Please forgive me for jumping into this discussion mid-stream, but I see the "Slick 50" type additive topic raising it's head and I feel compelled to comment. If someone is questioning the use of a particulate oil additive such as Teflon or other similar material, they are very wise. Based on 17 years of machinery engineering experience in the petrochem manufacturing industry, never, *never* put any particulate additive such as PTFE, PFA... (Teflon) into a piece of oil lubricated machinery. And as for liquid oil additives, they *can* sometimes be beneficial. I have no significant experience with MMO, but additives such as STP, PAO synthetics, etc. can be very helpful in the right application and with compatible fluids. 2 cents Bryan Jones RV-8... --> Yak-List message posted by: "Mark Jefferies" <mark.j@yakuk.com> Why all this black magic in USA about an oil additive? (MMO) There has been no marketing cult built up in the UK about this stuff. There was something called "red X" once upon a time that got a small following from the boy racers. If MMO is so clever why is it not used world over? Could be worth millions. Lycoming "approve" an oil additive or is MMO the same stuff? The purpose is corrosion protection. For flat 4 and 6's there is always EXXON Elite multigrade, that carries real benefits for those engines in corrosion protection and wear protection. Just ask the oil analysis people for an independent view on that one. Pity we cant use it in the radials.

--> Yak-List message posted by: "cpayne@joimail.com" <cpayne@joimail.com> Some of our yaksters have really fine glass cockpit displays that wow the troops at every stop. Surely something to be proud of, but...how much of that stuff do you really use? For guys with priorities other than new high-end glass for Baby (mortages, etc) I have stumbled upon a line of instruments, long on features but short in price. For Ultralights no less. MGL Avionics has a whole line of neat stuff for the techie pilot. I'm interested in their digital encoding altimeter/VSI, the configurable AH/Compass/Turn coordinator and a fuel flow meter. See www.sportflyingshop.com for downloadable .pdf files. Anybody using this stuff? Craig Payne

    Subject: MMO and oil changes
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Steven A Johnson" <sajdds@comcast.net> Hi Mark Thanks for taking the time to respond to my statements and questions in such detail. You obviously have considerable knowledge on the subject. I am a relatively new owner (1 year) and trying to learn how to best take care of my toy. I have no mechanical background. Regarding the lead issue I have examined my plugs, one from each cylinder, at 30, 60, 100, and 130 hours since overhaul. I have never observed any significant deposits on any plugs and have never cleaned them. Compression readings at 100 hours where very high on all cylinders. Would you still recommend the use of MMO in the fuel in this circumstance? Regarding the oil changes: I understand that the oil becomes contaminated and also that with heat and use the oil itself will break down and loss it's lubricating abilities. Would you address my point that considering the consistent use and replacement of 1 quart per hour I seam to be continuously "changing" my oil. Am I not losing the old, worn-out, dirty oil at a rate of 1 quart per hour? It seams to me that after approximately 10 to 12 hours my oil will remain of constant condition until I change it at an arbitrary point of time. If it is OK from the 12 to 25 or 30 hour point why is it not good indefinitely? Would you also comment on the practice of having oil analyzed? Is it a good idea? Why and where is the best place to have it done? Please note I am not trying to convince anyone of my point of view. I am just questioning to gain a better understanding. Thanks for your comments. Steve N9900X Yak 52

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Lance Robb" <lrob4783@bigpond.net.au> We have fitted 3 small drain valves to the bottom 3 intakes and leave them open with a small tin with a wire loop on it to catch what drains from them. We have found since using them we have not had one lock and was definitely worth the time to fit them. I'm not sure where they came from but shouldn't be a problem to get hold of.
