to get into an L-39 is a fractional ownership program (seg-way to shameless self promotion! :) ). We are launching our "Shared Squadron" program in about 30 days. Our new web site will be up soon with a cost analysis between individual ownership and squadron membership, but the basic numbers are: cost of entry reduced by over 65% (less than $100K), DOC $400/hr. v. $1500/hr. dry, hassle factor a-lot v. nil., etc. You just show up to a clean fueled, and inspected jet, ready to go...just like Joe Fighter Pilot! No, this is not a program for everyone. But for those interested in owning and flying L-39's, this is *by far* the superior way to fly. Can you have a Squadron in your area? You bet, if you live in or near a metro area, all you need is 3 like minded pilots and an FBO that services jets, and we'll do the rest! No emergency landing is anything to look forward to. However, coming from Hawaii and being still linked into the avaiation scene there, the general experience with water landings has been pretty good, even in fixed gear high-wing airplanes. Options in Hawaii are not always good. In some areas one's choices will be lava fields or water -- no question for me that I'd take water. ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 08:50:27 AM PST US From: Ernest Martinez Subject: Re: Yak-List: costs --> Yak-List message posted by: Ernest Martinez I have an L-29 which burns a little more thean the 39 but close enough for your question. Plan 150 gal an hour just in fuel burn. $5000 per year for liability insurance only. Add about $1000 year in maint (this is for a 29, 39 will be much higer $4500 for an annual inspection only, repairs will be additional). So if you fly 100 hours a year then $412 per hour in fuel @ $2.75 per gal. $50 per hour for insurance $10 to $50 per hour for maint. then add hangar and you'll come out at around $500 per hour. Fuel costs will obviously impact this number tremendously. You could then wire it to the battery, and then just plug it in to an extension cord when you are in the hangar. I know it's not the same as a external power plug, but hey... it will work... and maintain your battery all year long. I used to use one on my old Cessna and it worked great, YMMV. I have used these several times, on boats, cars, etc. Thought about putting one on the Yak several times, looks like an overgrown headphone plug, rated to 10 or 15 amps. Installs into a round cut-out hole much like an car cigarette lighter. I think they are sold for plugging in spotlights. Wire the female into the aerie and a male onto the charger and you're set to go. They have positive plug in and will not fall or vibrate out. I need to get a new pair for my tractor, to leave on trickle charger and double up as power source for spotlight. The power distribution box has a relay interlock so that only the battery or the APU can supply power both can NOT be used at the same time. i.e. if APU power is present the battery contractor can NOT close.
