There already is one near there, maybe you haven't received Craig Paynes
emails. It's called Sun 'n Fun.

I'll second on Jay's comments. I talked to Shane about hosting a
little flyin here at Leeward in Ocala Fl. sometime in the spring. I'd
like to get a show of hands to see how many folks would be interested.

We just hooked the battery up to the APU port and can charge the
battery from there....works great!

Gang,
I was remiss in omitting one of ARS's biggest supporters, airshow
performer, and friend. Greg Medford, who flies a beautiful routine in
his
CJ-6A will also be at ARS to instruct formation, fly his show routine,
and demonstrate the finer points of Crud (including how to keep from
spilling the refs beer!). He has a pretty cool web site, too:
http://www.warbirdairshows.com/
I apologize for this oversight and hope that this brown nosing effort
is sufficient to put us back in Greg's good graces...
Your humble servant,

Folks
Shane has posted online registration for sun n fun on www.flyredstar.org / EVENTS.
No prepayment is required or even asked - there is no risk to preregister.
Non RPA members pre-register as well - just click "events" on the flyredstar home
page, pre-registration is open to all non RPA attendees - it takes seconds.
Members can register even quicker - your inormation is 90% pre-filled in by the
datase server.
The event organizer gets your information electronically in the format he/she needs, letting him prepare effectively with everything from photocopying to van support to BBQ supplies. If you appreciate their hard work to bring you these events, pay them back by pre-registering on www.flyredstar.org today. It cost nothing...

Craig:
Thanks for the clarification of what you were talking about, a
scripted airshow act, vs actual racing. What you are talking about
works just fine.
In actual racing, we had to deal with a totally different
mindset--the really hyped-up pilot straining to race, then at the end,
his exuberance wanting to show off a little. In our case, the
unanticipated pullup out of a group could be just plain deadly.
That's not what you are doing.

--> Yak-List message posted by: Drew Blahnick <lacloudchaser@yahoo.com>
Folks,
Got an email from one that he registered for SunnFun and it showed up as registering
for aother event; please note the system requires you on the form to select
the event from a drop down box. If you don't select the right event, you could
register for the wrong one.
In response to this email, I'm asking Deon if he can program the event selection
on the form to be simpler for the user, say using event name as opposed to RPA
Event ID number as now used. Well see what he can do for you...
Hey Floridians and SE regionals, since I'm living here in Miami do we need an annual
Winter (dry season) south florida event between Waycross in January and
SunnFun in April? I will set one up at Tamiami Airport with the help of the RPAers
stationed there where we have ample ramp and airspace to include FAST, TAC,
Fighting Wing/BFM and Mass form practice. If you would like to see this annual
event in the winter between our Jan and April SE events already in progress,
and/or have a suggestion on Feb or March, please let me know at lacloudchaser@yahoo.com
I'm suggesting Tamiami because of its ample ramp space, airspace
(south), proximity to visitors getting out in Miami beach (wives can come down
and vacation on the beach as well, or hit the keys while boys fly fast) and
I live in the area of course.

Well I had just suggested one here at Leeward. We have an excellent
meeting room good for about 150 people, 6250 ft of runway, 2 miles of
ramp space, empty airspace far from any class B or C areas and very
cheap fuel (currently $2.10 for Jet-A and less than $2.00 for 100LL)
on an ex AF base similar to Waycross only minutes away by air.
Central Florida is also a little closer to the non Florida SE region members.
Also we have a nice downtown area with tons of restaurants and
nightlife for those so inclined and a nice Hilton hotel with
reasonable prices.

Just got my EAA Sport Aviation mag today. Interesting
article on China aviation but I somewhat puzzled (more than
usual) about Budd Davisson's article on affordable warbirds.
You guessed, NO mention of Yaks or CJ's. I wonder how Budd
manages NOT to stubble over one at SNF or Oshkosh? Or are we
mistaken for T-34 "seconds" sold to poor countries???
Perhaps some hate mail to SA Magazine??

They do have a "semi-lame" disclaimer at the end of
the article stating that they could not cover all
possible models. I agree with that however missing
the Yaks and CJ as a great deal (if not the best) is
borderline unforgivable. I am sure the article was
written before the latest T-34 incident, however even
before the incident, no rational person should be
chosing one (or some of the others mentioned) over a
Yak or CJ anyway - my opinion.
Cheers,
Zeman

Hi Drew,
A winter flying event out of Tamiami is a Great idea! I am pretty sure I
can arrange to stage out of the Wings Over Miami Museum - with a private
ramp, special fuel pricing (Museum rate), tons of food near by, media
exposure, best weather anywhere, warbird experienced tower folks etc. etc.
There are quite a few of us CJ/Yak guys (and the rest of the museum
staff/members), and of course Drew - so I KNOW we would have a Great event.
Those of you who participated in the past in our museum sponsored events
know what I am talking about. Did I mention that Miami is pretty much the
warmest part of the U.S of A that time of year???
I propose late February.
What say you all?

I own a YAK-50, but I would imagine that starting issues are the same with
the CJ.
If I may be so bold, my first recommendation would be to avoid even TRYING
to start one of these radials when the temp. is extremely cold and the
engine and oil itself are cold soaked. I did this ONE TIME. It took a
really SCARY long amount of time before I ever saw ANY oil pressure on the
gage. In retrospect, I was an idiot for waiting to see oil pressure come up
for as long as I did! Outside air at that time was about 15 degrees and I
was using Phillips 25-60W oil.
The very next purchase I made was for EZ-Heat pads (two) that I placed on
the oil reservoir itself. I pull the engine through after pre-heating the
oil about 20 times, while also putting in about 10-15 "strokes" of
primer.... not all at once, but about 5 strokes at a time. This seems to
loosen the engine up quite a bit. My friend flying a Suke has an EZ-Heat
pad on the front engine sump itself too... but I decided this was not worth
the effort.
Anyway, I then get into the aircraft and if it is REALLY cold...
sub-freezing..... shoot in another few primes. Keeping the engine throttle
WAY back, just cracked... I start it and have the primer already OUT and
ready to shove in for more prime. The real trick to starting the thing cold
is to master the priming pump.
After it starts, you might easily be required to shoot in a few more primes
just to keep it running. I would suggest NOT pumping the throttle... yes,
that does put in more fuel, but it also is asking for a backfire in my
opinion.
After the engine is RUNNING... leaving the primer in the prime position lets
the engine run richer than normal for another 30 seconds or so... this is a
matter of personal preference. Keep RPM'S LOW until engine oil temp comes
up.
Other hints: Some recommend blocking the oil cooler inlet completely and
have a friend remove it before flight.... this works. I've gone another
way, but this does indeed work well on Suke's.
A lot of people recommend NOT using the oil dilution system. I concur. You
have to use it in advance anyway... and it is hard to predict what the exact
temp. is going to be the next time you go fly... and thinning the oil with
gas is just not my bag.
I put my money on pre-heating the oil COMPLETELY with EZ-Heat pads. I
REALLY wish I had a good way to pre-heat the whole engine. I've been
eye-balling those new propane portable heater/blower things. Cheap, clean
heat... just not sure yet how to blow the heat into the engine properly.
Luckily, I live in North Carolina, so I can avoid extreme cold weather
flying to begin with, plus my poor 50 has NO COCKPIT HEAT! A fact that
makes extreme cold weather ops kind of a dead issue anyway. :-)
I'll be interested to hear what others recommend.

Lot of good points there. Year ago we had a dog that couldn't be trusted
inside our home. I fixed up an ordinary cardboard box with a 100w light bulb and
put the dog's favorite blanket inside. Even on the coldest days, the dog was
quite comfortable in there. I never measured the difference between outside
and inside temps, but it was noticeable to the touch.
Has anyone ever thought about using a heat lamp? One of these could be stuck
up under the cowl at the bottom exit. It would heat the metal via conduction
and radiation. If an ordinary blanket were draped over the cowling, this
would insulate the cowl from the outside air and retain the heat somewhat. This
wouldn't be fast, but might be set up the night before a planned flight.
Years ago when we lived in CT. at the local airport (DXR) I noted that one guy
regularly used a hair dryer, to remove snow and ice from his wings. He did this
by sticking the dryer in the inspection holes. This heated the air inside
the wing. Aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat, the heated air heated the
alumium, and the ice and snow would slide right off.
Burrrrrrrr God! I'm glad to live in Florida.

I enjoyed Bud Davisson article "At Your Service" on the affordability of some
warbirds. The "Big Iron" gets a lot of attention at airshows, but they also
got a lot of attention during WW2 because reporters back than were looking for
things exciting and clamorous and the P-51 and such, fit the bill. John Q.
Plubic seldom heard about anything else.
But I got to pick on Bud's article a little. He included the Tiger Moth and
Chipmunk so I know he wasn't just writing about US warbirds. But he forgot to
mention the Chinese CJ-6A or the Russian Yaks. These airplanes, legitiment
warbirds, are more numerous now than T-34s and 1/5 the cost. Parts are easy to
get and cheaper. Things like tires, canopy glass, and exhaust stacks are
made here in the US and are very affordible. Plus with the Redstar Pilots
Association, an owner can get lots help on maintenance, insurance, and safety
issues, to say nothing of the comradeship at our formation clinics and airshow
participation. They are great flying airplanes to boot.
