The Northeast Redstar Pilots are planning the Second Annual Formation
Training weekend at Flying W airport (N14) in Southern New Jersey on March
18-19-20. All are invited and instructor qualified pilots participation would
be
greatly appreciated.
The success of last year will be tough to exceed this year but we hope to
expand our training effort and prepare for the mass Formation flights at Sun and
Fun.
The airport features a hotel, restaurant and bar on site and really helped
host a great Clinic last year. many of the Northeast pilots received an
invitation directly, but if you are planning to attend or need more info please
email me @ _tastevens1@aol.com_ (mailto:tastevens1@aol.com) and I will get you
the particulars.
Or call,

Sporty's sells it by the Gallon. seems spendy but you can do a Yak for a couple
of years with a Gallon. There's no WAX in it. Cleaning and polishing compound
only. Nothing to strip off the next time you use it. But it does look like
you've waxed your A/C when done.

We got Craig Payne's Lead flight check out of the way today. He now are one!
Doing the honors as check pilot was Bob Mahanor of the T-34 Association.
(They're not doing much flying lately) :)
I flew the #2 slot, Bill Mills #3, and Erie Martinez at #4. We rendezvous
at OCF, sortie over to Leeward, sortie back to OCF where Payne bought us
lunch. We than headed home to FD44. Did some loops with Bill on my wing.
We had a lot of laughs at Mahanor's temporary grounding (he has a T-34 but I
think I mentioned that). This went on until he pointed out that Craig had
not passed his check ride at that point. AT THAT POINT, we shut up. We
tested my machine gun on the OCF ramp. Works great!
Typical Florida winter day, CAVU and 72. Great day with great friends.

Pappy, as a matter of lead technique so that #2 has enough reserve airspeed
to be safe, how do you lead the loop? What entry airspeed, power setting and
G-load do you hold as lead?
Thanks, Blitz

Yes indeed, Florida in the winter is tough! My thanks to
Check pilot Bob Mahanor who managed to suffer through our
insults and still do the check-ride (lunch helped). "Pappy"
Goolsby, Bill Mills, and "Ernie the M" of Yak-list fame
rounded out the stick guys, others joined in for the fun
later.
Bob has *promised* to stomp me in a race with his big engine
T-34 if the feds ever let him fly it again. Any odds?
BTW, we are talking about a mini-clinic at Leeward before
SNF for newbies in the area. All ashore that's going
ashore...

Blitz, & all,
The way I do it (may not be right) is push the power up from my normal
cruise of 28" to 30" to 31". and 2300 rpm. At 180 mph (slight dive) I start
pulling 2.5 to 3 Gs. I keep a constant rate of pitch change all the way around.
I don't release the back pressure to 'float' across the top, so my loop is
not really very round and I tend to lose a little altitude at the bottom.
We probably could inter with a little more speed, but I found the biggest
problem is getting to slow at the top. The secret is getting the G's on early
before the speed bleeds off to much the first part of the loop. To slow a
pull and you run out of poop near the top and both you and your wingman 'flop'
over the top.
At least that's how we did it today. "Pumper" could elucidate it better.

I'd like to second my heart felt gongrats to Craig...."jolly good job
well done". Craig served as an excellent lead(as usual) and it was fun
to fly 4 off of seasoned FAST pilots for an hour.
I'd like to re-iterate the call for a mini formation clinic here at
Leeward Air Ranch. We have 3 CJ's on the field ready to go, and I will
be in touch with our SE co-ordinator in short order to make this
official.
I am proposing the 2'nd week of March since this is the date which
falls in with our locals here which need either FNG training or WING
recomendation rides.
Will all intersested parties please respond ASAP so I can arrange accomodations.
SHANE CALL ME!!!
Ernie
