GREAT TIME! 25 or so aircraft including 7 Yak-50's, a TW, 3 T-28's (see, the Blue guys are starting to realize where the action is!) and even a beautiful Spitfire came down to check things out. The -50's in a 7 ship vic (US history) was one of the many highlights.... 3 days of standard FAST, tactical formation, BFM/ACM, canyon runs, and even an opposed road recce (a section weaving up a road looking for targets of opportunity whilst trying to keep the bogey "out there somewhere" from becoming a bandit). Thanks to Cannon Aviation Insurance for sponsoring the event and some delicious smoked pork! TJ, Furball, Kato, Weasel, Stormy, Yoda, and the rest of the DVT crew deserve warm accolades for putting together what is sure to become a winter time habit in the Southwest! Up next, the "Dust off in the Desert II" Advanced Tactical clinic in Palm Springs March 3-6. If you are interested please contact me ASAP... Actually multi-viscosity oil does wear out. Little strands that are straight when they are cold and curl up when they are hot are what gives the oil two viscosities. Over time they break and don't increase the viscosity at high temperatures. I did say "oil", not this synthetic garbage that is still not proven, as far as I am concerned. :>) And as far as the multi-viscosity stuff is concerned, how many of us actually operate our engines at temps where this stuff in reality has any real use? Frankly, (unless you operate at Denver in winter as I do), very seldom do any of us go flying in temperatures cold enough to make starting with "thick oil" a problem, and that is the ONLY legitimate reason for having multi-viscosity oils. Cold starts. Personally, and I KNOW the "modern thinkers" are going to take my head off for this, when I go flying when it is cold, I preheat my engine up to the point where it is in a "normal" state before starting, (engine temp at 40-50 degrees F) INCLUDING ITS OIL, and therefore I have no need for a magic oil. And I know of at least three instances where an engine or oil manufacturer has had to buy MANY engines because their "magic oil" failed. I'll keep using Aeroshell 100W in all my birds, until I see the 50 years of experience (I already have) of good results with something PROVEN better. Oil is one thing I don't experiment with. It is too important. I'll let all you "modern thinkers" do the experimenting. I have made all the off-airport landings I want to. (Three, one at dark-dusk, into a mountain meadow, thru power lines.)
